I leu of this information I'd sugest sticking to rule of cool, as always.
Buy what you like the look of. Model what options look best to you.
Now, from a gamey perspective the troops arent that great. They are just like other peopels troops. Low impact but strategicaly important for objectives.
In terms of
DA exarch loadouts its really down to personal preference. As things stand, you currently wouldin't pick craftworld traits to buff your meager troops. I personaly like twin catapult exarchs in 5 man
MSU. With the shredding fire exarch power and expert crafters they kick out 4 -3 1D shots each which plinks off wounds when needed and can force saves/
cp rerolls. But ultimately its almost irrelvant and you will have to decide what style you like the most.
How do you personaly feel about
WYSIWYG? If your play group is cool, im sure nobody will care if you "counts as" all of your exarchs having twin catapults if one of them is armed with glaive technicaly. Likewise if new rules come about where the shimmer shield is really good im sure people wonnt begrudge you some minor deviation from
WYSIWYG. Minor weapon swaps usualy dont bother anyone as most likely they dont have a clue which weapon is supposed to look like what on your army anyway....
You have your main bases covered -
HQs troops and wave serpents. So what you add from now is entirely up to you.
The only thing I would say avoid buying is any of the failcast aspects or rangers unless you can get good deal on
OOP metals on ebay. Purely from a hobby perspective. The detailing really sucks on finacast small ldar bits. Some of the storm guardian arms I got from
GW look like they have tumours for shoulders and arms..
I would probably recommend picking up a warlock to hang with farseers and unlock Seer council strategem. Its very good. And also can get cheap metal warlocks on ebay easily. Other then that
id perhaps look at getting maybe another wave serpents or falcons.
Current rules really reward ability to hold objectives. Wraithblades with axe and shield can be really good to hold the line and objectives and also have good £ to pts ratio. Shining spears are probably better but as mentioned, expensive finecast.
But ultimately get what you want and get some games to see what your army needs..
Thanks for the reply Argive,
Mostly looking to play relaxed games at the moment.
WYSIWYG is not an issue but I have the means to magnetize the arms and have the extras to do it. It seemed to me that for a unit of 5
DAs the Shimmershield was a bit much in points.
Was thinking about running the
DAs in 5s, and getting another Waveserpent with some Banshees to run as a strike unit. Also considering some Reapers for Fire Support (are those plastic or
FC?).
Do like the wraith units in general. So thanks for the idea there.
Any thoughts on the big gun for the Guardians? Do you run it cheap or try to use a more pricey fixture? Same question for the Viper.
Thanks for any other thoughts!

If wysywig isn't an issue I personally wouldn't bother magnetising small infantry because its just not worth it. The shimmer shield on
DA does seem like bit of a waste of points currently. I like to either give shredding to my exarch or keep him with OG battle fortune for a 4++. It has won me games on occasion where the exarch is the last guy alive and he just tanks shot after shot on his 4++. Its pretty cool when it happens. Hero exarch! (Certainly not to be relied on though haha)
The guardian platform is really there for ablative wounds and saves more then any fire power. The real offensive of guardians is the shuriken catapult output with doom. (and guide). I really rate the humble guardian blob. I think a unit of 20 guardians in deep strike can really do some work. Defensively you can cast them with protect and celestial shield for a 3++ as well as 2+ on the platform making them incredibly resilient for their points theoretically. Shuriken canons are usually best because they are assault so if your guardians need to advance they can still shoot those. I really dig storm guardians personally but its a controversial choice for a lot of people
Magnetise away if you want of course. I have personally fully magnetized my wraithguard/blades including the wrists which was a big mistake
IMO. Small joints are just a pain and effects can vary. I certainly think it was a waste of time with my wraiths. Should have just bought wraiths which I did anyway
lol.
Heavy weapons on tanks thought are a different matter fairly easy to mag.
On the subject of, heavy weapons, I would suggest Star cannons or maybe AML. From game play you will probably be running Expert crafters (reroll a hit roll an a wound roll per unit) and keep things
MSU. SO star cannons really lend themselves to that playstyle. It depends entirely on how much armour the enemy is bringing. You cant always tailor nor should you unless you are really struggling
IMO.
I have magnetised my wave serpent/wraithlords/seers with all heavy weapon options. I like to keep things wysywig where I can and rules will always change because
GW be
GW. All that said you can in theory build your army in a way that really works well with shuriken or even scatter bike blobs. You just have to synergise. However expert crafters trait is king currently and its hard to argue against taking it as the optimal choice.
For example, If you invest in a lot of bright lances, and all you face is hordes of infantry those bright lances will feel a bit underwhelming. BUT if you end up facing some vehicles they should do real work (-4
ap is awesome but
d6 damage is kinda swingy so
YMMV). That's why I personally like the AML as heavy weapon. Because you can fire anti infantry spread (
str 4
d6 -1
ap 1D) or you can focus krak missle (
str 8 -2
D6 damage) Both options are swingy but you have duality. Star canons are the middle of the of the road and many people will take all the star cannons they can. Good
ROF and
AP and decent damage meaning you can take out big targets as well as elite infantry/ light vehicles. So ultimately it depends on personal preference and the type of enemy you are likely to face. Shuriken weaponry has kind of fallen by the wayside by and large because lack of innate
AP and mediocre
str. Its still has a place but other options just seem better
IMO.
Dark reapers are an excellent choice also. I personally really like
MSU 3x3 units with expert crafters and a couple tempest launchers. BUT bigger untis work fine also thanks to guide power as well as being able to reembark on transports using fire and fade which you just cant do with
MSU so
YMMV. They are sadly finecast. All the aspects apart from Banshees and dire avengers are finecast. :(
I have come to respect banshees a bit more. They have a place
IMO. Ideally use them to shut down enemy fire power from big scary units and /or rush at an objective held by small ob sec infnatry and hope to kill them outright or at least tarp them. They are not too expensive pts wise for what they can do
IMO.
Caveat to everything I have said - The
UK is still lockdown protocols so I have not really had the opportunity to play at all in 9th. However i have played a lot of games in 8th ed and have been watching a lot of battle reports to keep up to date.
I highly recommend you check out the
CWE specific tactics thread. Its a great resource for lists as well as peoples experiences running different army compositions.
