This is a question that's been rolling around in my head for some time over the last few days. I was intending to ask this as well, along with the question of any "rules" that some of you remembered fondly.
I am asking about games in general. This doesn't have to be a tournament game, or something from some escalation play. It could be a simple match that you and your friend played in their garage on your day off. Victory, or defeat it does not matter. So long as you can clearly recall just what it was that made that specific match a make, or break moment for you.
As before I'll start off with something that comes to mind:
I was merely getting back into 40k, it had been a few years since I'd last tossed dice for any particular army. Save for a few instance that I would go to my local GW store (When there still was one near me) and help break new players into the hobby. Though that should be it's own story, because I was eventually banned from that store for being a bit too direct with new players, but I digress.
Sixth edition had just rolled around and I was working to dust off some of my older models. I still had slightly over 3k points in GK, alone and maybe another 2500 in IG. So I would spend some time rotating between two shops on a near bi-weekly basis. Simply for the fact that the shops in question had rotating schedules. One of the same players from these same shops, D being the name that I'll give him here, was a prominent fixture in most of the same activities. Those of you who've seen my post before might recall this man as I've already spoken about him. He was a contractor for the state, who actually did no real physical work aside from crunch numbers and measure line. Which means that he had more than enough money to funnel into his hobby, and worst of all being the fact that he was a "That Guy".
He could spend more than enough to refit four armies and have someone else paint them, before two weeks had passed and that was a repeated problem with him. As he would quickly become either bored with his armies, or upset that they didn't perform as he liked and would scrap them. It's needless to say that playing any sort of match with him across the table from you, was an exercise in complete frustration. Even more so for the fact that he was not exactly the most legitimate player either. As he'd been caught cheating several times and had been banned from Raven's, another local shop that has since closed.. RIP #criesinternally.
I was set to play my first match of the league against D, who I did no know was my opponent until the last day. So I really didn't want to deal with this his particular form of "BS" and quickly reworked my army to something a bit more shall we say... serious. Meaning I removed all of my IG and put in the rest of my GK heavy hitters.
Needless to say that D did not let me down on bringing a typical list for himself. It was a Ultramarines list that was just nothing but a bucket of salt.
He abused several rules that did not allow him to have an actual organized army, but it did allow him to bring in over a dozen Razorbacks, plotting down Laz/Plas on all of them. A tactical squad for all of them, save for two veteran squads and three devastator squads. With a singular librarian running as as barebones as he could managed.
I managed to win, but just barely. As I lost my two Nemesis DKs in the first two rounds. He just drove up with two razorbacks a piece and repeatedly attempted to tank shock them and due to either the terrain, or other models. One was outright killed. While the other went down to concentrated fire.
I on the other hand managed to drop a vortex of doom in his back line, and then gated my librarian out, while letting the Paladins have their fun.
This game sits in my memory because it was probably one of the hardest slogs I've had to deal with, ever. D would argue with every inch of ground I gained, act like he didn't recall multiple rules and when he pulled his own actions. Would somehow morph into a walking index on 40k rules & regulations. Not only that, but the man would bring printed rules sheet/faqs instead of his books. So you would have to be knowledgeable enough to catch that a troop had something extra added to their stats.
