I think we all know that Time Team produced one of the best moments of TV - the fake sword dig. Tony's anger is not that they've been lied to but that someone would exploit their passion for personal gain. He's hurt as a lover of history.
Not something I ever really watched. My brother works/worked (bloody Covid) in historical re-enactment and was incensed over how shoddily they've done some of their stuff over the years. Bloke getting killed in a joust was the biggest cock-up, and apparently could have been easily avoided if they'd used actual experts.
Great! I binged a load of it again over lockdown - it's really interesting to see how the technology moved on between series/seasons.

Yeah, there are a few episodes that have upset historians, re-enactors, etc.. It's in a weird place of trying to be accurate while also entertaining and it doesn't always work.
I really enjoyed Time Team in the past. But my wife volunteered at a local Museum and at a local dig and nobody there had a good word to say about them. Local volunteers do the grunt work and the 'talent' get the glory. Tony's 'trench etiquette' is appalling and he's a right grump.
Time Team has now returned. Dig One, Day One just premiered on YouTube.
We may not have Tony Robinson involved, but his replacement, Dr Gus Casley-Haylford is a most acceptable substitute.
Other than that? The format is the same - but I feel the appeal is greater, because each dig is going to be three episodes of roughly half and hour. It is glorious and every single one of you should go and watch it right effing now
I’ll even give you a link so you can’t say Old Uncle Grotsnik never gives you anything?
not so sure about Dr Gus as his voice is very soothing rather than the excitement of Tony which i think was part of what carried the program but i'll have to watch more and see
Oh absolutely, they'd have had to find somebody naturally as exuberant if they wanted to recreate that bit of the feel of it
Having watched the two episodes i'm ok with Dr Guy (although he's yet to try and jump into the trench, so he's only got one episode left to get that done)
I’m just stoked Time Team is back. The format as originally mentioned is super solid - break down really quite complicated techniques, method and advanced/learned knowledge to pretty much layman’s terms, without actually dumbing down or sensationalising the whole shebang.
Televisual/Youtube perfection in my mind. The difference between adapting to different levels of knowledge and just dumbing it down.

That was my thought too. I think the other presenter, Natalie, has a bit more of that exuberance, but they didn’t use her as much. Still, watched all three episodes tonight and it felt very much like Sunday evenings had been restored to their natural order!

I agree, Sunday nights have been returned to their rightful order in our house.
I think my only “complaint” is that Dr Gus is a bit lower energy than Tony was. He’s not a bad presenter by any means, but doesn’t quite add the zing. Natalie seems to do that a bit more (and they seemed to use her a little more in these episodes?)
Judging by the number of ads YouTube has been throwing in, I assume it’s been successful, so hopefully more to come in future. (Aside, I wish there was a way to get YouTube to do a more conventional ad break in a longer video like this, rather than stopping every 5 minutes for a 5-second ad.)
Edit: Just realised I said pretty much the same things after the first episode Well, at least I’m consistent, I suppose…

I loved the new episodes. The production values are much higher even though it is a Youtube series currently and all the new remote sensing, geophysical and IT tech makes for much more detailed analysis.
I remember the first ever episode, where they were all huddled around a dot-matrix printer near Athelney, looking for King Alfred's refuge. It's all a far cry from those days.
That’s another thing I really enjoy about Time Team as a whole, when watch in vague release order. You can see how the tools and knowledge available to them progressed and developed.
After all, it’s one thing to get your archaeological mitts on say, geophys, but interpreting the results is an art in itself.

Looks like they've reached the point where the VR tech is going to be easy enough for the 'ordinary' archaeologists to use as well as the specialists
which means the coin folk, bone folk, pottery folk etc are going to be able to add their specialist expertise into the mix directly which will work a lot better rather than having to play chinese whispers with a 3D guy or gal
