Sometimes a night is too long and lonely for one movie to get you thru it. That's when you need a double feature.

So recommend two movies that are actually better to watch together than separately.

I'll start with the original failsafe and Dr. Strangelove.

Failsafe is a dark, harsh, gritty and hard look at nuclear war that pulls no punches but isn't as depressing as 'on the beach'. it was an excellent movie for it's day and still is.

Dr. Strangelove is a dark satirical comedy that satirizes things without parodying them, and yes, satire is different from and harder to do than parody.

Watching them both is a bit of a roller coaster ride from one extreme to the other. Not bad.

Alien and aliens goes without saying.

The blob 58 and the blob 88 are an interesting look at how america changed in 30 years.

The easy answer is 'take any franchise and watch two movies from it'.

When the kids start getting a little older, watching Cinderella and Ever After provides a bit of perspective to growing up. Likewise, any fifties cowboy movie next to Dances with Wolves provides an interesting contrast in how America viewed Native Americans at different times.

Both The Incredibles and Megamind are thoroughly entertaining animated superhero movies that dip their toe into the more serious issues of what it means to be a hero in the first place.

If you're in the mood for some goofy comedy that doesn't dip into sheer silliness, you can do way worse than doubling up Love At First Bite and Zorro, the Gay Blade... assuming you can find them anymore.

One thing I do not recommend. Don't do the 'drink every time an old James Bond movie does something you'd never get away with in a modern film' game. You might barely make it out of Dr. No without getting completely smashed, but you'll never make it through From Russia With Love, much less Goldfinger.

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!
My job here is done.

I just recently got the Criterion Collection Blu-ray of that in. Looking forward to watching it soon.

I would say Alien and Aliens is a good double feature. Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (1981) also works well together. Evil Dead II into Army of Darkness would be a fun evening.

Some of the OG monster movies work well paired together. I would go Dracula (1931) into Frankenstein (1931) or for bigger monsters King Kong (1933) into Godzilla (1954)

I’ve thought of some more pairings I would likely go with.

Krull and Willow or Labyrinth and Legend for some weird 89’s fantasy.

Big Trouble in Little China and The Last Dragon for comedic martial arts action.

Hudson Hawk and Last Action Hero, misunderstood gems. Or Hudson Hawk and Showgirls—movies half the cast and crew knew were comedies, and half knew were not comedies.

Cats and The Apple, wtf musicals.

Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead could work as the transatlantic versions of the same comedy zombie apocalypse

I’d say Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Shaun of the Dead.

Both come from the same era and both helped revive the genre.

I thought about that. The other option would be Dawn of the Dead (2004) and 28-Days Later (for similar reasons).

You cant have a double feature thread without this.

As for the movies maybe I'd go a black and white pair of Creature From The Black Lagoon + Young Frankenstein.
Or any of the modern Star Wars trilogy followed by Space Balls to remind me why modern Star Wars is even a thing. Merchandising!

Maybe 28 Days and Shaun? Both superior films in their own right.

Evil dead 2 and Army of Darkess. The latter is the conclusion of the previous movie and combined together they last less than 3 hours, which makes the double feature watch quite reasonable.

The Most Dangerous Game and King Kong.

The Valley of Gwangi and Jurassic Park.

Conan The Barbarian and Fire & Ice.

DragonSlayer and Reign Of Fire.

The Lost Boys and Interview With The Vampire.

The Howling and An American Werewolf In London.

Forbidden Planet and Blazing Saddles. It just works okay. Just shut up and take my word for it.

As to a godzilla double feature, i'd go with the original, and then shin godzilla.

As to a james bond double, maybe almost any of the first series of films followed by Craig's casino royale.

Someone said that merchandising made star wars, it wasn't the first film series to be mass merchandised, the planet of the apes series had the whole merch storm too.

After binging MST3K my thought on an extra cheesy double feature would be Puma Man and Warrior of the Lost World.

Both feature Donald Pleasance as a mind-controlling villain and it's easy to imagine a connection between his plot in Puma Man and the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Warrior of the Lost World.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.

You see, I was think The Apple and Xanadu.

Also, I think a pairing of ANY Ralph Bakshi animated films would be mind melting.

Skip the middle-man
The Seven Samurai and Battle Beyond the Stars

I've a lot fondness for Battle Beyond the Stars and not just because of Sybil Danning. I've got the soundtrack somewhere. Vinyl, of course.

I was thinking of The Magnificent Seven as the middle-man. Not that you should skip it, of course. It's awesome.

Never Let Me Go & The Island. It‘s more or less the same premise, but very differently played out.

The Long Goodbye & The Big Lebowski. Marlowe is no Dude, but his apartment and lifestyle seem to have influenced the Dude a bit.
