Yes,was looking for an alternative that would allow me to use my toys. After they announced AoS 3.0 and dropped a codex for an army I play right before...it was the literal straw that broke the camel’s back. Somebody recommended them on a FB group, and I think they are the best thing to happen to MY toys.

Legends are playable (buggies for Orks, and the way they are going oldmarines as well). Orks have the option of a workable red paint job. For you young’ is that may mean nothing, but like 5th edition, iirc, they get extra movement cause red paint goes fast. And I feel they are far more balanced than the cheese, err army of the month.

We decided that we are getting the codexes, and only the codexes for 9th edition of the armies we play. But even the iguard, excuse me, astra militarum, since we could not copyright common words, are more competitive. Why space marines (the Heinlein estate said no, you don’t) became Astartes.

And from a game design perspective, it’s just a better ruleset, with a narrow probability table. This is more lethal, and less forgiving to mistakes, but that is part of the fun. And you know where it really shines? Solo play.

I wish I had found it six months ago. The best part, it’s miniature agnostic, so...either eBay rescues, or third party minis at this point. However, I have lots of minis to paint still...so there is that. We may even play a game this weekend, not just my solo, kick the tires around. We did last week, and it was lots of fun.

I like these rule sets a lot. I've been playing against my wife and people from my D&D group and they're really easy to teach to non-wargamers.

Fast to play, fun, and low investment. A wide variety of forces available and miniature agnostic.

One thing it isn't is especially well balanced - it's definitely easy to break if you want and some stuff is overpowered or underpowered. They do update it a lot trying to fix that, but it is never perfect.

That's not a big problem for me, because I am basing the lists around my collection and can balance things for my games. But it's surprisingly well balanced for what it is.

It's really gotten me back into wargaming. I'd kinda dropped out since 40K 6th/7th and Warmahordes Mk3 both disappointed me badly.

Yes, they work in balance. I also work around my collection, and it is extensive. What I like is that Guard is far more effective than just flashlights.

I especially like to play the skirmish versions of both Grimdark Future and Age of Fantasy, and I am really intending some day to use their starship game to get my Star Wars Armada minis on the table.

I will probably try to use Warstuff (one of their "One Off" games) with Lego minifigures to get my son into gaming.

Yeah I'm keen to try out the fleet game. It looks cool! I'm waiting for Dropfleet minis to come back into stock on the German online shop I use.

Played Grimdark Future with my father on our kitchen table. Dwarf Guilds vs Prime Brothers. It's certainly fun, and fast. Our first time, of course, came with some forgotten rules. I was wondering why his Prime Brothers were being so easily felled by my Dwarfs, and it turns out they have 5+ FNP.

I will probably be using this for my sci-fi games from here on out.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

Tried Age of Fantasy today for the first time, 1000 pts Goblins vs High Elves. Fairly slick system, some rules ambiguities. Similar play experience than AoS but less faffing about with the books. Took an hour to finish. Not being locked in combat and the chance to fight multiple times per turn open up some cool choices. Gonna play again. I was surprised by the fagility of many units, especially cavalry.

Who won? I've done a couple of games of Goblins vs. Dwarves and the Dwarves have had it fairly easy both times.

Goblins and it was not even close. Boss on Manglers and 6 trolls pushed him off objectives and an immovable object of 20 spearmen held my side.

how does this work as a 40k like game?

Pretty well, in my opinion. It's like, totally different mechanically but if you're looking for a way to use your 40k models in a fairly satisfying way, it works.

I'm on a podcast about (video) game design:

And I also stream tabletop painting/playing Mon&Thurs 8PM EST

I'm really liking the look of it myself. I haven't played any games yet since my pre-COVID regulars have either moved away or are hardcore into GW and just not interested in a "knockoff" game, but for me it looks dang near perfect.

I haven't played any of 9th edition 40k yet, and while there's things I definitely like about it I'm finding it so hard to get back into. I tried to make a basic Primaris list as a "house army" and it was just too much. Looking at OPR, I'm just glad to be free of they layers upon layers of extra stuff.

Now I've just got to actually build and paint a house army so I can play the dang thing...

Quite well. It's a rules-lite and free way to play some games with (primarily) 40K and Mantic Warpath/Deadzone figures.

Playing a game tonight, my newly painted Crimson Fists vs. my recently painted Necrons! Doing all the armies myself is a pain in the arse but I'm happy with the outcomes.

Edit to add: Yeah so we played! Ended up as a nice close game, I did some teaching for the new player and he ended up winning. It swung back and forth in an interesting way.

I let him pick his list and he wanted the Land Raider in his list because it was so cool, and that ended up being the brick his army was centred on. We were playing until one side was wiped out to keep things very simple, so he played defensively, using the Land Raider as a physical block to my units.

I slowly wore it down and then destroyed it with some scarabs while the rest of our forces dueled it out. Came down to one squad of Necron Warriors vs. a couple of Marine Characters and a small squad of Marines.

I'm pretty satisfied with how it went, but I definitely think we'd have a better and more interesting game by introducing some objectives, so I'm going to put all my spare 32mm bases to work making some objective markers. I might pick up a necromunda objectives box to make some generic imperial ones, going to use infestation markers for my Tyranids I'm working on.

Hoping to play again next week, and get a regular fortnightly thing going on.

I got another game in this time, and it went in a fairly similar fashion (my opponent really likes his big tanks!).

Next time we're going to introduce some objectives into the gameplay to encourage less castling up and remove the dominance of single super powerful units a little.

Really enjoying getting back to regular gaming again though!

One Page Rules Grimdark Future and Age of Fantasy Regiments are both geared towards objective missions.

Just remember that objectives don't need to be camped on. As long as your unit was the last one near it you still control it if you move off it... just be aware that enemy units can swoop on and claim it from you. That I think opens up some interesting uses for units.

Fast cavalry or (jet) bikes for example are great at this.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

Yeah, I can definitely see that. I'm teaching someone who is completely new to wargaming how to play, so I was keeping it simple at first, but I think objective based play would really improve things. I was also thinking of eventually applying some of the mission rules from 3e 40K - stuff like capturing table quarters or having units in opposite deployment zones, or the old bunker rules and the like could be really fun in One Page Rules.

The full rulebooks are well worth getting as they have some nice missions.the 3rd edition 40k book has some wonderful missions.

My idea to make it interesting is to have 5 objectives numbered 1-5. Each player gets 3 cards from their own deck of 5 cards numbered 1-5. These are kept hidden and the player who controls the most of their card objectives wins.

Allows for some bluffing and trickery, while keeping things simple.

I've been wanting to give these a try for a while, once I got over my completely petty annoyance that the rules are more than one page.

They used to be one page, bit with the addition of special rules they are now 2 pages... just means that it is one piece of paper that uses both sides.

I might give that objective rule a try! I've picked up a set of necromunda objectives to make use of for my next game. As to the 'not really one page', heh, I thought so too. But I can fit all the army and core rules in one of those plastic pockets that goes in a folder! That's just so refreshing when I look at the stacks and stacks of books for other systems.

I gave them a try the other day and I quite enjoyed the game!

So I forgive them. And I suppose that One Page Rules, Give or Take a Couple Pages doesn't flow quite as well.

Got another game in using objectives as I said, and it 100% improved the game. Much more interesting choices, and a much more dynamic game as well. We also played at 2000 points, which gave us a couple more units each to play around with.

Heroes seem fairly weak overall, and my opponent took three of them. A psychic, a captain in destroyer armour and an engineer. The captain really didn't seem worth the cost. The Psychic at least had some cool utility powers. I dunno, I think you'd almost always be better off with another unit or two. Having a hero commander is always cool of course, I just found the captains in particular underwhelming. They have very few attacks for their high points cost.

To me though the game definitely still "feels" like a proper wargame despite being very stripped down, and I'm enjoying watching my opponent learn the system and figure things out. Been a real blessing to have found this because I think it'd be a lot harder to teach 40K to my friend.
