Highlord with a Blackstone Fortress

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Wood comes in different natural colours and they change as the wood ages, is oiled, worn or otherwise.

I do know that certain types of wood are used for certain jobs, but I don't really know much of anything beyond that.

When I painted archers I paint their bows as ash or yew, with sapwood along the leading edge, a dull yellow strip with a red wood or pale wood behind. I know this form making my own bows decades ago. I have forgotten what few bowmaking skills I had, and have no other carpentry skill at all to speak of. Though I know from craftsmen that a complex wooden device like a mill or a crossbow might have different types of wood for different purposes. It isn't quite as simple as painting them all the same shade of brown.

While I mostly, in fact almost exclusively paint fantasy and can get away with anything really what I require from Dakka are three or four colour swatches including recommended highlight weathering etc so that I can have a repetoire of wood colour schemes to copy.

Basecoat, wash and highlight please, though other techniques welcome.

If I can get wood colours for ships, furniture, wooden weapons and shield in particular I would be happy. General purpose timber. I could look to modern sources but a lot of modern wood is stained or uses colours like mahogany which are not available to medieval craft. Again, yes I can have mahogany for fantasy, but given the choice I would rather get it right, as many of my items especially terrain are intended for cross purposes.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.
