Welcome to the voting thread of May's challenge, From Ages Past. This last month, entrants were tasking with digging up miniatures from the history of fictional and real worlds (or the history of their Pile of Shame), and we've got a very diverse range of entries. Ancient warriors, powerful relics, retro models and some absolute classics on show. As always, you can vote for as many entries as you like, for any reason that they catch your eye. You're also very welcome to leave feedback for the entrants, and many of the images link through to the Dakka gallery if you fancy leaving a vote or two there as well.

A lot of cool pieces that really bring back some nostalgia for me, and others I've never even seen before! My 3 votes, in no particular order other than in the OG post:

JoshInJapan - Chaos Lord

There's something about the combination of the colors that really speaks to me about this piece. The execution is clean and simple, but there's a grit to it that I really adore.

Freya - Darth Vader

I think the technical execution could be neatened up (it's pretty grainy in a lot of parts), but I love the idea of the opposing light sources. There's a lovely ambiance to this piece that really grabbed my attention.

Pneumo - Blood Angels Bust

It's a simple piece, but what really caught my eye was the battle damage, particularly on the pauldron trims, and on the faceplate. Very cool, although I think this piece needs a little more depth in it's lights and shadows (because it's a bust and it's size, you can really cheat/get away with natural lighting to help sell the three-dimensionality of it, but (particularly in the red), there's a flatness to it that makes this feel unfinished.

Honorable Mention

Warpig1815 - Aristeia

You say you're a one-hit wonder, but this piece was pretty good! There's a lot of good things here, but my issue with this piece is that it feels...half-way. Much like the Blood Angels Bust, I feel like you can get away with using natural light to create the volumes, and I can definitely see some work that you've done particularly in the helmet and greaves, and in the cape, to create that highlighting and shading, but overall it feels flat, and there's no focal point. I think some stronger contrast to bring attention to the figure, particularly the face/head and torso/upper chest, while darkening some of the background, would help to create something more cohesive.

Speaking of cohesion, it's...very clean, and there's a gap between the palette of the base, and the palette of the figure, that creates this separation, like it's just a figure plopped down into a display, rather than a warrior stalking through the ruins of a temple. Even something as simple as some weathering powders/pigments at the base of the pillars, some variation in the grass using the same powders, and then dirtying up his sandles/feet, maybe the bottom of his cape, would do wonders. To take it a step further, introduce the same color mix into your highlights and shadows to give the illusion that the entire thing is being lit by the same light source (which, again keys back into more depth with your lights and shadows.

And I know this is a minor point, but that base trim could be neatened. The gap/line stage right where the steps meets the base should be gap filled, and I think the corners should be smooth and clean, without the added corner pieces.

My votes, in no particular order:

Tyranid Horde: What can I say? A classic aircraft and a stellar paintjob with some excellent weathering. It may not be the flashiest model, but you hit all the right notes in making it look convincing with a good appreciation of detailing. Superb effort!

Freya - Another excellent submission! I particularly like the technical execution of the warm underside OSL merging into the cold upper OSL with no distinct jarring - very good. As DV8 notes, the model is a bit grainy, but I'm guessing that's an issue with the medium (3D print?) and it doesn't interfere too much with the overall job. Great work!

the_balloon_dog - I knew this one was making it into my votes when I first saw it. The atmosphere of this piece is great, and your pallette (purple and green) is quite adventurous but not at all jarring. And technique wise - can't fault it. Well done!

ms07b3 - As with Freya, the OSL work on these guys is exceptional and those power weapons are exquisite. I also really like the water bases - it wouldn't be my first choice to pair with Iron Hands, but it certainly gives them something unique. Again, excellent work.

Jadenim - Yesssss! These are great! You've captured the sheen of the carapace perfectly, and the off-green tint is really nicely blended into the model too! I can almost hear the chittering - great work!

@DV8
Spoiler:
Fair comments. Deep contrast is something I struggle with stylistically because historic colours were not as contrasting as the wide range of modern dyes and materials produce now. Dyes were naturally sourced, with an attendant lack of vibracy and that somewhat contributes to my hesitation to deeply contour the model by strengthening vibracy. However, I am being a bit hypocritical because Tyrian Red, made from crushed murex snails, was one of the few ancient dyes which was more vibrant than the traditional madder dye. So I do take your critque on-board. I have plans for another model in this scale, so I shall see if I can introduce some starker contrast.

Regarding weathering - it is there, subtly. But the pictures don't perhaps exhibit it too well. In fact, every area you point out already has a light dusting, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to go too heavy (The battle in question was at the height of summer, and conditions would be dusty but not muddy). And this particular Spartiate didn't fight in the dusty general melee, but charged out alone. However, I think, as above, my historical focus somewhat diminishes the artistic execution by being too stringent. Again, good point - something I can build on.

Lastly - yep, that line was something I was aware of. Trouble is, I the base is built around a foam core - and I'd already done most of the basing (wood with plaster coating) before realising that the top steps were slightly large, pushing the plasticard out (Meaning any filling would actually be extensively grading the pieces together ). Mea culpa - not my finest construction .

All that said though, I appreciate the feedback greatly - very constructive

Once again, a whole bunch of nice models this month.

me: I think I captured lighting in a bottle with this one. Oldhammer models can be hit or miss, but this guy is a Jes Goodwin sculpt, and that's always a good place to start. The texture on his armor made the NMM a lot easier than a smooth surface would have been.

Captain Brown: I'm a little sad that there are no more Shining Spears, but this set sort of makes up for it. I like the "splotchy" effect you used on the platform, and the vivid green Scorpion was an inspired choice.

Graphite: I love me some RT orks. I feel like using a darker green would sell the camo effect a little better, but you certainly managed to capture the Orks' inability to really understand what camo is supposed to be.

KidCthulhu: A slightly newer but still very old ork. Your choice of garish colors is absolutely period-appropriate.

Freya: Three different lightsources--that's a bold choice. Kudos!

Pariah Press: Those guys were Imperial Army, not Guard, right? You did a great job on their faces-- GW models of that vintage have really craggy features, which I find difficult to paint with any sort of subtlety.

the_balloon_dog: I've never painted anything at that scale, so your techniques are pretty close to magic to my mind. You really capture the age of the bone, and the foliage is a nice touch.

Aash: The pinks and purples contrast nicely with the earthy tones of the armor. I wonder if the guy in the middle needs either lighter or darker tones for his face so as to differentiate it from the armor.

DV8: Another really nice piece. I always admire your ability to force shadows rather than relying on ambient light.

Tyranid Horde: A lovely model. Scale model techniques are so different from wargaming miniatures that I've not been able to make myself take the jump.

Yorkright: The warmth of this guy's face really stands out against the TMM of his armor, and draws the eye right to it.

Warpig 1815: Nice, clean blending on this model-- it seems like it must have taken a long time to get it right.

Pneumo: A lovely model. I like the cracked blooddrop on the right shoulderpad.

vejut: The aboriginal designs on the boomerangs are a nice touch that really bring the model to life.

Nevelon: Another set of old, funky models. You're technique for the blue (as you explained in your P&M blog) seems like it would take a long time, but the results speak for themselves.

Flinty: the six-legged mech is the stand out model for me. I like your weathering work a lot.

ms07b3: I really like your glowy Thunder Hammer, and your choice of basing is cool and unique.

ZergSmasher: The lettering in the book is a cool touch, and I really like your work on the eagle (raven?) on the front.

Jadenim: Your choice of very very dark green makes these guys seem more real than just glossy black would have.

E3DD: A cool, characterful set of models. I like the way you got the colors on the headdress and cape to fade into one another.

Tallandra: The way you picked out all the little details breaks up the solid black mass nicely, without seeming too garish or distracting.

Arakasi: You captured the cave girl's sneer nicely, and your highlights on the skin are quite effective.

MobileSuitRandom: Your choice of earthtones and the addition of the vines really sell the age of the model.

Viterbi: The red cloaks and metallic blue armor are a radical departure from how one usually sees skeletons. Very nice.

Jamie Shred: I admire your lighting/OSL effects on the weapons.

Paradigm: I'm not familiar with either the game or the TV show, so I can't speak to the accuracy of this model, but your work really gives him a sense of age and/or experience.

Turaxa: I like your choice of Gundam colors for the robot. The white areas would probably benefit from a darker base color, with deeper shadows and just highlight of white. As it is, the white sort of blends together.

I'll have to end this here and go to work. I'll finish commenting later.

Pretty nice crop of entries on display here! I'll go ahead and give everyone some feedback:

JoshInJapan: That is a really cool model! Death Guard, I presume, based on the plague fly look? The paintjob really fits the model well also.

Captain Brown: Old-school paintjobs on old-school models, which is always fun to see! Those turned out fantastic!

Graphite: Another classic model in a garish classic paintjob! I like the blending between green and yellow all over the model.

KidCthulhu: I'm sounding like a broken record, but you also really got the classic look on a very characterful older model. The purple hair is probably my favorite part; really helps sell it that this guy is "different" from the other Orks.

Freya: The gritty paintjob really fits this version of Darth Vader pretty well. Although given his past experiences I don't think he'd want to be that close to lava...

Pariah Press: Aside from the cool, almost goofy old models, you took the old-school vibe even further with the bright green base rims (Goblin Green, right?). That's a nice touch!

the_balloon_dog: That is a really cool bust, and you did a wonderful job on it. It really does look ancient, as well it should!

Aash: I know those models well; I used to have two sets of them before I sold my Death Guard (never got around to painting them myself). They turned out great! The rust on the weapons is a perfect extra detail for Death Guard.

DV8: Now this is a hilarious image; She-Hulk yeeting the TARDIS into a bunch of bad guys (or maybe Daleks?). The paint on both She-Hulk and her improvised missile is very crisp and clean, although the TARDIS looks a bit more turquoise than it does on Dr. Who (guess that was to avoid copyright laws, eh? Lol jk! ). Seriously, awesome job!

Tyranid Horde: I love it when people put historical models in these challenges, and you did an amazing job on this plane! The weathering is especially good; really makes it look like it's seen some action.

Warpig1815: That is a really cool little vignette you've got going on here! The paintwork is very crisp and the scenery looks very well-composed to compliment the figure. Truly awesome work!

Pneumo: This is a really cool and different piece. The weathering looks excellent and really gives it a battle-tested look. If anything the pedestal looks a bit small and plain for such a big impressive model, but that's a small quibble.

Vejut: I love the fur on this latest animal buddy of yours! It really turned out great!

Nevelon: These old Space Marines have more character on them than a whole chapter of the newer guys. I've always loved the rich vibrant blue you use on your Smurfs, and it turned out well here.

Flinty: I love the mix of different canines in this group. Not sure what the big spider tank thingy is, but it's cool.

ms07b3: This is pretty impressive use of OSL from the glowy weapons! You are certainly braver than I am for doing that. It certainly contrasts well with the otherwise gritty look of the models.

ZergSmasher: Overall I'm happy with how I did, even if it really doesn't "stand out" compared to everyone else on here. I can't think of a whole lot I'd do different on this model. It was certainly fun and challenging to paint!

Jadenim: Those Xenomorphs turned out really good! Basically just metallic paints with some different shades, right? I saw some guides saying to do that for these models, and I was skeptical, but now that I see it I think I'm sold on that method for painting these and I'll probably do it whenever I get around to painting mine.

E3DD: Lizardmen might be my second favorite army from the old WHFB (after Tomb Kings), and you did a fine job on these examples.

Tallandra: Yay, another Ravenwing fan! I like the freehand crossed key design on the front left panel; that really looks great. The shrine on the back really looks nice as well, and kudos to you for not breaking off the sword!

Arakasi: That's certainly an interesting model! Very nicely painted too. The skin really turned out well, but shouldn't she have more body hair seeing as razors won't be invented for thousands of years? I'll see myself out...

MobileSuitRandom: This model fits the theme on two counts. It looks weathered and well-used, and the Vyper Jetbike has to be one of the oldest plastic kits Games Workshop still makes. I really like the contrast between the drab hull color and the bright blue gems.

Viterbi: The models look great; I really like the colors. I kind of wish we had some close-up shots of them to really see all the details.

Jamie Shred: I'm not familiar with the subject material for these, but the paintjobs look really good!

Paradigm: I've never played any of the Witcher games (or watched the series), but this model does look like a pretty good representation of the character. Don't toss a coin to this one, though; wouldn't want to scratch that nice paint job!

Turaxa: I like the bright colors on this model. One thing that would really help it pop would be some shading; it would really bring out the texture on this model.

Maharg: These turned out amazing! I really like the choice of color palette and how it unifies them as a squad.

Chris56: I like the bright reds on this model, and the freehand on the bottom of the cloak is a really nice touch! The photos are a tad blurry (but not horribly so), something I myself have struggled with at times.

Midget Gems: Pity you didn't have time to do the base, as the model itself turned out really good! I love the highlights, as they really make it pop.

feltmonkey: Chewie looks great here; you did really well getting the patterns on his fur just right. The face is probably what sells it, though; absolutely perfect!

bantha_beast: Really crisp colors, and the cloth especially looks good with those highlights. A finished base would have been nice, but honestly the model still looks great even without it.

Overall not only a large number of entries but a generally high quality of said entries! You all should be proud of your work. Shout out as always to Paradigm for running these things. See you all in the next one!

Thanks JoshInJapan and ZergSmasher for the comments! I wanted to try a slightly different color scheme. Regarding detailed pics, still not comfortable with the "real" camera and I want my paintjobs always not to near

And this month I'm not gonna be completely lazy and just vote, but at least comment a bit on my votes

JoshInJapan: Such a weird creature and a more than fitting paintjob. The gold and green contrast really great and the NMM on the sword is a nice touch.

Captain Brown: Your entry fits the theme the best in my eyes, first because, well, Eldar and because they are nice, but very old sculpts. The neon green one pushed me over the edge for choosing this entry, it's so vibrant and a nice departure from the blues.

Freya: Not in love with the helmet of the sculpt, but the rest looks very cool and damn, that is some amazing OSL with different properties.

vejut: I love the sculpt, the paintjob and especially the freehand on his stick. You can really imagine him travelling the Outback in the mist of time.

Tallandra: Great work with all the edge highlighting and bringing other colors on this piece with the statue ornaments and such. The gun looks a little flat in contrast, at least on the pics, I think some edge highlighting on the red would help.

Thanks for the comments guys!

@ZergSmasher, pretty much, I used a guide I found online, but the essence was:

Undercoat black
Heavy metal ( ) dry brush (I used lead belcher)
Dark blue wash (Drakenhof)
Green wash (Biel)
A light metal dry brush to reestablish / reinforce the highlights (this is the key step)
A final blue wash, to darken everything back down
Silver highlights on teeth, claws, stingers, etc. (All the lethal bits!)
Black wash on the silver for texture (Nuln)
And finally a 50:50 coat of ‘ard coat/lahmian medium as a semi-gloss finish.
Base to suit.

If you wanted to go for a browner tint, as per Alien 3 / 4, probably drop the blue for a sepia? The guide I found did have a recipe for that, but I can’t remember the link; Google is your friend!

Some really nice and/or old figures here, quite a few I haven't seen before (or already forgotten about).
Was pretty hard to pick only a few to vote on, but here we go:

Graphite - Ork Dreadnought: Really oldschool model. It's a bit goofy but still very orky, and you just went all out on that with the way you painted it. Plus he looks so happy.

Warpig1815 - Aristeia: Very clean and on-point painting, and a great and consistent piece with the base and scenery too. The no-helm version looks a bit creepy though...

vejut - Platypus Warrior: At first glance this one looked pretty goofy to me, but the closer I looked at it the more it grew on me. Some very nice details, and you did a great job with the fur and the cloak imo.

ZergSmasher - Sammael: Lots of well-done small details, like on the cockpit, the book and the shoulders. You also did a very good job painting the big white areas. Dunno if that's on my screen, but the photos look a little grainy to me, or maybe too focussed on just a small part of the model?

Maharg - Necromunda Ratskins: I suck at painting skin, so big kudos for doing such a good job at painting so much of it. I also like the blend of primitive and imperial tech in those.

@ZergSmasher: I'm not having as much trouble with the keys symbol as I did on my previous figures, but I still need some more practice to get it more even. And we'll see about the sword after I transport the model a couple times...

@Viterbi: Thanks for the feedback. I did some highlighting on the gun, but only with a brighter red. It's hard to see even on the actual model, so I guess I'll have to be more bold with it in the future.

I agree it's definitely a bit grainy. I'm not sure if it was my airbrushing or if it was just because it's a 3d print... but it definitely influenced the way I painted after the fact. I'm glad in a way I made up for my past mistakes on OSL with this and feel a bit vindicated haha xD

It could be the 3d print or maybe my airbrushing. Either way I agree it came out a bit grainy. I'm gonna fuss with my settings this next month and hope for the best.

What can I say? I like pain.

Well his base WAS on Mustafar... so I mean maybe he's a masochist?

I agree. Sculpted helmet looks pretty meh. I wanted to really challenge myself to paint something awesome in under 4 hours. I spent most of my time on the lava and felt pretty good.

My picks:

DV8: Obviously a fantastic model and top of the top imo. I love she hulk, I love doctor who, all my nerd fantasy in one mini and I'm dying here.

Josh: I do love your pieces. My only criticism is the sword and how the transitions seem a bit off in location. Other than that, I love it.

E3DD: I saw these on Insta too and I can't get over the transitions on those feathers. Excellent color choices and execution on these.

For everyone else,

I was really impressed with this months submissions and I do love seeing everyone turn out like this. It makes me happy to have something fun and chill like this. I don't know about your thoughts on this competition but it certainly is challenging me each and every month to be better than I was before. I really appreciate you all.

Yea, I don't so much mean vibrance or saturation, which I think you're referring to, but rather contrast in value (that is, how bright or dark it is, and how intense the lights and shadows are). I'm fine with the saturation of your piece, I just think it lacks contrast in value. A really good test is to take a photo of your piece and grayscale it; I imagine that your piece will end up looking pretty much the same uniform grey value throughout.

The rest is fair, I have that problem sometimes too where my weathering ends up getting lost in photos too.

JoshInJapan wrote:

Thanks! Really pushing contrast in values has been a focus of mine this past year, year and a half. I still sometimes look back at old pieces and think "well I could have pushed it a bit more".

Lol jk! ). Seriously, awesome job!

Thank you! I watched a lot of Dr. Who in years past, and my girlfriend is a pretty big fan of the show, so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone by scratching my nostalgic itch a bit while at the same time triggering her (she hates the fact that it's a Marvel superhero throwing the TARDIS). I ended up taking some artistic license with the coloring of it; the phone booth is a much darker, more imperial blue, but because I use a lot of Ice Yellow and Ivory as an atmospheric highlight tone throughout my entire collection, I ended up pushing the overall colors of the TARDIS towards that turquoise-yellow tone as well, just so it creates a more cohesive color palette and "feels" nicer, even if it may not be 100% accurate.

JoshInJapan - Chaos Lord

There's something about the combination of the colors that really speaks to me about this piece. The execution is clean and simple, but there's a grit to it that I really adore.

Thanks. I didn't think that the standard pink and purple you usually see on Slaaneshi models would work for this guy. A lot of the grit comes form the model-- his armor isn't smooth plates, which made it easier to get the effect I wanted.

ZergSmasher wrote:
JoshInJapan: That is a really cool model! Death Guard, I presume, based on the plague fly look? The paintjob really fits the model well also.

He's actually a Slaaneshi model-- you can see the male/female symbols on the round thingies by his shoulder armor.

Viterbi wrote:

JoshInJapan: Such a weird creature and a more than fitting paintjob. The gold and green contrast really great and the NMM on the sword is a nice touch.

Thanks. I've had him in my Big Box of Unpainted Chaos models since I bought him in 1989-90. I'm glad to finally have him done.
Freya wrote:

Josh: I do love your pieces. My only criticism is the sword and how the transitions seem a bit off in location. Other than that, I love it.

Thanks. The sword is the reason I set the model aside for two weeks. It has at least ten coats of paint, and I'm still not entirely satisfied with it. It's the curve, I think, or at least that's my excuse.

More comments for everyone I missed yesterday:

Maharg: The browns and greys you used emphasize the savage, almost bestial nature of these models.

Chris56: The bright red armor and the pale skin are a striking combination. Also, I like the subtle freehand on the cape.

Midget Gems: All the red makes this paint job period appropriate, but the brownish shade of the red keeps it from being overbearing. Also, goblin green base FTW!

Feltmonkey: The Chewie doesn't look like a rush job. I like the variation in the fur, and the lighting effects on the bowcaster are top-notch.

bantha_beast: The edge highlighting on the armor is just about my Platonic ideal-- visible at a distance, without being overbearing. I think the either the surcoat or the golds need a little something so they don't look like the same colors, though.

Once again, congratulations to everyone for getting something done, and thanks to Paradigm for running the whole show. Most of my hobby work is focused on getting models ready for the tabletop, so I appreciate having a reason to up my game every month.

Yeah I get that feeling... I watched so many videos on nmm and I still whiffed a lot before I got it... Perhaps the most useful tip I had was that light hitting in one spot doesn't continue along the blade but bounces back off the ground and other objects. So if it hits at the top center, it'll bounce back at the bottom sides and so forth.

That's a pretty good tip, and I think I understand it intellectually. I just can't (or rather, haven't yet) developed an eye for it. I'll have to keep practicing, I guess.

Thank you! I really enjoy adding little things like that to make books look cooler. I only wish it was possible to actually have tiny readable text (not with my hands or tools, though!). The eagle on the front was actually pretty easy to do, basically just a basecoat, light shade, and then a couple of drybrush layers.

Dunno if that's on my screen, but the photos look a little grainy to me, or maybe too focussed on just a small part of the model?

Thanks! The grainy photos are probably a result of my cheap camera not liking to use the higher zoom settings. It would be hard to get closer shots without the zoom though. I've had this problem before and I'm still trying to find the best way to get the shots I need.

Really appreciate the feedback, everyone!

Just on the camera thing, have you tried using less zoom and just cropping? I have quite a decent, but older, bridge camera and it struggles to focus on miniatures at short range using anything more than about 2x zoom, so I can’t get the base image tight to the model.

I’ll second this. You are almost always going to get better results from a long shot cropped down than pressing the camera against the subject. Barring specialized equipment. There are technical explanations about F-Stop, depth of focus, and exposure time, but the TLR version is that there are tradeoffs, and if want zoom, you often loose the ability to focus on the whole model

Lots of light
Brace your camera (tripod if you got one, or just set it firm on a box)
Shotgun pictures. Digital film is cheap. Take a few pics, choose the best.

Thanks! Ironically, these are the newest lizardmen sculpts, but they share the character of the old ones. (get it? lol)

JoshInJapan wrote:
E3DD: A cool, characterful set of models. I like the way you got the colors on the headdress and cape to fade into one another.

Thank you! This was my first time attempting more than one transition on a model with an airbrush, and I'm happy with how it came out.

My thoughts:

JoshInJapan: This is some excellent NMM. I like the contrast between the yellowish gold and cold blue steel blade.

Captain Brown: No more shining spears? These aspect warriors certainly make up for it.

Graphite: I love the bright colors on this ork vehicle. It really captures the cartoony vibe of the orks.

KidCthullhu: I love the contrast between the darker ork flesh and the bright colors on the clothing.

Freya: I really like the OSL effect from the lightsaber. Something about the model seems really grainy, but I can’t put my finger on what it is.

Pariah Press: I like how the two colors on the armor and cloth complement each other while still seeming reasonable for a military outfit.

the_balloon_dog: I really love how you have mixed color into every aspect of this model. I probably would have defaulted to a more monochromatic scheme, but these colors work really well together. It almost reminds me of Craftworld Studios’ style.

Aash: More examples of how contrast paints can be utilized to achieve a great effect. I love how smooth you got the armor, I always have trouble controlling contrast paints. Nurgle models, I have to say, were practically designed for contrast paints.

DV8: I can’t tell if that TARDIS is scratch-built or not, but I love how the blue-green compliments the green on she-hulk’s skin. Yet another impressive entry.

Tyranid Horde: I don’t know a lot about historical models and model aircraft, but I do know that this is a spectacular paint job. I really like how subtle the camouflage is, it really helps add to the realism.

Yorkright: I love how the steel color and the hazard stripes really compliment each other. Is that an Alpha Legion backpack on the ground?

Warpig 1815: This… I love everything about it. The marble is crisp and realistic, the bronze is realistically aged, the skin is well colored, and more. And it comes with lore!

Pneumo: The weathering on this guy’s power armor is just right, realistic without going overboard. Definitely a piece to be proud of.

Vejut: I have never seen this mini before, but I love it. The different fur colors add contrast while maintaining the naturalistic idea of the model.

Nevelon: These models are definitely from ages past, but they still look great. Your paint job really captures the character of the models.

Flinty: I might need to borrow this idea… I really love the blue on the big spider tank thing, and the models feel very cohesive.

ms07b3: I love the idea of terminators rising up from the ocean, sand and water cascading off their backs… The models look superb, and I love the OSL on the sergeant. It’s very easy to tell which ones in charge.

ZergSmasher: That is a crisp paint job, and I really like how you shaded the white.

Jadenim: I love the subtle difference between the dark teal and dark purple shiny carapace. It really sells the idea that these are alien bugs from space.

E3DD (me): I’m really happy with this entry. I think the skin could’ve used more contrast, as the red undertones didn’t really show in the (pretty terrible) pictures. This was my first time shading gold with green, and I love the aged gold effect it had.

Tallandra: I like the purple/blue highlights on the black. They really stand out from a distance.

Arakasi: I really like how you highlighted the skin. It feels realistic and alive.

MobileSuitRandom: I love the paintjob and sculpting on this viper. It really captures the almost antique feel that the Eldar often have.

Viterbi: I like how the orange cloth and blue armor contrast. Is that a bloody flag that I see?

Jamie Shred: I really like how this crew feels like they’re part of the same family even though they are so different.

Paradigm: I love how everything about this model emphasizes the face. Often, the face is the most important part of a model, but I don’t tend to focus much attention on it. This face looks superb, and the subtle color variation throughout the model is great.

Turaxa: Even though there are a lot of colors on this model, they all work together really well.

Maharg: The skin on these models is my favorite part of them, and it compliments the furs and cloth really well.

Chris56: I have a copy of this warband sitting on my desk, and I might have to copy that red armor. It looks great!

Midget Gems: This is a cool model, and the goblin green base is a nice touch.

Feltmonkey: This is really realistic fur, with a lot of color variation. Also, props for painting those eyes, and painting them so well. I know I wouldn’t have had the guts to do that.

bantha_beast: I love the sapphire power armor on this model. Blue and tan often look good together, and this is no exception.

Anything I say, unless expressly noted, is my own opinion. Take it as you will

And the results are in. Not as crowded a podium as last month, but still tightly fought by some super entries.

Tied for 3rd with 20 vores apiece, we've got
Freya's wonderfully evoative Sith Lord

And Warpig1815 with Aristodemus The Spartan! Just 299 more to paint now, right?

In second, DV8 with the unlikely duo of She-Hulk and the TARDIS, giving a new meaning to the blue box's Hostile Action Displacement System (yes, that's a niche one for the Whovians out there... )

And finally, with an entry as creepy as it is retro, JoshinJapan takes the win with this striking Chaos Lord:
