Preparing the Invasion of Terra

Hey all!
Everybody loves a Space Marine chapter but what are your favourite Successors to the Legions? The more obscure the better!

The first 40k book I read as a young un' was Accursed Eternity by Sarah Cawkwell, which feature the Star Dragons Chapter.
Spoiler:

These lads come from the aptly named planet Draconis and ritually scar themselves with electoo's so that they glow. Plus, they have a dragon as a Chapter badge which in my books is a good choice.

Black Templars. The ones who stayed vigilant around the Eye of Terror and were the first to the fray when Chaos returned after the Scouring. Sigismund is an absolute chad who almost mortally wounded Abbadon and they're one of the few chapters that goes on doing Dorn's work without giving a feth about the Codex Astartes. Through in their fanaticism and Emperor worship and you've got the gold standard of a successor chapter in making their mark in the galaxy.

The Mentors and The Cleaved seem interesting rather interesting due to the mystery surrounding them. The Mentors for their collection of Xenos artifacts, despite being loyalists. The Cleaved have little background aside from the oil leaking from their joints. Kind hints at a Thousand Sons type of situation, but without any idea of what could have transpired.

Would be cool to see a Genesis Chapter book sometime. If the Ultramarines’s adherence of the codex can be summed up via Uriel Ventris or Captain Titus, it would be intriguing to see how a chapter that somehow has a stronger adherence to the Codex handles situations outside of their element.

I'll second the Mentors for their weird organization and ability to play nice with others.

It's not clear whom they're a successor of, but I'll also give props to the Black Dragons. Because who doesn't love some angsty, underdog mutant marines that can snikt bub the Emperor's foes with bone swords that come out of their arms?

I also like the Lamenters because sometimes the grim dark is more annoying than cool and having some superhumans actually trying to be good guys is a refreshing change of pace.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Raptors (raven guard), charcharadons (raven guard/possibly night lords chimaeric) and Minotaurs (allegedly iron warriors) get my vote.

Charcharadons, Executioners and Minotaurs.

The whole Charcharadons VS Executioners bit in the Badab War was awesome. The Executioners siding with Huron to honor their pledge, despite his secession, vs the Charcharadons absolute dedication to slaughtering all who stand against the Imperium. Not to mention what the Sharks did to the Mantis warriors.

Minotaurs are cool because of the theme, the name, and mostly the chapter master.

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

The Destroyers, even though their scheme is nigh-on impossible to paint and make look good.

Guardians of the Covenant, for Unforgiven Chapters.

Seconding the Executioners.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

Grim Forgotten Nihilist Forest.

Flesh Tearer's. Followed by the Black Templars.

The rip and tear energy of the Tearers legit sold me for the army. It just sucked ass how gimped melee was in 8th. When everything could just blow you away seemingly with ease. We're also loyalists that are commonly seen wielding chain axes. Our founder was friends with Kharn and was asked not to be present at the council of Nikea, because they were afraid of him calling the Emperor a idiot.

I've sold so many armies. :(

the stormcrows, my PERSONAL sucessor chapter of course!

but among canon chapters hmm.. proably the black templars by virtue of hearing so much about them. I admit though that none of the sucessor chapters have really grabbed my imagination

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

I think everyone of a certain age in the hobby loves the Crimson Fists right?

That Last Stand artwork was one of the biggest pulls into 40k for me.

Visually, lamenters or the howling griffons. Thing I like about successor chapters is when there only a paragraph of info on them. Then they are blank canvas as to turn them into your dudes.

Best successor chapter, as above is my own. The Warpigs.

If you count home brew.. then my own chapter, the Sentinels Devout. Founded solely to protect an imperial cardinal world. There fortress was on one of the planet’s moons and would overlook the planet, fending off the odd Ork invasion and the like. One day tyranids show up and after months of attrition the chapter is forced to do exterminatus. The whole chapter feels a deep shame for their failure and now their fortress overlooks what was once a beautiful cardinal world boasting monuments and shrines to the emperor is now a scorched death world. They now crusade all day every day in order to earn Big E’s forgiveness.

But if I had to choose an actually written chapter id have to say Mortifactors, Crimson Fists, or Black Templars

I have to second The Crimson Fists on this one. I like them so much that they are currently on my painting table. My runner-up is the Celestial Lyons.

I’ve got to agree with the others saying homebrew chapters, so in my case it’s the Night Ravens.

One of the major appeals of 40K for me is the freedom to make up your own subfaction.
