I’m curious why people play the game, and wanted to see the general reasons.

I play because I really enjoy the lore and figures, I find the rules are fine but have major issues (subjectively for me) stopping it from being my favourite rules system. With 3rd coming things will change with the rules, but at its core it still seems fairly similar.

Anyway, curious what you guys say.

Like most GW games I don't play with GW's rules, but I like the minis enough to use them for other systems (homemade or otherwise). In the case of Sigmar it's usually 9th Age (when I can make the models fit on the right bases...) or some kind of Mordheim-derived skirmish game.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

I will bitch ceaselessly about problems in AoS but, and I mean this honestly, I only care about the problems so much because I care about the game. I've had more fun with AoS than any other wargame. While I would say the core mechanics are a bit neutral on that with good/bad cancelling out the models, allegiance rules, and lore really add up to more than the sum of its parts. For me personally.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I'd like to answer why I would like to play AoS, why I continue to maintain an interest in it.
1. Availability: It's gonna be much easier for me to find people to play with than whatever other option I'd prefer mechanically, like Age of Fantasy or whatever.
2. Cool models: AoS has a lot of really cool models, I love fantasy wargaming and have a bunch of the models, and I'd like to use them in a game.
3. Setting themes: Though I find parts of the setting lacklustre, there's a lot to like in the high fantasy planescape with mad barbarians everywhere stylings of AoS and once you accept the new setting as it's own thing it can be pretty fun. There are a lot of specifics about the background I don't like, but the overall feel and tone I enjoy quite a lot.

The game;
Overall I find it's a pretty good game. It's not perfect (and never will be), but it's fun. And that's what counts most to me come game time.
And to date - W/L/D - even in games where I've been utterly annihilated on victory points or tabled, there's never been a game yet that wasn't fun.
Can't say the same concerning 40k....

The models;
* GW continues to make great models. Unfortunately a bunch of Sigmar stuff doesn't exist in previous editions of WHFB. Sure, the friends & people I play with can (and in some cases have) made house rule stats for some of it. But as we also like AoS.....
* Pretty much anything from peoples old WHFB collections can be used in Sigmar. This makes it easy for WHFB players to join in (we're not sticklers concerning the shape of your bases in my circles - play 'em as they are, it's fine.)

The models/theme;
A fair # of us in my circles more prefer the D&D/LoTR fantasy theme of orcs/goblins/elves/etc, swords & spells vs the 40k stuff or sci-fi based games.

Accessibility;
We've found that it's relatively easy to grow the fantasy end of the local wargaming scene by starting Path to Glory campaigns & small escalation leagues at the local shops. Sigmar stuff is readily available, the rules are fairly simple, & we're not sticklers for "IT MUST BE GW MODELS!" So recruiting from the ranks of D&D players & showing people how to do this on a budget is far easier than with 40k.

I sold my AoS collection to clear out some much-needed space since I hadn't played since they first introduced points. Then like a month later Broken Realms started and I properly fell in love with the setting. I'm just trying to decide what to go for restarting; Har Kuron, Skaven, or hordes upon hordes of Stunties.

AoS is an easy to learn, fun and accessable game.

What is impressive is the support and the game modes it offers without resorting to a separate game; clash of armies, narrative, skirmish, solo and coop. Are they all perfect? No, but good enough to have fun.

I'm a bit concerned that AoS 3rd edition will go the way of 40K where they do away with path-to-glory, skirmish, solo-coop and it becomes a tournament players only monstrosity.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

I understand the tourney focus dislike. But not only did 40k not get rid of other ways to play, they added Crusade to it.
And from the sounds of it they're doing doing a similar Crusade system in Sigmar 3 (at least that's the impression I get from what I read).

I play it for several reasons. I personally always wanted to play an elite Orc/Black Orc centric type army back in the day for WFB, and Ironjawz/Orruk Warclans basically gave me that army archetype which I dove into. I also like that it plays significantly different to that of 40K, so it's a good palette cleanser for when things get stale playing 40K. I also like the setting for how it doesn't have a faction like SM that hogs the limelight constantly and it really seems both the modellers and the people writing the fluff for them have a lot more fun and freedom to explore the setting that doesn't have to always tie back to one faction like Stormcast. It really highlights how much more love factions can have and develop when you don't put all your eggs into one flagship army.

I don't, really. I have some minis for use in 9th Age. I'll play Sigmar occasionally just to play something, or with friends who prefer simple games. Sigmar is in a better spot that 40k, at least until 3.0 releases, but it's rather....... flat.

Edit: Despite so many goofy minis and names, I would like to want to play more.

I don't. The models are great. The narrative is pretty cool. The game is not something I can get behind for what I am looking for in a wargame.

I would love to get involved again but I require things that AOS has never offered that even warhammer 8th edition before it was starting to fail hard at.

For the most part, if I am going to invest hundreds of dollars in a faction I don't feel it is right that that faction is gimped or super weak or that I have to own certain combination of models to be able to play.

If I'm sitting down to a game of chess, or monopoly, or catan, or whatever, I am not interested in a game where one side has a clear and gross advantage over the other before the first die has been cast.

Nor do I want to continue buying new armies every year to keep up with the meta power creep.

That is true and for a moment I thought that's what the Dawnbringer thing was all about, but turned out to be fancy lore for fancy new scenery.

I like the idea of Crusade but I've not jumped in that far with 9th edition to try it, and have heard mixed things. Apparently its a bit like Path to Glory?

A little, but the PtG content in battletomes has been very low-effort stuff for a year or so now, it was obvious they planned to replace it in the new edition. So who knows what we are going to get.

No, the bit about the scenery wasn't what I'd read. When I clicked on that I thought I'd get more info - but alas, just a sales pitch.... Sorry I can't point you to the source. It was one of those things you skim through & sorta make a mental note of & then promptly forget about it an hour later.
Doesn't matter, I'll find out in a few weeks anyways.

Crusade is vaguely like PtG in that you start off with a small force that grows over time and gains xp/advancements.
But it's much more complex. You track the XP, upgrades, and damages on a unit by unit basis. You also have to track how many pts (or PL) you're force consists of overall, not just whatever you're using during a specific game.

Gathering the Informations.

Dawnbringer Crusade is a lore thing/rumored "upgrade" to the Cities of Sigmar.

Path to Glory is being upped to match Crusade, from what's been said so far.
