I was fed up with having to write out my secondary objectives every time I played 40k.
My solution was to make cards for them. I downloaded the objectives here:

https://www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/ldkphu/secondary_printouts/

Glued them onto some coloured craft card stock to represent the different types and slid them into mtg cases

Has anyone else tried this?

Not yet, but I was planning on it. Kinda nice, because if you want a real challenge that encourages a TAC list, you could just shuffle and draw.

I like GW's card decks and all, but I spend so much on minis that I DIY when and wherever I can.

There should be an app for that...

Magic Set Editor is a program I’ve used in the past to make cards like these. Haven't gotten around to making them for 9th yet, and my PC died, so might be a bit.

Card reminders are very nice, but with the edition churn from GW, I’m loath to shell out extra for play aids that have 0 value once the edition ends.

Exactly, $30 cad a set is a bit steep considering codex changes.
Especially if you run multiple armies and are already struggling to get ahold of codexes.
