I made a poll a little while ago, about why people play the game and was thrilled to see how many of you polled and had comments to say. So I thought I’d make another.
This time, I was curious how big people’s armies are. Do you collect enough for 1 list? Or do you collect enough to swap in other units sometimes?
For me, I always want a big enough collection to swap around units in different games for lolz, but I always end up spending all my money on other armies lol.
Thanks
EDIT: For clarity, what is your ideal/average army collection size?

I put Other because it varies a lot from army to army. Stormcast and Ogors I have 3k+ points each with multiple builds in mind. Then I have a Troggoth army I planned out and collected to 2k that I dont intend to get more for unless point changes make the list invalid, or new Troggoths come along.
Basically depends whether it's a main army, or a conceptually more rigid project.

What is a medium/small/large army?
I have just over 2000pts of Spiderfangs, and 1000pts of Bonereapers.
I usually collect just enough to play a single list.
|
Wolfspear's 2k
Harlequins 2k
Chaos Knights 2k
Spiderfangs 2k
Ossiarch Bonereapers 1k |

Yeah it’s probably a bit too vague. I should’ve put something like 2k/1.5k/1k.
EDIT: edited poll for clarity.

My ideal is 3k pts +.
1) I like having options play-wise. Otherwise it'd get pretty boring.
2) Well, I guess since GW (and others) insists on continuing to make new models I like....
When I look at my collection though? It really splits into two categories. Forces I built in the WHFB days & new forces I've built here in Sigmar.
WHFB era forces: Dwarves, High Elves, Wood Elves, Dark elves, Orcs/Goblins (99% goblins), Beastmen, Empire/Dogs of War, Tomb Kings, Undead who aren't Tomb Kings....Khorne Demons, Skaven, Chaos Warriors (really just a hodge podge of stuff vs a proper army). With the exception of my Dark Elves, all easily exceed 3k pts. Some by magnitudes. And new Sigmar stuff can be added to them.
Those Dark Elves though? They barely break 2k pts - because I bought this one already painted & have never been able to match the paint job to my satisfaction.
Sigmar era forces: Most of these top out under 2k.
Sigmar specific forces =
Fyre Slayers (small PtG force),
DoK (small PtG force),
Bone Reapers (1500 pts aquired cheap from a guy leaving AoS - it's a semi-functional core, but I'll definitely need to add to it),
Karodan Overlords (really just a modeling project. I built a few cool boats - and added the min. to call it an army),
Sylvanth (about 1k, built for a narrative battle/demo),
Slaves to Chaos (2k pts, all Marauder based. built for an upcoming narrative battle/demo),
Sons of Behamet (2k pts of GW stuff. 4-5k pts if I add other companies giants I own - GW isn't the only company making giants, and they don't even make the coolest looking ones either - just the most expensive....)
Lumineth (3k pts. I had 1500 pts from last year. Then they released the second wave.... and I predict I'll end up adding 3k more pts as fire & water temples are released.

Up until last summer I had 18 fully painted 3000-5000 point armies (both 40k and fantasy).
I sold, threw away, or donated all but my tomb kings and chaos dwarves.

Seraphon 2.3k(3rd ed), khorne 2.4k, slaves to darkness 4k(and these slot into khorne). For tzeentch had over 2k aos2 and bunch slaanesh. Back to 3rd gits 3.4k, lumineth 5.1k, fec 6k, ogor around 5k.
Haven't counted 3rd ed for sce yet either. Aos2 had about 8k
Edit: did count and 8.7k sce though will increase a lot with battletome point increases.

I've got a fair few fantasy factions fully painted, and more waiting to be painted. I tend toward more armies rather than one huge army, though I have a soft spot for Orcs in all settings.
I've got:
- Common Orcs and Goblins
- Night Goblins
- Dwarves
- Undead (Vampires, Zombies, Skeletons, Ghouls)
all fully painted up as armies.
Working on Wood Elves and Stormcast.

Thanks to Mortal Realms I have two small Stormcast and Nighthaunt armies at roughly 1000 points each.
Ideally I like to keep it between 500 and 1000 points for games, which is in contrast with 40K for which we go no higher than 500 points.

Interesting idea for a thread - I'd quite like to know if there are many people with, say, 5k+ - I suspect there are but maybe that's more of a 40k thing.
I tend to buy to paint, and although I'd like to have a playable army it's just never high up enough on my priority list to happen. I have 1.5k of Slaves to Darkness, and about 800 points of Soulblight. (Painted)

I guess in 40k you get more stuff to change out as units are flexible in size and armament, whereas in AoS we got fixed unit sizes (or multiples thereof) and less options.

Sce, lumineth, fec and ogors break 5k for me. as slaves to darkness can be used in god specific khorne, tzeentch and slaanesh can field 5k as well.
I don't play with same army lists so i tend to run variety of models. Tournament's worst part for me is 3 games in row with same list!
I have aos models total, excluding most endless spells and some faction terrains. 354 are unpainted. Most in slaanesh and stormcast(whick are 200 or so models. And i can and did field 6k painted in one game!) My fully painted army is seraphon...but that is literally 9 models

CoS - Since alot of my "good" armies from WHFB - Dwarves, Empire, High/Dark/Wood Elves - have been lumped into Cities (even accounting for what my Elves lost) I can do 10's of thousands of points worth of CoS....
BoC - in excess of 6k or 7k. I can do 3k+ of Gors/Ungors/chariots & an equal amount of Bulls. Plus monsters - Chimera/Cockitrice/etc
Goblins - If I empty the cases I'm sure I could do 5k worth.
Undead - Oh yeah, if I pool my LoN/Soulbligh + alot of my Tomb King stuff I can pass 5k.
Chaos demons (Khorne) - easily.
Sons of Behemet - Easily - especially as I have many very cool giants of the right sizes from numerous other companies.
And this s before GW screws around with jacking up the points in the coming edition.

I haven't played in ten years so nowadays I just purchase models that I like without thinking too much if they are playable.
If I return to actual army collecting and playing some day, my approach would be similar to what I had back in the day. Buy models that I like and make an army list using the models that I own. If bigger army list is needed, buy more models. As a collectors I would like to buy at least one each unit before buying duplicates of anything except battleline units.
I don't how many points my old WHFB armies are. I guess they are somewhere around 3000 pts which happens by itself by including bit of everything. While large armies (by model count, not points) are impressing, I have have no personal interest to paint hundreds of the same model. I would rather paint 25 swordsmen, 25 spearmen and 25 halberdiers than 50 of any of them.

I have 2 forces, having sold my DoK since they sort of weren't doing anything for me.
My Seraphon are now around to 4k mark and just keep growing as I add units over time.
My Soulblights are my newest force and probably now a painting project to make look as good as possible. Currently sat at 2k but that may grow as I add units I like - I keep looking at Legion of the Night (making my Battlelines Grave Guard and two units of 20 skeletons) but think Legion of Blood straight up works better for a Deathrattle heavy, Cairns Krell-Kemmler themed army...

1.5k of Soulblight Gravelords. Plus 180pts of Nighthaunts. But then again I started AoS in February. In 40k I have 3 to 5 armies depending how you count. Over 6k chaos and something like 4k Tyranids and CSC.
I like my armies to have some variety for 2k games but usually I get bored after that. Somehow I always find myself collecting horde armies and after painting 60 neophytes or 40 skeletons I start to have ideas about something different.
Next I'm planning to add some FEC as allies, double the amount of Grave guard etc. Maybe stick to Death so technically I would have only one army.

I have large armies of Nighthaunts, Maggotkin, Blades of Khorne, Overlords and Ogors. Plus enough old school minis to put together a sizeable Cities of Sigmar list. Now I'm kicking off a soon to be large army of Slaves to Darkness.
