We all know when it comes to horror flicks that nothing is scarier than a spooky white woman that tells you it's time to put away your garbage cans from the sidewalk.

So I came across this thinking this was a parody, but apparently this is legit? I don't know how this movie got past the writing stage and who the intended audience for this movie is to be honest. Feels like a really bad attempt to cash in on the polarization of stuff that's been going on, it's definitely not going to age well. Morbidly curious to see if this will end up in the "so bad its good" category due to how bad the acting seems to be.

Huh... I didn't realise being a racist was a key component of being a Karen.

I guess that's another word that no longer going to mean anything...

I don't think this movie will age well.
I am not at all surprised this was signed off though.

Its a BET film.... yknow... Black Entertainment Television? Its absolutely a legit film, the intended audience are people who actually live this gak on a daily basis (ok, a less exaggerated/hyperbolic version of this gak).

Personally, I think your reaction to this says more about you than it does about the film.

Looks like the latest in the long history of 'black folks moves into affluent neighborhood and become harassed constantly by a racist neighbor' but with a very trendy title tacked on.

And if I were to level a complaint against them, it's that they're all basically the same movie. Even Lakeview Terrace which tried to invert the concept of young white folks getting harassed by grouchy black cop...Actually no that one did kind of age poorly didn't it? Inverting the formula is all well and good, but man that one kind of just looks a bit cringy on the premise alone in an odd sort of way. Sam Jackson was in it though, and fit his role pretty well XD

It's an exploitation film. Nothing new to see here. The funny part is that calling the movie 'Karen' is literally the smartest marketing move because we're talking about it now, aren't we? Good production values. Okay looking cast. Timeless premise. The movie would have done just fine under any name but 'Karen' is gonna market itself!

Those corporate bastards. They got us XD

Having dealt with an HOA, the trash can scene made me really uncomfortable. I was hoping before I’d clicked the trailer that it would be a little more silly and a little less…ripped from the headlines. Looks too depressingly plausible to enjoy.

The name is brilliant marketing for sure.

I actually think the initial premise of an extremely nosey and oppressive 'karen' neightbor would make an entertaining film. That first scene with the trash can kind of hooked me, but then the cop conspiracy came up and stuff and it lost me. Felt like a bit too much, not in any sort of realism sense but in the 'why would Karen need to be so petty if she's got cops in her back pocket?' Felt less like making a film on a trendy premise and more like checking off a list. I'm definitely not the target audience though.

I view that as a compromise with the seed for story structure. There’ve been enough news stories that follow a similar enough pattern that we all get it: Karen picks a fight with a person of color, Karen calls the cops and misrepresents the situation, expressing an expectation of bias from the police to threaten her victim, combine this with high profile stories of police reacting aggressively to people of color, you get a complete little horror-tragedy. But it’s linear and narratively unsatisfying, so throw in some shady connection between Karen and bad cop to build a three act story. It’s the same reason why most “based on a true story” movies end up hokey.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
But I now have to wonder why there aren’t more HOA based movies.

Yeah I guess that makes sense.

Narratively unsatisfying perfectly encapsulates my general reaction to these kinds of films too XD Doubly so. I'm both not the intended audience, and unimpressed by cashing in on something news worthy. Reminds me of the Slenderman movie that came years too late to be hip.

It's probably because I live in a metropolitan part of Canada that this comes off as contrived to me, given that in my area very few people would be so upfront rude to you moving into a neighborhood and that this is the premise rather than a subplot of an entire movie seems like a stretch. Definitely agree that it was smart to capitalize on the proliferation of "Karen" in social media to garner attention though, probably wouldn't have noticed the movie otherwise.

If this movie was a horror comedy parody like Shaun of the Dead it'd actually be good. Sadly they went the totally serious route.

As someone with 2 Karen family members they can be of both political leanings and still obnoxious but neither of my 2 Karen family members are racist. Ofc bigotry means anything these days and then they portray it in the movies as if white right wing people are evil KKK members. Same demonizing without asking why or talking with them to find out what they really think.

Definitely have to say this is the most iconic Karen move. The trailer seems to have her threaten that while the couple is in a restaurant, but I'm not sure it's really the same thing when you're not badgering staff with unreasonable requests and then demanding to see the manager when they quite understandably refuse. I'm not really sure at what point Karen expanded from an unpleasant customer who acts entitled and haughty to just a general concept of an unpleasant and entitled person, but how can you name a movie Karen and not have the the thing that made the meme?

I guess I will never know.
Happy for someone to PM me once they watch it and let me know if Karen in the movie lives up to the meme.
Until then I will keep enjoying my karens on youtubes

It is sad it seems the word could be getting warped like many other to soon describe absolutely anyone somebody disagrees with..

It's quite similar to how the word simp went from people who paid for stuff like OnlyFans to anybody who supports a woman online or otherwise.

Over time it gets misused repeatedly to the point that its original meaning gets changed due to the common usage. I mean it says something when literally started being used as the opposite of what literal is, to the point where its been added to the dictionary now

@grimskul: To be fair didn't a Flintstones commercial about cigarettes cause the word "like" in place of the word "as" cause an entire gak storm that ended in a successful ad that also changed the word "like" to mean "as" in the dictionary too?

@argive: At this point Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr could disappear tomorrow and I'd barely care. I'd actually probably be happier. Sometimes reddit is ok but i think social media was a mistake. In fact large portions of the internet were probably a mistake. It's like being connected to everybody at once and realizing theyre all jerks.

Geez, I never realized they even had an ad for cigarettes that far back, I was definitely not in the generation that grew up with that, so that was quite the eye-opening surprise for me. I guess that's the power of media for you.

I hadn't even come across the word 'simp' until it had already descended into something I couldn't even define. It seemed to simply disparage men for being pleasant and treating women like people, as if somehow the grave sin of engaging another human being with respect made them less manly XD Which is kind of what I'd expect from the bowls of the internet, to be fair.

Yeah, and that devolvement happened in an incredibly short time frame as well, like it was barely a few weeks before it got spammed everywhere in chats when it came to any kind of girl streamer or public figure that had fans of some sort. Probably didn't help that it came out around peak pandemic which meant everyone had too much time to spend online at home.

To my understanding It originally described incel (involuntary celibate) lonely men giving money(lot of money) to attractive e-girls they are romantically interested in who are doing soft core cam stuff(on various sites like twitch only fans and other adult ones), in the hopes of maybe impressing them enough to the point they would reciprocate(they never do...and they always have boyfriends).
None is really sure why people do this because it makes no sense to the average person... Like you could just watch any of the free prawn sites.

Its really sad how thirsty some of these men are, and how many there are. Its a lucrative business it seems. Why not sort their life out and try to find love in their real life they would go into debt to pursue this imaginary "relationship"? Don't know but seems unhealthy.

Then the term seemed to have been hijacked to describe anyone who would back up a woman on anything they might disagree with or simply be a fan of someone.

Unfortunately, I think it has to a lot with the parasocial aspect of modern social media and why it attracts a certain subset of men who get that dopamine rush when they get acknowledged on stream by a "pretty girl" when they donate money. It's kind of the same mentality you get with stans/fans of idol groups where they get possessive over their perceived image of purity, except in the case of these types of girls its moreso on receiving lewdness and a fake sense of connection. I think that's probably why even though you got the free pron stuff on the interwebz there's still guys who go for the more interactive (and more expensive) option. It's certainly unhealthy and the pandemic certainly exacerbated it with the lockdowns prohibiting regular social outings/events.

I forget what the full abbreviation means but it's more about the so called twitch thot fans with a sub to their only fans. Which is basically softcore adult entertainment for any halfway decent looking girl that's willing to show or do anything for cash.

Simps are dudes that shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars and in one case a dude went homeless just to support his favorite female twitch streamer. No I'm not kidding. Look it up. Basically there's a difference between supporting women and emptying out your wallet and self respect so they can thank you for about 10 seconds.

Sadly these are lonely dudes that need a real life girlfriend and go for a fake internet gf that barely cares they exist. It's unhealthy.

-----

Btw be honest. If simps were called "nice guys" everybody would give them crap without mercy. In some ways it's a similar mentality.

I believe the homeless story was debunked. I remember reading about it.
The guy in the chat reached out to some youtubers and said it was him and he was joking. But still donated a heck lot of money.

On the one hand im like its your money so what do i care how you spend it..
But on the other its clear something is seriously wrong. Like substance abuse or gaming addictions.

This has drifted way off topic haha

I think the park bird watcher story is where Karen started to pick up the frequently racist aspect to it as well. Then the stream of similar stories that followed cemented it.

TBH I get 'simps', or more specifically the guys that send all that money. I guess because their situation hits so close to home it's scary.

The rush of a pretty girl acknowledging you/being made happy by you is indescribable, and it's something you don't get anywhere else.

I don't do it, but I feel like it's something that could easily draw me in such I go out of my way to avoid it, so very much similar to drugs.

The term simp still seems to be used fairly close to it's original intention, even if it's often used ironically.
Karen seems to have moved quite far though, it seems to be used to refer to any woman you dislike for any reason now.
