I don't happen to have the new core rulebook on me, but I've seen a couple of new battle reports that have had faction specific terrain and were destroyed by a monster that is within 3" of it on a 3+. I understand that these terrain pieces are free, but does it seem rather too easy for an opponent to destroy them?

Well you aren't charging that monster into anything else then.

And it's free bonus. With some factions having WAY better(lumineth: good. Gloomspite: good, fec: 1 CP, lizards: Meh and sometimes even DETRIMENTAL) so if they are free and no way whatsoever to remove them then armies aren't even. Well they aren't even now.

Yeah I need to play with the rules myself to be totally happy with it, but in theory I think its fine.

Its easy for the opponent to do... if they have monsters they can easily get in range to use it. Which for some armies is easier said than done, especially if you as the defender are placing models to make it more difficult.

I like that it adds a new dimension to tactics people might use when up against strong faction terrain.

I think it is fantastic that 3rd provides widely available counter-play to faction terrain. And it was free to begin with on top of complete sets of allegiance abilities, so hardly crippling.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.
