Yes the title very much says it all, and whilst some might argue that the switch is a bit old for a big dedicated thread, I'd say its the best time to have one now that its got a huge library of games and accessories and has already had one revised design (new battery) released to the market as well as the dedicated handheld lite version.

So come one come all lets share what games we've found great on the switch, our best levels; what we've done; accessories and everything!

And yes this thread might well be sparked by the fact that I just got a Switch and, so far, only have one game - Diablo 3 - which I'm tearing through like a mage tearing through the demons of hell with a magical laserbeam!

Gunman Clive 1 and 2 are likely some of the best platformers on the Switch today.

Torchlight 2 has been eating up my time on it, as the port from PC is very well considered.

Mutant League Football is a great sports game with a cool theme.

We have two Switches in our house and more games that I can count or name. But those are ones I’ve sunk a lot of time into or beaten them.

The Switch is awesome due to its hybrid nature and plethora of cheap Indy games.

I've always been a fan of Nintendo portables and got a lot of run out of the DS & 3DS. Always had a lot of fun with the dungeon delving in the Etrian Odyssey series.

The Switch is a great system that blends handheld and portable. It was a great system to have on deployment and I found myself gravitating towards games that could be enjoyed in a small segments.

For me those two were Octopath Traveller and Dead Cells.

Octopath is a Square Enix sprite RPG, it doesn't have a grand plot or story like Final Fantasy, instead it's a lot of small vignettes which makes it perfect for playing in small chunks. Gameplay and story are a slow start but really started to hook after I started hitting the chapter 2 vignettes for each character.

Dead Cells is a fun, fast and fluid rogue-like. A friend of mine introduced me to it. I didn't like it at first, but I gave it a try and it was a fun 30 minutes a day kind of game where I'd improve over time. It's pretty brutal when you're first learning how to play but after you get the hang of it it flows really well. The weapons choices are pretty out there and you'll be hard pressed not to find one you like.

Game has gotten great post-release support so far and continues to get new content updates. The best one in my opinion allowed for a custom mode where you can turn off the weapons and items that you really hate using.

Highly recommend the two of them for good fun on short bursts.

Breath of the Wild should be mandatory for all switch owners, it's a great fun little RPG, almost every space is packed with a richness of detail that makes the world feel inhabited, and exploring it feels like a real adventure, but packs in enough RPG stuff - grinding for the GOOD gear, boss fights that make you sweat, puzzles that make me spit and froth at the mouth with fury how the feth are you meant to even do tha- oh, it was that, that's pretty simple, okay.

Smash is the best game ever made.

I had fun with Doom on the switch (never had it on any other platform, so it was my first time with it - pretty fun, but also a bit less challenging than I was hoping)

Currently trying to play Dark Souls only as much is as healthy, fantastic game, my build is a nightmare and I think good souls players would probably berate me for how all over the place I've been with it, but still, one of the most fun games I've played in a while.

For people with Switches, anyone got any thoughts on the Pokemon titles, or any FPSes?

Pokemon Snap is pretty great. Short, but fun to mess around with and replay to find different behaviors.

Sword and Shield are solid entries. A good step towards modernizing things, but maybe not quite the full leap forward they need. They're very good, but still essentially the same gave they've always been.

I usually purchase Nintendo consoles for the Metroid series but the Switch Lite is too expensive to entertain at £200. Then the games are about £45 on release...

I really like the look of snap, but the price tag puts me off too much. I've kinda been sitting on it, and hoping I can find the game for cheap 2nd hand, or just waiting for the hype to die down, so the price will follow but nonetheless it looks very pretty and chill.

What do you think they need to modernize? I'm pretty unapologetically a GEEWUNNER, though I've really been dying to scratch the 1st-3rd gen itch I've been experiencing recently, which brought me really close to picking up one of the Let's Go series, but hearing that they've made the games easier puts me off too much. I know it's essentially a kids' game, but I do like the little sting of challenge, and being surprised when an opponent does something unexpected, or RNGesus doesn't go your way.

Impulse bought Katamari Damacy Encore at the weekend, and was mega-hooked. The 2 player mode is really fun, but DAMN. For a game as old as it is, it's utterly brilliantly made. Love all the detail and care crammed in, even if I don't think I'm emotionally strong enough to try level 7 again after all the verbal abuse from space dad when I couldn't get my Katamari big enough...

In some ways, they've probably done a lot more than I realize and I'm just kind of out on what is a pretty standard level of grind for modern videogames, but at some point I just kind of got put off by the nature of the franchise in any kind of competitive setting. I just kind of want to grow my favorites, but there's so much RNG on the backend that the reality is anything you catch and play through the game normally with was likely born bad and can never compete and that.... sucks.

I've also admittedly not chased the meta since.... well, I started chasing the meta in tabletop games honestly, but I was part of the Smogon crew in the early days and just never gelled with either what Gamefreak was doing or Smogon's restrictions. Stuff like Stealth Rock invalidating several types that were already kind of bad mixed with an online community that was extremely ban happy, but had no issue letting Tyranitar dominate the franchise for decades.... I just find myself enjoying neither side of the competitive coin and the single player content just hasn't changed in nearly 25 years. It's great, but I've played it SO many times.

Ultimately, Pokemon Go scratches my itch for the franchise. It's started to push a little too much towards the hardcore for me too, but at its core I can just collect critters and raise my favorites. Probably not good enough for competitive battles but they're not all that much of the experience either and its easy enough to be more than good enough for raids and taking down NPCs.

I think one thing that stands out to me with Pokemon is that the AI in their games is purely random. It will do strange things each turn without any basic attempt at tactics. Even casting things like sleep twice in a row or such. Basically doing moves that offer it zero gain and could easily be coded in to check enemy status and not repeat a move that has no effect etc..

Granted part of that is its aimed at kids and that its aimed at allowing you to win fight after right without having to heal up.

Personally I'd actually change that so that you'd heal after every fight, which would make it much easier to have tougher, more challenging battles because at the end you'd be restored and would move onto the next.

I think one thing is that Pokemon remains a childs game that has a huge adult following, but doesn't really seem to cater to the adult market as a separate market.

I have some games on my Switch that I have on my PC like Dark Souls and Skyrim, and I really enjoy them (even though I wish I could mod skyrim).

Breath of the Wild is a lot of fun, and definitely well worth playing.

Hades is really fun too, and surprisingly deep.

But my best experience has been Hollow Knight, which I absolutely adored and played the hell out of. And it was really cheap too!

I have some older games like some of the CRPGs, Divinity, and some Final Fantasy games that I'm looking forward to playing at some stage.

I've just discovered that Torchlight 2 is on the Switch (3 is also on there but we don't talk about Dungeon Siege 3/Sacred 3/Torchlight 3*). And honestly it looks darn good on it - mucked around a little in the demo. A great example of a game not made for portable and yet its visual style seems to really work well with it

*Freaking heck even Diablo 3 only survived on the skin of its teeth from being a disaster!

I have Diablo 3 for the Switch but I gotta say all the constant scripted exposition from everyone put me off playing it.

I think the only thing I dislike is that its clearly built like an MMO in that it is ground up made to be repeated in fast succession. Similar to issues I have with Starcraft 2, you can really feel that bliz's development team have been heavily influenced by their work on WOW.

It produces a very different experience compared to playing something like Diablo 2.

I still enjoy it greatly and its well made, its just very different. I do love the fast swapping of abilities on the fly whilst locking them in on certain spots (challenges/bosses and such). Respeck options always feel a bit like a cop-out in games like Torchlight 2 or Grim Dawn; whilst in games like Diablo 2 the issue is that you have to build in a specific way toward specific tactics and after a while that can get dull; so you either have ot character hop or start again. Which is a pain if what you want is late game stuff to change around rather than early game.

So been mucking around with my switch more!

Digimon Cyber Sleuth is strange! The actual digimon side is pretty standard if you've played any before. Battle to gain experience to level up and evolve into new forms; each time you evolve you gain additional levels and abilities and some monsters require you to level and evolve up, then de-evolve back to gain more levels and ability scores to then evolve into more powerful forms.

The 3D animation on the switch itself is very good for the console and nicely done

However the game doesn't seem to actually want you to play that side of it. Instead its got this whole "investigation side" which, whlist I like story in games, feels like they've overdone it a bit. There's a lot of basically long talking segments and then running around before coming back for a debrief. Some neat ideas don't get me wrong, its just it feels like the balance of combat and gaming VS talking/reading and quests that have 0 combat just feel a touch "off."

Interestingly I decided to change the difficulty and my gods that's a harsh slide. From normal to hard it really did shift into hard; though it mostly feels like the enemy gets a health and damage boost. Bosses have a huge health boost that on its own makes the game shift from "this is easy breezing along with no challenge" to "I've just run out of restores and I'm down to my last 2 monsters". Granted this might just mean the hard is more grindy

It's good fun overall.

Brigandine is another I've been messing with and is apparently a really old console game brought back to life. It's got some very nice artwork and some neat bits of story in what is basically an open ended turn based wargame. There's multiple factions on a single map and you take over one; then you've got to beat all the others. You command settlements where you send your adventurers out on quests (mostly item/experience fetch per game turn); or send them in to invade other castles which brings you into a turn based battle with up to 3 leaders and their associated monster force.
Monsters are a neat twist as you summon them out of the battle and can level them up and give them equipment; but if your army loses your leader units survive and just flee to another castle; whilst your monsters die. Clearly preserving the monsters (ergo the army) and levelling them up is important. It's simple but there's a nice depth to the strategy once yo uget the hang of it.

Been Around the Block

I got a switch about a year and a half back as a Christmas present along with Smash Bros. It was something I was super keen for (an avid fanatic since the N64 version) but didn't end up playing it a whole lot.

We got a lot of mileage out of the Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening remake. My daughter is OBSESSED. At 5 years old she struggled with the first dungeon for weeks on end, but overtook me and finished the game about a month ago (about a year later). So many tears and tantrums and begging me to do the "hard bits" for her but she got through it (with a bit of help here and there).

Now she's on to Animal Crossing. The gameplay loop is OK and she loves the multiplayer. My wife and I have houses on the island too but we barely get a look in. I feel it may have run it's course already though. I've dabbled in it and found it surprisingly shallow. Aside from playing with her uncle (who has his own Switch and plays Animal Crossing as well) she's gone off it.

We've played a lot of games as a family. Overcooked, Mario Party and Lego Worlds are favourites but we've got a fair few hours in other Mario games and Just Dance racked up too.

I dabbled in Warframe for a while but hit a point I couldn't be bothered grinding through. I felt like a lot of the content was out of reach because I hadn't hit the point my character was powerful enough to be reliably successful and the grind was too much.

I played a lot of Dauntless and really liked it... right up until the "Reforged" patch. I don't know why, it ticked all the boxes of stuff I thought I wanted, but I just didn't enjoy it as much. Things might have changed, it's been a few months since I logged in but I don't really have the inclination right now.

I've also played through the campaigns in Jurassic World Evolution. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The building is too restrictive and the dinosaurs are either too predictable or too much of a pain in the arse, so I end up using the same combinations over and over. I found it also had a LOT of performance issues. I like dinosaurs, so I still fire it up every so often just to check out the models, but other than that I'm pretty much done with this game.

I'm really after something I can just play and chill with right now. I'd love something like Astroneer on Switch. I saw that Slime Rancher has been ported over and I'm tempted to pick it up but it will be a while before I buy anything new.

If you like Devil May Cry and Anime, then Astral Chain is a must play for you.

Story is a bit weak and the final boss is BS², but the combat is so much fun.

If you like games like DMC, Astral Chain, and Bayonetta there is a new game on Switch called Ultra Age. It was made by four university friends who decided to make a video game so while not a development team as small as Falconeer (just one guy) it is still only a tiny development team.

Nintendo Direct on the 23rd. Looks like it's going to be mostly a games showcase.

While I wouldn't get anyone's hopes up for N64/Game Boy games on the online service, apparently we're supposed to be getting a few additions to the online libraries too. Crossing my fingers for Earthbound.

Well no Gameboy games online but there is N64 coming to it, though as an additional pay-for service. You can also order a $50 wireless N64 controller for your Switch to play them.

The big surprise was Actraiser remake.

Thing is, they dont have the licences for the big sellers on n64, so it is a hate/love service.
If one played only nintendo games on the n64 then yes you get your value. if one was like me and only played non nintendo games, this offers nothing.

I really hope that this means we might not only see more N64 games but also perhaps gamecube ones too. There's a few good games on that console that I'd like to play again or even for the first time (eg Baiten Kaitos)

And yeah gameboy and gameboy advanced games would be fantastic to see. Heck I'd love to be able to play Dragon Warrior Monsters again (they've apparently remastered it once or twice but only in Japan)

I'm also sitting here stewing over if I want to get Diablo 2 on the Switch. On the one hand PC is bigger; but on the other I've honestly enjoyed playing D3 on the Switch (granted part of that is because I can actually play it whilst it won't run well on my PC due to the PC version having always online)

I think the big decision maker here is whether or not Rare games will get involved. Goldeneye is out due to expired licenses, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day would NOT be the game to include in a child-accessible service. That still however leaves Banjo Kazooie (plus sequel), Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, and Blast Corps. I think Killer Instinct was also a Rare title?

I’m hoping for the Mario Party games myself. A used copy of Mario Party 3 comes to about 70-ish dollars on a good day. Been hunting down a copy at a decent price for years.

Kind of weird that they would include Genesis games though, considering you can get an enormous collection for a flat fee.

Honestly though, Gameboy games don’t seem too unlikely if Nintendo is willing to throw N64 games into the service. Remember that the 3DS store was practically filled with those titles, including Gen 1/Gen 2 Pokemon.

Honestly I wish they'd just sell the games and hope that they might do that at some point. Account systems are fine but continual payments can be a pain. If you play 20 of the games its a great deal; if you only want to play one or two its less of a solid deal and in the end the game has to download and run machine side anyway.

It's incredibly cheap and tied to the online service anyway. Honestly, it would be hard to charge for without quickly being more expensive.

The Rare question is certainly interesting. Normally I'd say its unlikely, but Nintendo and Microsoft have been pretty good buddies lately.
