Hi there,
So, since I got a new job last year, I have had very little free time and I moved far away from home. I can't really go back to 40k, it's too time and space consuming and expensive to start again with a new edition.
So I got my interest for the side games renewed !
I already have several gangs of Necromunda, but I'm really not up to date.
What about Imperialis although ? The models look great, the books are the newest, I could see a few aircrafts on my desk as a side project during free time.
Would you recommend this game or is it better to wait for more to get release ?
Can one make a force without spending hundreds of euros and hours ? Does it play well ?
Thank you !

If you can take it how GW sees it, a casual lunch break game with bad support, then you wont be too disappointed.

One can argue if the gameplay is good or not, i would say that is a personal preference, but it is made towards simplicity.
Each 2p box set is basicly a stand alone game with plane expansions, and every physical product exept the planes and 2p box is limited run. Dices, stat cards, battleboards, book, are all limited run first come first server, no reprint. That is the realy big downside.

The 2nd downside is that this game uses a hex grid movment system, not inch moment, meaning you cannot play if you dont have a hex grid mat. There is a small paper one that comes in all 2p boxes, but the slightly bigger one in cardboard, is limited run allso. See the irony here? the game forces you to play on a hex grid system but the company that made the game dont sell hex grid boards on a permant basis................ (oh btw, they have never ever sold replacment bases for the planes, better not brake thouse that are included with the planes)
And then the plane expansions is split between GW and forge world, and FW is very expensive. Currently only imps, tau and orks, with space marines and eldar release prolly early winter.

Basicly they honestly want you to play with what is in the 2p boxset, nothing else. I kinda see 19`s AI as this decade`s Dreadfleet, fun now and then but if you play it for too long the issues becomes too hard to ignore.

But the models are shamefully good. Sutch nice kits to work on and paint.

Would i recommend it? No, not in the way GW treats the game. But then again it would only cost you the price of a 2p box to find out for you.
What i would recommend is that you buy the planes and use the original rules published by forgeworld back in 07.(i dont have a pdf link to them, but i am shure someone else here do)

It's easy enough to convert the game to a true minis game. Bases are 2" across and a standard size regardless of the model so each point of speed grants 2" of move. All turns are made in 60 degree increments and since the planes are mounted on a ball socket you can just rotate them to recenter the front to whatever turn side you need to make. The hardest part would be making sure the lines of movement are straight but by running a tape measure past the stem to do your moves it's close enough for friendly games. I honestly like it this way more than some of the card driven games where once the dogfight starts there's lots of picking up models and hoping they go back in the same spot.

It's a good beer and pretzels game. I haven't tried any of the ground attack or landing missions but the dog fights are fun.

Unfortunately I think GW screwed up a bit on this game in many ways. The 2p boxed sets come with less than what you want, but if you buy any of the squadron sets on top of the 2p boxed sets you end up with more of that aircraft than you are ever likely to field in one game. Then the 2p boxed sets come with enough rules to play with what's in the box, but if you want to expand you also need to buy the campaign books (which are currently only available digitally).

Then the rules, IMO they just oversimplified them. The game is a bit too shallow.

Then the lack of ongoing support, really the game should be played on a 4x4 or larger board, but GW only gives you a 2.5x2.5 board in the boxed set, and the ones they sold separately are 3x3 but they were only limited runs. Also the plastic ground support assets was only a limited release.

It seems like GW are trying to treat it like a series of board games, whilst it's actually bigger than that. My hope is after the next release (Eldar vs Space Marines) they consolidate the rules into a single book and release some of the necessary accessories as a separate package.

Whether you should buy it? Well, up to you, in spite of all its flaws I think it still can be a fun game, and if you play smaller battles you can get through several games in an afternoon, which can make it good for organising a group event or if you can't manage to organise games that take longer to play.

And the models are really excellent, they look good, they go to well nicely and are fun to paint.

Personally I've probably over invested in the game in terms of it being a game, but I'm half buying it just to collect the minis. If GW figured out a way to make it more competitive with the likes of X-wing that would be great.

Sad thing is, that "category" is taken by Wings of Glory.

AI could have been mutch more then what it currently is if GW saw it as a minis game equal to adeptus titanicus, not as a stand alone nybrid boardgame.
