At my LGS there is a group of us 40k players that is thinking about starting AOS and I am trying to decide what army I should start.

I want to focus on cavalry as I played Bretonnia back in the day and really liked setting up the large cavalry charges.

I think the preferred armies would either be Gravelords focusing on lots of Blood/Black knights, or a Chaos knights list. Is one of them better than the other for a full mounted army? I am mainly looking to keep the model count as low as possible as I play guard for 40k and really don't want to paint another 120 infantry models. Lol

Or, is there another army that does cavalry really well that I'm just completely overlooking?

Thanks

Not quite traditional cavalry, but Beastclaw Raiders (of Ogor Mawtribes) gives you Mournfang Riders and Thundertusk/Stonehorn riders, which are pretty neat "cavalry".

Other than that, most armies are pretty one note with their cavalry, with few options. Chaos having Marauder horsemen, knights, and varanguard at least gives them 3 classes of cavalry for diversity.

It is a bit uncertain with the new AoS3 rules.

Some armies had cavelery where you could boost their attacks trhough the roof (SE) but you can only use the same stratagem once each turn, so they do not work.

The new uit coherency rules makes a unit difficult once thet get more then 5 models.

Also, do you want an army with good cavalery units? Or cavalery that can move in and feth some gak up? Because those are two very different things. Some good utilaty units can be cavalery.

That beeing said good cavalery that I know of are blood knights. (Become a problem once you take 10 in a unit.)

Ogor Mournfangs are great, but they only come in a unit of 2 making it difficult with the new reinforcement rules, but not nessasseraly a problem as Ogor Beastclaw raiders can just go to town with monsters. (As a sidenote collecting this is potensiallyu very easy and very low model count. 3 boxes of start collecting ogors gives you 12 mournfang riders and 3 big monster. Each big monster comes as 2 monsters that can be vanilla, fight hero or priest. That are probably more models then you need. 15 is plenty for beastclaw raiders, as opposed to your 120 guards.)

I have heard that Oisiarch bonereapers have good cavalery. I also suspect that slave to darkness have some good chaos cavalery. I can not confirm this.

Kragnos is basicly a big horse. Perhaps go with him as a solo knight?

If you just want a small model army Sons of Behemot is a great army in 3rd edition. It is potensially only 4 models big. (Play the objective game. Do not focus on outfighting the opponent.)

Did you suddenly forget that you were replying to a post about wanting to play cavalry??

Stormcast can also do monster cavalry, and have chariots coming soon. Lumineth have a couple of options as well.

RP isn't really issue. You need beastclaw raider general so realistically frostlord on stonehorn. 430. In 2k list if you then take nothing BUT cavalry that gives you 18 mournfangs.

You don't want to go to 6 strong units(you lose 33% of your attacks in melee until somebody dies). So basically 4+4+4+4+2 which fits to RP limits.

Actually I have yet to build list I feel I would have even NEEDED 5th RP...Biggest difference has been no more tripling non-battleline or going for quad size(no more 40 ghouls etc). But mournfang never was particularly good for 6+ due to big bases and small reach and now coherency makes it issue I don't think RP's is much of a worry as you wouldn't be going to 6/8 sizes anyway even if you could.

Lumineth is okay...for shooty cavalry route. Dawnriders are more of delay/objective grabber being decent punch vs 1w horde infantry. And that's getting less common this edition. I wouldn't recommend lumineth as cavalry army though. Their cavalry is more support unit for specific role.

Ossiarch Bonereapers have some pretty awesome cavalry (and great sculpts).

My whole Gloomspite Gitz army is cavalry, as they are all mounted on spiders, and I think that's cool. Almost every battletome has an option for a pure-cavalry force, just depends what you like the look of.

Lumineth Realm Lords, and Stormcast have a lot of Cavalry options too.

What makes the Pssiarch Bonereapers good? I keep hearing people mention them.

Hedonites of Slaneesh. You have lots of demon/non demon choices. Good range cav, chariots. Things kinda cav like, ie; slangors, fiends.

Soulblight, the Blood Knights are fantastic can be built around and you can have directives as chaff.

Slaves to darkness with Chaos Knights, Maurauder Horsemen and Varangaurd an all cav list is very doable and decent on the table.

I was kinda said to see that cities of sigmar had removed all the various old WFB heavy cavlary from it though :(

Depends on what you want to paint and your play style. Want to play Death - go for a Kastellai Dynasty army and get 4 boxes of blood nights and 2 vampires on zombie dragons. Prefer to do more magic, then go Vyrkos and snag some wolves as support for the knights and get Belladama. If you like Chaos, then go Archaon and his Horsemen. Add knights and marauder horsemen as needed. You can run with Khorne if you want juggernauts. Like Destruction then you got options: ogors with multiple beast claw reader boxes. You get heavy cav and a big mean monster. Like Orcs, go for gore gruntas though hey work better with a mixed force. Order has multiple lists - storm caste has some fun monster cavalry and some fast cavalry. Just choose your chamber as it affects your battle line. Idoneth has eels, sharks, and a sea turtle. Cities has several but the old dark elves and high elves do it best as they have light, heavy, and chariots.

Well I think you can put togther a pretty good slaves calvary army.
A chaos lord on a damon mount and another on Karkadrak
Core of 4 knights, 1 chariot and 1 Varanguard
And a War Mammoth and soulgrinder. Fast movers with some shooting.
Switch generals each turn to summon a weak unit to hold objctives.
Give the army of a mark and there you go.

PS My now defunct army was a Tomb King Chariots/ushabti force

I have not played any AoS so not sure if this would work, maybe some of you can let me know.

Ironjaws

Megaboss on Mawkrusha
Fill the rest with Gore-gruntas

options of Second Mawkrusha

Fills the role of all Cavalry, plus I heard the Ironjaws Gore-Gruta Cavalry was decent and it seems the new FAQ has given the Heroes the ability to issue more orders.

Like I said, not sure how it would work.

Kasteli dynasty from SBGL army book would be quite thematic and low model count.

2xVampire lords on zombie dragons (one should be Prince Vhordrai) then Blood Knights and dire wolves as battle line and finish of with black knights and a wight Lord on skeletal steed

Nobody mentioned Idoneth. They have battleline eels that are very fast and dangerous. and In-built shooting protection turn 1 so they can get in. Then you can add even more cavalry riding sharks or turtles to taste.

Also recommending Slaves to Darkness. The Chaos Knights that come in the start collecting box are some of the coolest looking models I've ever seen and I can't recommend them enough. It also comes with a lord mounted on a big beastie who also looks great. Then there's the Varanguard, which are bigger even cooler Chaos Knights who cost nearly 100 points per model. Unfortunately they're also 100 bucks for a squad of three, which is ridiculous and I highly suggest you get them secondhand to avoid that price tag. Six varanguard is plenty to build a list around.

Bonesplitters can do pretty all mounted or nearly all mounted(they benefit from prophet and big boss on foot but I have won without them). Not best army out there but can do surprisingly well(and so far only army I have won with vs Be'lakors host in 2k game).

Not exactly in your face and smash them though. You need to focus on denying enemy from vp's. Straight up all charge army wide results in horrendous casualties.

But army that not many knows how to deal with. And can screw them big time with big first wave hitting them in their deployment zone t1 with 2nd wave hanging back.

And only army I have managed to be in 11-0 lead after 2 battle rounds (albeit around 4th battle round I was nearly spent and come t5 I had 3 models with 5 wounds in total...but won 21-15)
