I seem to do this every edition but I now have enough plastic to fill a fairly large storage box and need to paint it, get it on a table and use it in anger. Well, maybe not anger but certainly against another army.

Rooting about in the back of the loft I found the last two starter sets - Dark Imperium and Indomitus and a couple of Dark Angels Primaris Upgrade sprues. I wasn't a fan of the Primaris at first but they have grown on me to the point where the old marines look less acceptable than they used to. So after toddling down to GW for a DA codex and then toddling back for a Space Marine codex I am in a position to start painting up an army.

This is my test piece, a mixture of drybrushing and edge highlighting that I think works OK and is relatively quick to do. I may add some dry grass tufts when I get hold of some but I want to keep the basing fairly neutral. Sergeant next.

Thanks chaps, after a year of grinding out 15mm ancient Romans this project feels like a holiday.

Finally got around to finishing the rest of the unit. These were originally painted badly as Ultramarines and spent a few days in the dettol before having new DA pauldrons fitted and getting a nice dark green livery.

I am planning to use half the box of multipose intercessors as auto bolt rifle and the other half as stalker bolt rifle. This leaves the bucketloads of monopose intercessors as standard bolt rifle armed squads. I'll be adding a few Ravenwing as well for fun. Might do an outrider next for a laugh.

Theses guys look great zenbadger, the drybrushing and edge highlighting work well together. Will the outrider be getting similar treatment? I also hope you fashion some mashed potato theme in to them somehow!

Cheers Gobert, they are in fact all based using my super glue and dry Smash technique...it just looks like sand and gravel.

I did some desert bases recently and it made darker figures really pop, so I can see the alcohol infused sense it in

Are you going to apply dust to their feet , or keep them nice and fresh as if they just stepped out of the landing craft?

Depends how much alcohol is consumed before dry brushing...

Great looking start to an army, mate. Green is deep and rich and the red guns are classic 40k all over. Excited to see the new bases!

First Outrider is done with Ravenwing upgrade bits. Took a while to get the black right and it still needs a coat of satin varnish to even the finish out a bit but to all intents and purposes its done. Apart from some tufts and flock when I get hold of some thing suitable. And I have just seen some dodgy brushwork on the knee and...

That black is looking great already. Those are some very neat edge lines.

Not much of an update as I haven't finished anything yet but I have been experimenting with different ways of painting faces this morning. So far this is my favourite, hot pink base (Emperors Children) washed with navy blue (Drakenhof Nightshade + Contrast Medium) and then layered up with pale flesh (Kislev Flesh) and cream highlights (Pallid Wytch Flesh). Not big enough to focus on properly but you get the gist of it.

Makes an interesting change from my usual Bugmans Glow/Cadian Fleshtone/Kislev Flesh triad.

Thanks, I have kind of got lazy as a painter and I have been looking at 50s and 60s pulp cover art for inspiration.

Nice work on Clamorem, I think the hot pink combined with the black really helps to draw focus to his face. Nice use of Ravenwing bits too

Thanks Gobert.

Today's finished model is a test paint for Necrons. I painted these using the Cryptek Armourshade over Stormhost silver before but they looked like well roast chicken. This time I have used Iron Hands Steel and Reikland Fleshshade to give a more subtle bronze effect. Happier with it than before.

Really nice green. I am impressed that you did that with dry brushing. When I have tried dry brushing on marines, it always looks too chalky. Your green came out really nice.
