I don't play D&D, but I really like looking at all of the monsters and creatures from the game. So I bought the Monster Manual a while ago, this (5th?) edition:

Is this a whole lot different from let's say the 4th or 3rd edition?
Also, what other monster books are out there from other RPG's, board games etc?

I already have some Warhammer codex's and the "Enchanted World" series from Time Life.

Monster Manuals are pretty great for inspiration. I have the whole set of "pocket" version of pathfinders.

There are some downsides though. The longer the series goes and the more books come out the more likely you are to get "A Bear, but Ice!" "A giant, but this one isn't dumb!" "Goblins, but orange and from the jungle!" or "All these creatures exist on entirely different planes of existence and have almost zero use in any campaign you are ever likely to run!"

That being said, I love a game with some tables for generating monsters instead. The core game box for Forbidden Lands has 2. One for monsters and one for demons. Or really, just 2 for making monsters and then call them whatever you want. They are pretty thorough and expansive. Some of the best I have ever seen.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

A lot of other Dungeons and Dragons monster manuals are gonna have a lot of the same monsters as the 5e one. So if you're not playing D&D probably not worth it.

I like the Monsternomicon books from the 3e Iron Kingdoms RPG, which has Iron Kingdoms versions of lots of monsters.

The 1st and A D and D monster Manuals, and Deities and Demigods.

Then there was Bulfinch's mythology, Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu, the newer Iron Kingdomes, and Warhammers Realms of Chaos, Lost and the Damned, Orks, and Waaagh!, "Er We Go! Freebooters.

Lately, I have been really liking the SCP stuff.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Sometimes its useful to go back to original sources. Quite a few D&D monsters go back a long way, though they're mixed right in with regular animals. The Roman logic on giraffes still amuses me greatly: Camelopardus (Camel leopards- they've got spots, so they're like leopards, and they look sort of like camels, yeah?)
