Hey guys.
I’ve just got back into painting, and decided to use my terminators from the Space Hulk set as the backdrop for a Flesh Tearers army, made up of a core of veterans supported by new primaris. The terminators turned out well, but when I came to varnish my assault intercessors they ended up super shiny!
So I’m not sure if there’s a fix? I used Army Builder Anti-Shine Matt varnish, but maybe I didn’t shake enough, or maybe I put it on too thick. Would another thin layer matte it down some?
Alternatively I could steer into the skid, do all the primaris shiny and new and contrast that with the veterans being more dull and damaged?

Stand the can in warm water for 5 minutes, then shake it until you can't feel your arm. Then shake the can even more.

Spray outside on a warm, dry day.

Short blasts rather than sustained spray.

Multiple thin coats rather than a single thick one.

From a distance rather than three inches from the model.

Did I mention to keep shaking the can?

You can re-spray matt over gloss just fine. I tend to wait 24 hours for the glossy coat to dry.

Brush-on matt varnish also works, airbrushed matt varnish is great. Remember to shake those too...

The real solution is to go to live in America where you can still buy Testor's Dullcote, and breathe deeply of that lovely, matt spray (please don't).

first i have heard of a matt varnish produsing gloss varnish, you shure you took the right can?

in any case, matt varnish removes gloss shine.
I use monitorium(satin) and a micro burst removes all glossyness from my gloss varnish layer.

Yeah I only own Matte. It’s the brush on, not spray cans. Honestly all I can think is perhaps I put significantly too much on!

If it's the one in the semi-transparent bottle, you should be able to see the matting agent settle at the bottom over time, it'll be a chalky looking deposit at the bottom of the bottle. You need to shake until all of that is spread evenly through bottle and not just sitting on the bottom. If you use it without shaking, you miss out on the matting agent and essentially end up with gloss varnish, over time if you do it too much it'll throw off the concentration of matting agent and when you do finally shake it, you'll end up with something with too much matting agent and it'll make your models look hazy or frosty.

Usually if you apply too much matte varnish it'll look hazy more than glossy because the of all the matting agent, but I've not done a lot of experimenting so maybe you hit some critical point where it's so thick that it starts to look glossy again, but I don't think so.

Ive had this problem with army painter matt varnish. Its was a faulty or mislabeled batch. Might be the same in your case.

I've just moved to airbrush matt varnish now though. You dont need to worry about outdoor conditions causing clouding and such and its far more cost effective
