Hey guys - I seem to recall a rule, but it could be that I'm getting older and conflating older edition rules with 9th. Does it say anywhere that objects like banners and weapons don't count toward LOS? Or, if you can see a banner, you can shoot?

That is not in the current rules set.

Self confessed noob here, but the shooting rules say if a model can see another model, they can shoot at it.

HOWEVER - what's blocking their view?
If its a piece of obscuring terrain, then you need to be able to draw at least one base-to-base line for each firing model for them to be able to shoot.
If they can see a banner above a particularly densely designed set of tree area terrain, they can still shoot at it - applying whatever cover rules apply to said trees.

Am I wrong guys?

I remember what you're referring to, it used to be you couldn't target a model if you could only see an antenna for example. That's not currently in the rules which is a shame.

For pickup games I always ask my opponent if they're happy to play with the old rule since I've never liked seeing a unit get shot to bits because the tip of its sword is visible.

That rule is not part of 9th. It wasn't part of 8th either. Line of sight is from any part of one model to any part of another.

What nos said. If you can see any part of the model with any part of yours, you can shoot it. It's ridiculous, but thems the rules.

It's no less ridiculous than a bolt round blowing apart a guardsman at 24" but disappearing at 24.1"

The game is full of abstractions and this is removing one. It also makes some sense - if you can see a banner sticking up over some trees you can take a good guess there's some enemy in the woods, and firing into trees with laser beams miniRPG and freaking vortex projectors shouldn't be too safe for the people in there...

Thanks guys - if I recall, it was a rule as far back as 5th edition. But appreciate the clarity.

I would add though that every player I have games against has taken this with a pinch of salt.

If i could only see the barrel of a gun or the tip of a flag, i would not claim that as having LOS.
