Made an account to moan:

It looks like they've discontinued the easy build cadians! I cant find them on the store and an email from GW support (although vague) seems to confirm this. This means Astra Militarum standard infantry are now £0.73 per point? (£29 for 40pts) That's more than doubled! The easy build cadians worked out at £0.3 per point. (£6 for 20pts) Not great but less than half the new asking price.

As a comparison space marine infantry (intercessors) are only £0.18 per point! (£35 for 200pts)

Astra Militarum were always an expensive faction to collect, but this is huge!

ALL the 40k Easy to Build kits (Guardians, Boyz, Cultists, etc.) were discontinued a while ago - I think the Blight-hauler is the only exception.

Yeah but the Guardians are only at £0.31 per point (£25 for 80 pts) and boys are £0.25 per point (£22.50 for 88 pts) which isn't great, but the easy build cadians were the only way to bulk out the infantry section of Astra Militarum without re-mortgaging...

I mean, I could make my units out of playdoh and lollipop sticks and it wouldn't bother me. But that's not the point I'm trying to make here.

Imperial Guard is the easiest faction to find alternatives for, if you consider GWs miniatures too expensive. Take any historical miniatures you like.
Or make an armoured company, I guess the price per point is better on tanks?

just pulled 10 guardsman off my 3d printer this morning, resin and i woudl say as detailed as the gw normal kits moreso than the easy to build. cost less than a dollar in resin or less than .7 pounds. printed in one piece too would have been cheaper to support if i were not too lazy to break them down or print in pieces.

In all seriousness, it's sad but not unexpected to see them go. With the new Tanith hero-kit and the rumours of plastic Kriegers, the only thing keeping me from expecting them to sunset the Cadian kits entirely is the fact that they just added that upgrade sprue. Can't say I'm entirely enthused with the direction GW is going here - seems like more sidegrades and "one step forward, one step back".

Back in around 2010 they stealth doubled the price of all the LotR kits and the Dire Avengers kit for 40k by halving the number of sprues without changing the price of the box. Price hikes aren't new, even 100% price hikes, and they're not going anywhere else anytime soon.

When I started 40k the Cadians were 20 for £15. Crazy stuff and people will still defend it as "LALALALA IT'S JUST INFLATION LALALALALALA."

to be fair on inflation, my first apartment was in 2002 and 1 room in a 4bed for bath was $240, drove past the same building earlier this week and they are advertising 1 bedroom in a 4/4 for $700

my pickup (still own it but not main vehicle) a 98 frontier xe extended cab with a manual was $14k new msrp (think i paid $12.5k) a new stripped down frontier runs $27k and they do not come down off that (i just went to look at one and ultimately decided against purchasing)

of note i do not like gw's inflation being so high for plastic models but do understand some price creep

A price increase for the Guard - just as plastic Krieg are looking like a true possibility?

I'm shocked.

Anyone who saw the new guard upgrade sprues and didn't immediately realize that the price of guard models was about to go through the roof either hasn't been around GW for very long or hasn't been paying much attention to how they operate.

Oh I think everybody who wasn't a hardcore white knight in total denial expected it, but even someone as bitter and cynical as me didn't expect it to jump up to £29 RRP. The Brood Brothers kit includes a full Cadian set, GSC upgrades and a Heavy Weapon Team for £4 less.

Shhh. Delete that right now, or GW will see and raise the Brood Brothers kit price to £33.

Hello.
Well lads, if the cost per point is an issue, it's time to consider the Armageddon Steel Legion seriously. What a strange time we live now, I did not seen something like this coming, but there it is :
A complete, nice metal pewter squad costs much less than a plastic squad, which is partially 18 years old on top of that. Madness !

The steel legion costs 20.5 £ / 30 € , while the faux-new cadians are 29 £ / 35 €.

And there is a nice missile launcher in the steel legion box on top of that.
Sad that they discontinued the Steel Legion plasma gunner / officer and alternative heavy weapons (HB / LC) a while ago.
Hopefully there is Ebay & Co.

For the entire duration of 9th edition Guard have either been 50 or 55 points, not 40.

Still though, the price is pretty rediculous. In Australia they are $77.00 for 10 models, a Leman Russ is $83.00. Let that sink in.

One tip, buy the GSC Brood Brothers boxes instead. You get 10 Guardsmen, 1 Heavy Weapon Team, and then the GSC bits. You can even sell off the bits on eBay or something to get some of that cost back, or if you're good at converting you can file some of the ridges off the top of their heads and have some bald Guardsmen.

I do think getting at least a couple of the new boxes can be worth it. I'd like to use each of the unique heads as sergeants.

Just buy alternatives from other companies, it usually costs less and you get more.

The only issue here is that if your only choice is playing in GW stores or tournaments then you're banned. If that's not an issue then go for it.

Even non-GW tournaments these days often purport to ban non-GW models (whole models, I've never heard of anyone besides GW banning third party bits completely).

I started dabbling in alternative models for fun and flavor, but with excitation over krieg mixed with a bunch of krieg units getting squatted recently, I'm edging more towards 2nd party minis that often look as good or better, and cost less.

Perhaps they're planning to make Guard top meta for a while in 9th and are putting out these kits with the high price in prep. Or maybe they just figure Guard will buy it anyway because guard, Guard! GUARD! even if Guard is mid to lower tier

Man.... I'm a guard player and absolutly want them to be good, but this interaction with the "meta" is not healthy for the game.

As for the price Hikes they were inevitable especially with an update. I don't reccomend op buy sentinels if they're looking for a high point to dollar ratio....

Resin 3d printers are looking increasingly tempting.

I think that's GWs way of telling you guys down under that you need to invest in 3d printers.

If didn't already have like 20,000 points in Guard I totally would. I haven't really needed to buy anything other than rule books and codexes for a long time. I've been playing since 3rd edition.

On the topic of ETB models, I remember when the Death Guard box for Blackstone Fortress came out and I thought "Why would would anyone buy this for the models since you can get them so much more cheaply?" Then they ETB line got discontinued.

But just think, you could expand to 40,000 pts without having to sell a kidney. Or afford to branch out into other forces....
