I just finished some more terrain to supplement our Dwarven Forge terrain. Hopefully the paint schemes compliment each other now.

What do you think of Monster Fight Club terrain in general?

Do you repurpose toys like Schleich for your gaming needs?

Good but at their prices you might as well invest in a 3d printer instead.

I've considered Schleich for Kings of War, the fantasy line has some bonkers sculpts.

I was at one point optimistic about 3d printing but given my backlog of other hobby projects I do not see myself learning 3d printing as well, having researched it and learned that it is hardly plug and print, especially resin. The programming, hardware, maintenance, clearing and curing seems rather labor intensive as well as eating up a lot of workshop space.

The bigger, non-resin Monster Fight Club pieces, especially for a passable factory paint job (if you go that route) are a durable and fairly “plug and play” gaming solution although I will admit I prefer to tweak the factory paint work.

Some of the smaller KS only resin pieces are I think 3d printed so if you are into 3d printing these may not be as good a value for money, although there is still a lot of time saved with the factory paintwork.

Collecta and Safari are decent toy lines to look at if Schleich interests you.

Schleich is great for stuff like RPGs. I've got a giant snake, a giant owl, a big prehistoric fish as a sea monster and some giant frogs. I'm thinking about getting some dinosaurs as well, but I'm currently sitting on that. Paintjobs are good enough that I don't feel any need to repaint as well.

I have no issue using toys in my games, as that is pretty much what I am playing anyway!

I don't know anything about monster fight club but most of my sci fi terrain is toybashed from cheap resale toys.

A fair amount of my generic and fantasy terrain too.

I've got allot of Playmobil rocks that have been textured and repainted.

Not as much in the terms of minis but a Safari brand paint and play dragon figures prominently in fantasy chaos army.

More details on all of this linked in signature.

It's very "pretty". I confess I don't like the solid tree foliage, or the look. I like the IDEA of the pink & blue foliage, but I don't like the end result. The rocks are too clean and stylised - and not in a style that appeals to me. Sorry!

Looked up the MFC terrain. The rocks and some of the plants look good enough and the vines over the cave you have looks pretty good. Not something I'd purchase but that's mostly based on price and me being a cheapskate junk/diy guy when it comes to terrain. Not a dig on those MFC items by any means.

However, I have to agree with @stroller about the "Foliage" and "Forest" sets. The foliage just doesn't look right. The other terrain sets are basically painted and you could add a wash and maybe a bit of grime here or there to really finish them off. I'm not sure what you could do to the foliage to make it look better.
The trees without foliage look good though.

Funny this came up as I've just invested in 4 of the mats and 1 tables worth for my place and I think it's really, really nice. Gives a nice magical fanatsy feel about the look.

Well, seeing it in person, it all looks quite good. I'd happily play with all that.

The trees are still a bit cartoony with an odd shape at the bottom of the greenery. However, I bet those are some of the sturdiest terrain trees you can buy and that counts for allot in the long run. I'd certainly sacrifice some realism for durability.

We do not have any of the MFC trees yet so can not comment but we are thinking they will look better when mixed with other trees rather than on their own.

Seeing the pieces in person was very different for us compared to photos online.

The simple washes and drybrushing I did on the factory painted pieces helped tweak the terrain. The fallen leaves and DF style foliage on the rocks that I did was not really necessary. But even painting them from scratch was easy and the terrain is very durable.

Durability and ease of storage count for a lot when it comes to terrain. I've made some beautiful trees from cork, grape stems and various mosses and so on, and they just didn't survive long enough to even see a single game. So I've gone back to aquarium plants and model railway trees because they are durable.

Having accidentally dropped a forest piece I built from scratch and watching it explode has taught me the value of durability, even if it comes with a price tag.

Here is a Schleich dinosaur I intended to use in Ghost Archipelago at some point. Mostly done with just washes over the factory paint work, I did paint a few bits that needed a bit more detail. And added a base of course. I need to do more dinos at some point.

True, but sometimes you can come across a second hand Schleich dino on eBay (especially here in Germany) for less than even Wizkids or Reaper, yet still with decently sculpted details.

If you've got the time for the search, resale shops (in the states at least) are where I find tons of stuff for wargaming. Actual wargame brand stuff is rare, but to name just a few of the sorts of things I've found: schleich and other brands of dinos, McFarlane dragons, repaintable animals, tons of toys with applications for toy-bashing into industrial terrain, ceramic holiday houses for fantasy villages, etc, etc....

The results of that sort of thing are in the links in my signature.

Good point. Charity resale shops used to be good for that kind of thing back before Covid lockdowns.
