Which is the more commonly played format, Eternal War or Grand Tournament? The 40k app asks which you’re playing when you make a list and to be honestly I’m not entirely sure what all the differences are between the two.

Grand Tournament format. That's the one which uses the grand tournament pack book. Eternal war is using missions from the core rulebook.

Locally, we use the GT Missions. I've not opened the actual rulebook in nearly a year.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

The GT2021 mission pack changes how you can construct an army, this is why it asks.

I like Grand Tournament more, even outside of tournament settings. It's been updated twice already for 9th, the other game types haven't. Which means it's better balanced.

Everyone that is playing Matched play is almost always playing the GT mission pack. I don't think I've seen a sinlge person play eternal war locally since shortly after the GT2020 book came out.

Aren't Eternal War missions just the regular missions? Did the GT pack supersede them?

There are variations in things like secondaries and missions between the two. There are also more missions in the GT pack.

We only play eternal war when everyone forgot to bring their GT book for secondaries

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

We only play GT here but keep in mind we are a bunch of garage hammer players. Our local meta is more or less self isolated and for all I know Eternal War is really popular in groups in the region outside my own.

I play 100% GT right now, but then the more narrative players I used to play are also the most careful about covid so I might see a small percent of games start using the crusade missions.

I expect this cycle will continue, majority play GT, majority give feedback about GT, GT gets updated so is "better", so majority play GT.
