So- been out since ATC 2014ish.... Bought a new house and found all my 40k stuff. I have ordered the new rule book but it's not here yet. What are the biggest changes? What do the tourney power builds look like now?

Good trades: 8!!

2014... let's see, 7th edition just dropped eh?

To put succinctly... LOTS. Vast majority of players say that it's better, and I have noticed the past 2 editions (8th and 9th) brought in many more new players than previous editions. GW is also answering questions now, with FAQ's coming out within a few weeks of a codex, updated points at least twice a year, and the game just being in such an over-all healthy spot. Oh, you'll hear lots of belly-aching, because that's us gamers being gamers, but the number of "non-games" where the battle is decided before you even set up models almost never happen. Every faction can put together a battle plan that can work, and they are feeling very different from each other, which is awesome.

By and large, the action starts sooner, armies run out of steam faster, and more units have useful purposes. Here's why;

1. The battlefield is smaller, and areas of control are larger. This means that it's harder to "hide" a unit somewhere that's totally safe, and units can leap from one spot where they're really important to be, to another spot where they're really important to be, every single turn. The "no man's land" between armies is thus much smaller.

2. Start-of-turn progressive scoring at objectives forces the action. You will quickly fall behind your opponents if you try to just stay away. You may well table all your opponents this way, but you will lose every game as they have victory points and you have none. So you need to get to these objectives early, and fight to keep on them, and fight to get your opponent of theirs. However, as above, you'll find that this puts you in range for your opponent to quickly get to yours too. It's fast and bloody!

3. Being faster and bloodier, though, means that two armies dead set on annihilation will achieve that annihilation VERY quickly. It's a tough call whether you want to go heads up with your opponent and try to have your opponent run out of steam first, or if you'll need to play more cagey to try and out-survive them.

4. There's enough corner-cases in the game to make some units good that, well, have no right being good! Like Lictors. Their statline and abilities are really terrible, but they're inexpensive, and they're infantry, and that's good enough to efficiently perform actions (things where a unit in the right spot gives up their whole turn to do something - usually score victory points, and often only available to infantry). There's a lot of things like that, so there's a lot of units that have a purpose, even if it's not to be the strongest and toughest thing on the field.

There's heaps more - this is just the high level stuff that describes the game as a whole. Psychic phase is totally different, there are things called mortal wounds, lots of stuff have a bunch more wounds but there are even more weapons that cause you to lose multiple wounds, movement characterstic is back, missions are more challenging and less random, etc. - but you'll find out about all that in time. For now, go download either the GW app or Battlescribe, get a list put together, and hit the battlefield maggot!
