I always try searching for these questions before posting anything, and I didn't find anything so here goes...

Combat Squads At the start of deployment, before any units have been set up, if this unit contains the maximum number of models that it can, then it can be split into two units...
(Codex: Space Marines p.125)

VS.

10.Declare Reserves and Transports Both players now secretly note down on their army roster which of the units will start the battle in Strategic Reserves, which of their units will start the battle in a location other than the battlefield...
WHRB p. 281

So several questions here:

1. Does "At the start of deployment..." actually mean, during 11.Deploy Armies step of the process?

2. If YES, then is it even possible to break up a unit into two and put one half of it in Strategic Reserves?

3. Is that what it means when it says "...secretly note down which of the units..."? In other words, this information would not be revealed until 11. is completed, and therefore giving me an opportunity to put half of my unit in Reserves?

I hope thats not confusing. Thanks in advance for any help!

Step 10 Reserves& Transports happens before Step 11 Deployment. Combat squads happens in Step 11. HOWever... the FAQ for the core book says you may, so Yes.

The whole secret part is just to keep everyone honest. If I know my opponent is reserving his titan, I'll then reserve my combi-melta terminators. But If I don' know if that titan is on the table or not, I might or might not want to reserver my terminators... something like that. In reality, of course you almost always reserve combi-melta terminators.

From the Core Book FAQ:

At the Start of Deployment: A rule that happens ‘at the start of deployment’, is resolved at the start of the ‘Declare Transports and Reserves’ step of the sequence. Combat Squads (see Codex: Space Marines) is an example of just such a rule.
So you can split them up and put one part in reserves and deploy the other part.

I found that FAQ! It answered this question, and several others I had. Thank you very much!
