The Wastes of Krieg

Wanted to get some feedback on a little fiction I wrote for the background of my army, the 761st Siege Regiment of the DKoK which is made up entirely of female soldiers. Thanks for reading!

Marshal Astrid brought down her binoculars, having finished her survey of the field of battle. The heretics had seized the supply depot and had fortified its already formidable defenses even further. Lascannons, heavy bolters, plasma guns, all pointing out from behind layers of strengthened concrete and steel. The Imperium had made these sites difficult to seize from humanity’s enemies, but heretics always seemed to find a way to work their way through.

“Marshal!” Astrid handed her binoculars to the Officer to her left and turned to the trooper that had addressed her. “What is your designation trooper?” Hands behind her back and without missing a beat the soldier responded to her commander, “V-510, ma’am!” She nodded and said, “what do you have to report V-510?” “The artillery batteries are reporting combat readiness with a full salvo of shells ready to fly at your command.”

The marshal thanked the trooper and told her to return to her position. With a quick salute the soldier hustled back to her platoon. “Marshal Astrid?”, a voice from behind her said. She turned to her personal Vox Officer, V-115. “Yes?”, she responded. “We’ve received a message from the commander of the Cadian 302nd, it seems they have been held up by several pieces of armor the heretics commandeered. He wants you to wait to move until they are within 20 minutes of arrival to properly reinforce the assault.”

“Tell him that is simply unacceptable, we have our orders and we are expected to follow them. If they are unable to perform their own, that is their problem and not ours.” Astrid turned back and gazed once more at the panoramic view before her. Every minute they waited to attack was another moment they were failing to atone. She gazed down and observed the 10 platoons of soldiers dug in and ready to attack at the bottom of the ridge.

“Notify the tanks to advance as soon as the troopers charge in, and for the artillery to let loose at my command.” Without even looking she knew the operator had nodded and could hear her relaying the orders to the various soldiers under her command. No matter the cost, this base needed to be brought back into the Imperium’s hands. “Ma’am, all units have received their orders, and Watchmaster V-401 reports the sappers are in place and prepared for engagement. “

Marshal Astrid motioned for the vox and brought it up to her mouth. “To all units, we have received word that our reinforcements are being held up and that we should hold our position until they are nearer our location. But I ask you, do the enemies of the Emperor wait? Do we serve him by waiting instead of dying in his glorious name?” She paused for a moment before continuing, “No, we do not. Our homeworld spent over 500 years outside of the Imperial fold, and any hope of us in making amends for this travesty is only pushed further away the longer we wait.”

“If we all die here, so be it. As it is written, ‘In Life, War. In Death, Peace. In Life, Shame.” She released hold of the Vox and listened as the massive chorus of voices from all around finished the litany, “IN DEATH, ATONEMENT!” Astrid once more spoke through the Vox and related her final words before hell broke loose. “Valkyries of Krieg, CHARGE!”

Down below, the massed infantry rose and started their charge towards the enemy’s line. The moment they vaulted over the ridge top the worshippers of chaos came to attention and scrambled to their positions. Almost immediately the sounds of lasguns, autoguns, lascannons and a myriad of other weapons echoed across the valley and dozens of troopers fell over dead. With the assault in full swing, the marshal sent word for the artillery to send the first volley of heavy shells right onto the heads of those who would defy the will of the emperor.

[Thats all I have so far]
