Simple question, really: Sigmarines have scrolls with writing on them. Is there any published guide to this like at least one of the old Warriors of Chaos army books had for Chaos runes, various Ork codices had for their glyphs or 6th ed Tomb Kings for Nehekharan hieroglyphs?

I'm interested if GW fleshed it out enough and made it accessible to players or if it's just basic internal guidelines for sculptors to get cohesive results.

Not that I've seen any. It's just squiggles in a specific shape as far as we, the audience, are concerned.

Thanks! Bit of a shame, of course, but what can you do?

examine the lettering in exhaustive detail including every source no matter how obscure, create your own complicated Azyrite alphabet ... and rage everytime GW seemingly ignores this.

That is an excellent idea! Finally I can post naughty words on Dakka and there is nothing anyone can do because I alone am privy to the code! And it's all GW's fault for failing to satisfy my linguistic fetish!

is it really linguistic if it's just a writing system? Without grammar and vocabulary, it's just a funny way to write english.

If it relates to language, it's linguistic. That's literally what the word means.

The system of symbols used to write a language doesn't necessarily mean much by itself (less the more it relies on arbitrary symbols, more in the case of pictograms, for instance), but there is no doubt that it is a part of language and thus adequately described as linguistic. But of course, since most fiction is supposed to be accessible to contemporary readers most of the time everyone conveniently speaks English (or another real world language if the author writes for the appropriate audience) I'm sure Sigmar demands strict adherence to the Oxford dictionary even though in Azyr they use funny letters instead of Latin ones. I don't think GW needs to be more sophisticated than that. As a model company they're perfectly well served by considering the visual component above anything else..

well, GW has always subscribed to the Translation Convention, that is, the characters are speaking an appropriate fantasy language (Elvish, Dwarven, Low Gothic, etc) that is rendered into english for the convenience of the listener, the same approach most writers take. they get away with random runes on the armour for the same reason star wars got away with almost no visable text in most of its flims*, its just background material.

*the 1st time we see an actual, physical book in the star wars flims is in The Last Jedi, where they are sacred texts of the jedi order. theirs a common fan theory that holographic and other visual media have been so prevalent, for so long, that the majority of people are functionally illiterate, understanding only a small amount of text often directly related to their jobs which they learnt in a rote fashion.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

I've never heard that fan theory for SW before and I find it... doubtful. just because physical books don't exist doesn't mean people don't read.

Funnily enough, some of the squiggles are clearly Latin words, as if the artist missed memo to make it unreadable. It's not consistent...
