Hi all,

I've been building and painting my 30k Alpha Legion for about a year now, and figured that rather than infrequently posting to Reddit, I really should document the army's progress. I'm fairly new to photographing and editing, so please do excuse any dodgy/blurry pics I put up!

My inspirations for this army came from reading the Horus Heresy novel Praetorian of Dorn, which covers the Alpha Legion's attacks on the Sol system and the Battle of Pluto. As such, my aim is to represent the legion as it may have appeared in the mid/late Heresy, with some artistic licence. C&C and suggestions always welcome!

Here is the 9th Hort, 3rd Harrow, XXth Legion:

Iyago Inastus, Praetor and Harrowmaster of the 9th Hort

Amlohr Voss, former Headhunter-Prime and Legion Ancient

Legion Veterans w/ combi-plasma

The Inner Circle - Dawnbreaker Cohort. I have another 5 with spears, but no photos of them (yet!)

The Mailed Fist - Lernean Terminators, w/ volkites, power axes, a power fist and a chainfist

Warmonger Elias - Leviathan Dreadnought w/ Seige Claw and Grav-Flux Bombard

Armistos Kais Phaeton - Deredeo Dreadnought /w Anvilius Autocannons and Aiolos Missiles

The Old Ones - Saturnine Terminators, all with combi-plasma and power fists

There's a fair bit more stuff that needs photographing two 10 man tactical squads with rhinos (and another needing to be built/painted), a Javelin, a volkite heavy support squad, Autilon Skorr, and a load of stuff still on sprues

Plan is to update as and when I can, with no schedule or end goal. Just a chill blog. So, let me know your thoughts, suggestions and feedback!

Nice execution of a complex paint scheme. Where the Saturnine terminators from? Are they forgeworld or some other source?

Thanks, I'm glad you like them! The Saturnine Termis are from Heresy Labs. They had a few mould lines and 3d print layers from the masters they used, but were overall pretty good models!

Very nice looking army. Are you planning on adding any vehicles besides dreadnoughts?

Thank you for the kind words! I've got a pair of Deimos Rhinos (and accompanying tactical squads) and a Javelin speeder done, but not photographed, with another Rhino, Tac Squad and Javelin currently residing in plastic bags, awaiting attention.

My current slow-burn project for this army is a very large, OOP Lord of War tank, with a big fark-off plasma gun!

It's been a busy little while, here at the Alpha Legion.

Made some progress on a large project.

It's a Macharius Omega that I bought way back in 2016. Originally I intended to use it for a Death Korps army, and even got it half painted. Unfortunately, real life got in the way, and I never finished it.
To that end, it has been repurposed as my first Lord of War for the Alphas. I stripped it as best I could, and cracked on.

Stripped and mocked up, ready to paint.

Basecoated, with a wip Seeker for scale:

Blues, greens and highlights applied:

Work completed on the blastgun. I'm not fully happy with the heat blemish effect on the muzzle, but that can be tinkered with later:

Crew compartment more or less finished, complete with an (un)happy little servitor, to monitor temperatures and pressures:

Beep boop.

Apologies for dodgy camera work, I am an amateur in the extreme

C&C always welcome!

These are stunning pieces of work. The interior looks ace!

After spending more hours than I'd like to admit on the Macharius, I'm happy to call it finished. It's a little rough in places, due to its repurposed nature, and my painting can look a little dodgy under a camera lens, but that's life.

Considering I only own one of these, here is Macharius No. 2

Rather infuriatingly, I only noticed the massive mould slip on the techmarine's backpack halfway through painting him

C&C always welcome, apologies for my dodgy camerawork. This was too big to fit into my lightbox!

These guys look great! The green to blue transition on their plates is simply lovely, is it contrast blended over Leadbelcher? The Macharius came out great the highlights and grime work well together. The slip line on the techmarine could almost be battle damage to my eyes. I look forward to seeing the legion grow.

Very nice! As for the heat effect on the plasma cannon, it looks good - but I guess it seems a little short? It feels like given the size of the cannon and the heat produced it would extend further back?

Thank you! Yes, it's GW's Akhelian Green and Warp Lightning contrast paints over Leadbelcher, as per Juan Hidalgo's method.
Spoiler:

Thanks! I definitely agree with you regarding the heat effect, it is too short. I feel that something like a plasma gun of that size would almost scorch itself into oblivion. I'll attempt redoing it at a later date, when I can stomach it

I've been lacking motivation to do much painting, so I took the opportunity to photo some of the other models completed for the force:

Combi-Plasma Seeker squad (and 5 more on the way). These guys will run as a 10 man squad, deep strike and Preferred Enemy plasma their chosen target into oblivion.

Next up is a 5-man Volkite heavy support squad.
I absolutely hated working with the resin cabling for their backpacks, so I substituted guitar strings for it.

And an Armistos to go with them:

A very arrogant Centurion:

A Warmonger in Cataphractii plate, to lead the Lernean Terminators and bestow them with Deep Strike:

Autilon Skorr, for use in smaller games:

Finally, some WIP characters.

First up, a Librarian:

Second, a Saboteur, with a combi-melta. I'll be combining his anti-vehicle capability with Armillus Dynat's +1 to AP when in the enemy's deployment zone, for some nasty anti-tank hits.

Finally, a Chaplain to go with the Dawnbreakers and make them even nastier on the charge. Excuse the blu-tac on this guy, he's still in the concept stage.

Hi all,

Been a bit busy recently, hence progress has been slow.

I decided to focus my list towards 2500 points. So I painted up Armillus Dynat to lead it.

This was a really great model to work with, definitely quite challenging for me due to the level of detail and the pose. I'm not a fan of painting things in sub-assemblies, but it was required here. I'm not too happy about the gold details on the base, as I feel they distract the focus from Dynat himself. However, I only noticed that after I'd varnished the model completely, so I'm not in any rush to change it just yet.

Additionally, I wasn't happy with the pose on the saboteur that I was planning on making. So, I spiced it up with some different bits to make it more fluid and dynamic. I think it's turned out alright!

As always, C&C always welcome. Let me know your thoughts!

These guys are seriously good and keep on getting better! Loving the armour contrasting with the dark metal work. I see what you mean about the gold on the guys base. Maybe something like a nice heavy wash would dull it down a bit and still work over the varnish?

Models look great!

Agree about the gold on the base, maybe some weathering will be enough to take the shine off? Or, I guess a darker metallic colour like a bronze might work better?
