Finally getting my workshop set up and planning on building a dedicated spray booth
But diving into the options for 40k do folks find down draft or cross draft spray booths more beneficial?

Devil's in the details here ......

What type of "Fan" are you considering ? How well does it work against Filtering materiel etc ? Are you going to duct the "fumes" outside ? Are you going to provide light ? How big are you intending it to be ?

To be honest if all you're doing is 40K I'm not sure that a Booth is worth the bother. But if you plan on using it for other models ? Then it probably would be worth the effort.

I've built a few over the years, still have the last two I built <lol> And if you want further details and or to address some of these questions then ask.

How big of a booth are you thinking of making? For miniature airbrushing I don't think it makes a huge amount of difference, if you just have a decent exhaust fan to pull away the air immediately in front of you, then fresh air pulls in from where ever. That's what most hobby booths are, just a small semi-enclosed space a few square feet large with an exhaust fan, and fresh air just comes from the rest of your room.

Cross draft vs down draft is more of a consideration when building a very large booth, like, the size of an entire room, with the intention of spraying things like furniture or cars.

For a hobby sized spray booth, I think the main benefit is having your exhaust vent so it's pointing directly upwards as it leaves your house (assuming you're exhausting instead of just filtering and recycling the air). Reason being that when wind blows it could blow into your exhaust vent, overpowered your fan, but if it's pointed upward it'll tend to assist the fan even on a windy day.

For the effort involved, buy a booth. I paid about £70 for mine, comes with the extractor hose, filters, good light. Fishtail goes out of the window, job done. Also doubles as a glue cabinet so nasty fumes from plastic weld etc get sucked right out. And it's easy to move if you have to.
