How do!

After a very long wait, I finally managed to bag a HOTAS setup for my PS4, which means I’ll finally be able to get into Star Wars Squadrons.

Why the wait? Well, I’ve limited feeling and movement in my left thumb thanks to an ancient wrist injury. And when trying to use the joypad, I found myself really struggling. Not just in online matches, but in the story mode as well.

Gonna set it all up in my office/gaming room, and before you know it I should be flying A-Wings (the greatest of all fighters ever) like I stole them.

Once I am up to speed, anyone else out there fancy squadroning up?

Man this thing makes a difference! More stable flight, no more accidentally switching to “move your head around” type manourveres.

I’m specifically using a Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4, in case anyone else was looking for one.

It’s not massively cheap at £80, but for the life I’m getting out the game I bought it for, worth the investment.

Still haven't done more than dabble briefly with SW Squadrons, really need to put the time in. Loved X-Wing and TIE Fighter back in the day. I always used to lust after a HOTAS setup too, despite being firmly lefty and so making it rather impractical...

I too am a lefty, but I get on with this one pretty well.

To have pitch, yaw and banking on one stick has greatly improved my flying skills. And I don’t need to take my hand off anything to switch targets and that.

I've just seen that the Tie Fighter mod for Xwing: Alliance has come out and it looks really pretty.

I dug my joystick out for Squadrons and had a dabble before drifting away, but being able to play Tie Fighter again? Where did I put that joystick? At least I cleaned all of the crud off it a couple of months ago.

You need Alliance to play it, but I've only got the old CD version of it so I might have to get the Steam version - at least it's cheap.

If I had to rationalise how much a proper joysticks type setup improved my Squadrons experience is?

Well, I played X-Wing and TIE-Fighter with joysticks, and their expansions. So there’s a hefty old dose of nostalgia on a game I don’t need to go and do a big brain and clever to get the thing working. I’m lazy, I like simple.

But its the difference between driving the crappy old cars I’m used to, and driving my Dad’s super duper really not that duper but incredibly modern and pretty fun to drive car. It takes some of the arse ache out of it, in ways you can’t really appreciate until the arse ache you never knew it was an arse ache stops being an arse ache.

Specifically, for any kind of manoeuvre, it’s One Stick. Up for down, down for up. Side to side for, erm, side to side. Twist the stick for angles and that.

Freeing up my left hand for fasta/fasta/FASTA, and other fiddly things.

Too much drivel (and fair enough), a proper flight stick is essential for flight games.

For PC I've got an old Saitek Cyborg Evo. It handles nicely, has enough buttons and functionality that I probably don't need the extra throttle really, and is ambidextrous. Won't help me with Squadrons on the Xbox though, can't imagine the Xbox will know what to do with it... Might have to fire up X-Wing Alliance on the laptop though...

I get all misty eyed over Alliance!

Red Squadron! First into battle, first to recruit afterwards!

Starting to play online games.

Of course I sucked mightily at first, but by my third match only got shot down once, and did a fair amount of damage.

I don’t find it at all frustrating, despite being paired with peeps of a much higher level (the teams are balanced though!)

Trick is to keep moving and jinking, try to plink your opponent rather than barrage them to death. Oh, and save your counter measures for when you’re either focussed on something else, or are flying somewhere too tight to shake it off with some fancy flying.
