It seems GW is launching another campaign to get newbies into the hobby. It reminds me of the book reading quests I used to do in primary school.
It'll come with some merch, including a figure case.

I imagine they're going to be keeping existing hobbies from joining in so as not to just give away free merch. So that rules all of us out
Maybe I can get away with a funny moustache

It would be silly to exclude existing players. Encouraging engagement encourages sales. They only need each player to buy...maybe 2 extra kits they wouldn't have otherwise to more than wipe out a bunch of cheaply manufactured chinese knicknacks.

I imagine most experienced players could probably fill out the 30 steps without ever leaving the store just based on their prior work alone.
So opening it to experienced players would just result in them giving away free cases and other merch.

This is a good way to engage new blood.

My nephews will be taking advantage of this.

I agree, sounds like there's a lot of sensible objectives as well.
My local GW once launched an gaming style "achievement" system. It was a bit of a failure as most of the achievements they had were essentially just buy stuff and it never hooked anyone as a result.

It's a good idea.

These schemes never really seem to take off though, for whatever reason.

I hope it does well and yeah whilst free or even paid merch is nice, this really is something for the newbies. I'd feel bad just walking in and taking the booklet, filling it out fast (even if it had to be "new" stuff chances are most experienced people could do most of the things pretty fast) and then just wlaking out with free stuff.

I'm sure staff will work to make this new person friendly as possible. Plus who knows perhaps GW will have an "experienced" players reward scheme that has the same/similar rewards with a twist.

In the Before Times, I did a lot of my gaming/hobby at my local warhammer store. These programs do work, and we had a lot of folks signed up. There are quite a few folks I know if in my community who started their first army on the GW beginners program. I did get word that this is indeed for new players only, but it looks like a great program, and a fantastic way to introduce new hobbyists to all parts of the hobby.

Yeah I really got going with my local GW beginners program.
They started one just after Xmas, started with a big building event and following game, then continued with a slow grow games day (every sunday iirc).

So I definitely see the appeal for newbies and think this could be pretty good for them

So? At worst you're getting people into your store. Just say 'stuff you've done since then' and cap the number of stamps you can get per week to 10 and you'll irritate a lot of the grifters enough that they won't bother and the people who were actually planning on doing the hobbying get the stuff.

Of course, even if every single established player takes advantage, who cares? That's like...6$ worth of stuff in cost of materials and it's all branded.

It’s a good idea to kick off the rewards with a free miniatures case, as those are kinda useful! By no means essential of course, but desirable enough to get 30 things done.

Then there’s the other advantage of a set beginners programme. First and foremost, it gives structure to getting started. It also shows the parents that support and community is pretty big part of the hobby. And, depending on the age of the kid, the store is somewhere safe to drop them off for an hour or two of a weekend.

Though on that last point, I found a surprisingly high number of parents interested in getting involved themselves. Now that may be more my area (very middle class, lots of artsy types), but it was pretty cool to see a whole family taking part in the hobby. And yes. It did help the days takings somewhat.

I’d be interested to see what the various tasks are. As us in the Sad Old Git Brigade know, the hobby itself is quite wide ranging in scope, and there’s no requirement to dabble in every facet. Hopefully the task cards will reflect that - though there’s a lot to be said for every facet to be shown off early on. It may be the newb turns out like my friend Paul - mad keen on painting and modelling, but not all that fussed for the actual gaming side. But you can only find your own niche by trying a bit of everything.

Well having 50 to choose from to do the 30 should give flexbility enough

Very excited that I will be able to earn good boy stickers from GW if I follow all the rules and buy the merchandise they instruct me to.

This isn’t aimed at kids. Kids cannot afford warhammer miniatures. Games Workshop knows this.

Hmm. Seems slightly late to release this based on UK school holidays. Scotland is halfway through and England and Wales have been going for a couple of weeks already. You would think this would be started a d advertised just a bit in advance of breaking up.

I wonder if the merch got held up in transit. Or perhaps it’s linked to COVID restrictions in stores

Looking at the images, the sample certificate is dated 21 Feb 2021. So yeah, I suspect a COVID related delay - likely whilst they waited for Lockdown to be eased where in-store activities were desirable once again.

Good spot on the date. Seems likely. I will see what the boy thinks of it. See if I can crowbar him away from minecraft

Also don't forget Warhammer is also targeted at schools to be an after-school-activity. So the holidays aren't the only time to snare new customers; indeed term time can work well if the school has a local warhammer activity group - which is another thing GW supports and provides advice and packs for.

Good point. I was coming at it from the point of view of parents with little Timmy/Tina and 7, 8 or 9 weeks of “oh god how do we keep them busy!”

A bit of vaguely guided physical multi-dimensional crafting opportunity goes a long way.

It sounds like a fun way to introduce new people to the hobby...but I don't really like the idea of this being exclusive merchandise that existing fans aren't allowed.

At the same time its simple merch - I'm sure many long lasting fans will have things like faction dice tins, faction dice, 3rd party stuff and a host of other things. They are tied into the market so they are more apt to be picky. Plus who knows in a year that merch might be general sale and the project either wraps up or adds new things.

There's not going to be any sensible way that they could exclude existing players. And I would strongly suspect that a part of those 30 steps is going to be getting stamps for buying miniatures to build this 'new' army... so having an existing collection is unlikely to help any considerable amount.

They could exclude most vets by only allowing you to sign up with thr store manager's permission (like you need stamps to complete stuff).
Sure people could still lie and pretend and the managers are unlikely to be very judicious, but it'd keep most people away.

Allowing store managers to choose who can sign up and who can't would immediately open themselves up to claims of discrimination. And for little viable purpose, as aside from regular customers they might recognise, they have no way of knowing whether the person walking in the door is a new player or just someone they haven't seen or don't remember having seen buying stuff before. It would be an absolutely absurd restriction.

best to let anyone do it yeah, especially as the buzz of seeing veterns doing it would be a good way to get newbies to. the problem with things like these is if the vets aren't doing it, it's forgotten about. also chances are there are gonna be things in the hobby that even veterns may not have done, There may, for example be someone whom hasn't read any of the fiction who decides a free case is worth getting around to reading Eisenhorn, etc

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Figure case , dice and certificate are obvious, any idea what the other bits are?

Looks like:

Notebook in the top left; then a figure case then the certificate

Next line looks like some kind of zipper wallet, perhaps for accessories? Then an accessories tin (looks metal) for dice; then either a bookmark or a ruler in a dark sheath.

My bets on a bookmark bottom right.

I don't think top left is a note book, I can't see any paper. My guess is a wallet thingy for your Battle Honour cards.

best guesses?

some sort of A5 card wallet for your battle honours, one of thier standard £35 soft shell carry cases, a A5 notebook/army list case, a dice case/rolling tray, and a 6" ruler. though i think the bookmark idea has merit as well.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

I think its a note book because you can see the folded edges like its a hardback. You can't see the paper because of the angle. The pouch below it could just be a notebook pouch.

It might also be an army-roster book but I don't think so if simply because this is generic GW and AoS and 40K have very different roster designs - to say nothing of the fact that many beginners might be starting with Warcry or Killteam not core games.

So a generic hobby note book fits,

There's no markings on the thing bottom right, just the Warhammer logo. Definitely a bookmark imo.

A notebook isn't impossible, it'd certainly fit as cheap merch they can slap the Warhammer logo on for 1/10th of a penny in China.
Certainly not a purpose designed army roster though, you gotta buy the app for that.
