How do!

Couldn’t find an existing thread, and it’s been a while since we heard about this, the second sequel to the original story. But yesterday a new trailer was released, and it’s looking rather fun. The reveals are kinda slow burn, and aren’t showing off a whole lot.

I have a suspicion that what we have seen only extends part way into the movie. But we are seeing some crunchy bits, particularly in the second trailer. I shan’t say what they are in this OP, as I figure peeps might just want to watch and enjoy for themselves.

Here’s the first

Here’s the second, which shows us a Wee bit more ankle…the saucy minx.

Release is a wee bit off yet, being 11 November 2021 in the U.K., but I am quietly fairly hype for this one, as I’ve enjoyed the other films (yes, including that one) and really enjoyed The Real Ghostbusters as a kid (and to this day when it’s on streaming platforms)

I keep forgetting this is a thing. That trailer does raise the hype levels though.

Definitely been a hype train derailed by the Pandemic.

I really do hope a lot is being held back. Been a while since a trailer did that (well, feels that way to me!) Certainly the sort-of slapstick humour of the others isn’t much evidenced in the trailers.

Might even go to the cinema to see this one.

Kind of hopeful as its likely Ghostbusters was the second best 80's movie ever (behind Princess Bride)

Yeah, this new trailer is getting me excited. Looks to be hitting almost all the right notes.

And thank you so much for reminding me that The Princess Bride was also from the 80s. Feth, do I feel old now.

The wedding scene was filmed just up the road from me, and my friends are getting married there later in the year.

Which reminds me….I need to RSVP!!

I have watched this trailer 3 times now with this comment in mind, and I have literally no idea to what you are referring.

Sony, on your bike. I am not paying out for another film with editing done by those who had never watched a youtube tutorial, let alone attended film school.

Unless there is overwhelming praise by both critics, fans and film making professionals alike then this is a hard pass.

The movie is going to be available tonight in the US as a sneak preview, and then in wide release tomorrow.

Not sure if I want to go see it, to be honest. It kind of looks fun and I like the franchise, but almost all the early reviews describe it as being basically a souless, unfunny collection of references rather than a full movie. As one review put it, "The whole movie is basically the Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at the TV meme for 125 straight minutes." Obviously I don't make a decision solely based on critical reviews, but as Robert Ebert put it - "a good review should let you know if you would like the movie even if the reviewer didn't". So far, I am reading a lot of issues.

Normally I'd just err on the side of going because, honestly any excuse to eat a bucket of popcorn - but now that the popcorn might come with a topping of plague, I must be choosier.

On top of that, the idea they repurposed a genuinely fun grown up adventure movie into a tween fantasy never super felt great to me either, so they didn't start out on firm ice with me.

What do you guys think?

I’m definitely going to go see it. Mostly because I can, and I’m also re-learning what it is to be able to do stuff after work, thanks to no longer commuting.

I’m not interested in seeing this at the moment. Maybe I’d see it on TV if it got great reviews, but definitely not in a theater. The ads are almost “I saw the thing and I clapped” levels of nostalgia bait, which worries me.

Yay said, I’m a huge fan of the original, so I’ll be listening for any useful Gozer-related tidbits of lore I can sift for more headcanon.

I dunno...RT score is 66% right now. That's not great, but it doesn't seem like it's getting panned or anything...? I mean, I've liked movies with lower scores.

Also, it's a *true sequel* to a movie series three and half decades old. I agree that 2 hour-long fan service exercises can be silly and empty, but isn't this one kind of a nostalgia-fest just by existing? I'm not sure how you can avoid that. And didn't audiences overall say 'meh' to the fresh new take in 2016?

I'll see it in the theatre. Just not likely opening weekend or during peak hours. (those are my gaming hours! )
I'm lucky in that my daily schedule since 2018 is quite flexible & the local theatres only 10 minutes down the road. I've seen alot of stuff over the years on early tue/wed afternoon showings.

As for its ratings? (shrugs) I've liked things with worse. And enjoyed very highly rated stuff - like the current Dune - less.
So we'll see. I suspect I'm going to be entertained enough though.

I mean, I liked Suicide Squad quite a bit. The ratings don't deter me per se It's the content of those criticisms that worry me more.

I would say that the mixed nature of those reviews suggests that one's experience may have a lot to do with whether you're feeling cynical that day or are open to just going with the 80s nostalgia.

I’m down for 80’s nostalgia. And let’s remember this is likely mostly a teen aimed movie.

A lot of what I've heard is that its just not bad nor particularly great. It's just fine I suppose.

Primary complaints from sources I follow, not story related in any way, but just the general vibe of it:

Spoiler:

It's extremely concerned with the importance of Ghostbusters lore, which was never really the point of the series. The big memorable punchline of the original was that the great ancient elder god appears as Ziggy Stardust and summons a giant cartoon to destroy the world. This one is not really a comedy with very few jokes, so the whole thing doesn't really carry the spirit of the original.

My best guess is that it feels more like a sequel to the cartoon than the movies and likely spends a lot of time doing franchise building than focusing on a being great on its own. I suspect its trying very very hard to make fanboys happy.

Yes all the comments I have seen highlight its servicing of a creatively bankrupt fan culture that exists to see the things it knows about referenced rather than good stories told...

Both the recent sequels seem to forget it was a straight film played for laughs with one funny guy playing off the straight and absurd situations.

The second film, flawed as it was, came up with a new threat, some new gang dynamics, and a fun gimmick the first didn’t have (mood slime). The trailers for this movie are all terror dogs and Stay Puffs, which feels like a step back.

Here's the thing. Getting 'panned' these days is often agenda based. Just getting bad scores in the poor-to-mediocre range is actually worse, because it means it wasn't interesting enough to produce passion in anyone- not the fervent fans, nor the people who want Causes X, Y or Z or Actors A, B or C to not exist. It likely just means the movie isn't very good... which with a bunch of kid actors and anchoring the movie between the incompatible concepts of 'remember the original' and 'want teen audiences...' Well, that just seems inevitable.

Well, a lot was said about 2016 before anything was shown about it so its almost impossible to have a meaningful discourse on. The same is true of that Ghostbusters reboot. With some time to have let the culture war die down, the ultimate issue is that it wasn't really all that fresh or new. As a reboot/remake it hit the same basic story beats of the original without really having its own purpose.

I think something that's been endlessly lost about the greatness of the original is the mundanity of it. Regulating paranormal extermination and extra dimensional tears into the fabric of reality to a struggling service business whose bored secretary nods through panic screams before sending the slobs to come wreck your place and then bill you for the trouble was so core to what makes the original movie so great in a way that nothing since has managed to replicate. Everything else has focused on the toyetic aspects, the specific gear and such that made the cartoon such a huge success for kids. As one of those kids I totally totally get the reverence for it, but I also get that that's not what made the first movie great and isn't the backbone of a great movie on its own. Without its own core premise, its just trying to sell iconography for something where expansive worldbuilding is kind of the antithesis to 3 friends and someone that answered their help wanted sign struggling to keep their little business afloat.

Like if you really want to do a modern Ghostbusters you need to modernize the premise. It's brand rife for a take on large corporations copying successful small businesses and driving them out of business with cheaper prices and initially superior service that degrades over time as budgets are cut to appease stockholders. There's a legit movie there, but neither modern film seems to be as interested in doing something with the brand as it is trying to make kids want to wear a proton pack as much as they want to wield a lightsaber.

I'd go with a gig economy franchise instead. Door dashers and Uber drivers chasing a hot new business premise and getting screwed on the fine print and insurance.

Dig up some obscure ancient deity or demon of bureaucracy to be bending the whole thing around in pursuit of a planar cross-tear or something similarly yadda-yadda.

Yeah, I could absolutely see that working out too. The point is you can't really modernize Ghostbusters without recognizing that the original leveraged so much of its comedy as a service industry parody and with that there's a need to parody the modern service industry.

Any Dakkanauts been to see it as yet? If so, what are your non-spoiler thoughts.

I may be off to see it tonight. Meant to be going to a gig, but my +1 is likely to cancel due to COVID.

I'm going to see it on Monday night. Lots of expectations about it, mostly because it's the only movie that interests me that will be released before the end of 2021 and also comes after the Eternals' fiasco, I really want a solid fun movie. Paul Rudd being part of it isn't a good sign, but the two leading kids are very talented, and I adore CarrieCoon. Fingers crossed .

... NGL, this sounds like a better premise than what I have seen in the trailers.
