So, Magpie launched a Kickstarter for Avatar Legends: The RPG in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/magpiegames/avatar-legends-the-roleplaying-game

It's been two days, and well... it is killing it. Breaking all sorts of records and taking all sort of names. It's currently at $2.27M and rising (EDIT: Well... it was when I wrote it xD):

I am a big fan of the series and I'm even a fan of the PbtA "system" (it's not a system ), so I remain hopeful that the game will be worth my while.

Really looking forward to it. I got in on it early (it had only made 1 mil LOL) but regardless PBTA is the perfect introductory system to the kind of folks who would go 'an avatar RPG? Awesome, I love avatar!"

Given that i've basically universally had a great deal more success getting people I know I already like into RPGs, as opposed to finding people who already like RPGs and trying to like them, this is the ideal product for me

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

The game system this uses is actually very simple, one of the simplest I've ever ran, and yet really fun with decent options for the simplicity. My group of 5 that regularly plays has like 50+ years combined of RPGs and when I did a one of of a Harry Potter fan RPG using the Apocalypse engine it was some of the most fun we had.

Really recommend it.

Quoted for truth.

I am interested in seeing how this comes out. I have to admit, when I watched the show with my kid, the first thing I thought was..... "This would be a cool RPG world".

Years back, I wrote and ran my own from-scratch Avatar RPG. It struck me as bizarre that there was not already a licensed game at that time and about two weeks ago I commented to a friend who played in my homemade game that it was even more bizarre that there still wasn’t one all these years later. Lo and behold, this KS. I immediately backed, despite having no love for Apocalypse World.

If it's any consolation, it's a whole lot more Masks than AW.

Well. $3.3M+ in four days.. not bad at all xD

I don't think they're going to add much more sustantive stretch goals, so I suppose most people will come during the last 48h, if they are not in already...

...that is, unless they decide to add the Republic City and the Spirit World sourcebooks to this KS as add-ons, then all bets are off.

Considering Viacom is dumping a lot of money to build up the Avatar franchise over the next few years there's going to be a lot of legs to this game if received well.

I mean, it's cruising towards $5M already, and still going strong... by now it has more than doubled last RPG-related biggest KS ever, and it's sitting at 19th biggest KS overall.

What I was getting as was there's going to be a lot of new media in the Avatar world so there's a lot of new content that can be released as those new tv shows, videogame and so on come out over the next 10 years.

For sure... now, 15 years after the original series, Paramount has decided that it is interesting enough to invest in it ^^.

But even now, before Avatar Studios actually start, you also have all the graphic novel continuations and the Kyoshi novels.

That said, I'd love to see a new avatar going about in a cyberpunkish future, that could be hella cool.

Great IP and nearly 58,000 people in line - what a great success story!

I launch our game 9/1 (Minotaur Catacombs) and would be really happy with 1% of that!

Hey question -

The website for this game mentions a "quickstart guide' that you can get for entering your email. I've fed two emails into this thing at this point and haven' gotten one. Has anyone else got the avatar legends quickstart guide?

Personally im just curious about how closely some of the mechanics are going to cleave to masks.

^and now for the part of the Kickstarter process that's always the funniest: When somebody pitches a relatively simple thing that a lot of people want, and people hand that person the budget of a moderate hollywood movie.

If a person in a traditional business model makes a product, and millions of people buy it, they usually go 'wow! Gee whillackers, guess I made a lot of money!' but when it happens to select industries, generally

-indie video games
-indie game development
-kickstarters for artistic mediums

then inevitably if they make a large, unexpected amount of money, people start asking "hey, what gives, you made 50x as much as you asked for, why didnt you deliver us 50x as much product????? What's with this simple thing that a lot of people wanted that you've given me?"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Quickstart is probably not written yet. I imagine its getting your email on the list so that when its ready it will be sent out.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

The quickstart rules are available. Just follow the link and subscribe to their newsletter. You should get a "Welcome to the Avatarverse!" email 5-10 minutes later with the rules. It was in my promotions folder on my gmail account.

Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. Got it! THank you, I did not know about the 'promotions' folder's existence.

Damn, this "Quick Start Guide" is....almost a complete PBTA game. There's a lot of great stuff here. Love the route they took decoupling bending styles from the playbooks and running them as more 'personality archetypes'. The previous, unlicensed Avatar PBTA RPG "legend of the elements" had each type of bender as a playbook plus several randos like Warrior, Scholar, Noble, Etc, I like this way better.

Love the very slightly more involved combat mechanics than, say, Masks or Monster of the Week where there's one 'Engage in direct combat' move which generally ends up being one that a lot of players just end up defaulting to.

A typical round of Masks combat generally has 1 or 2 players choosing to do something to glean information or create a situational advantage, and then the rest just default to directly engaging with the one move that's for that. I also like having 'status effects' in addition to the emotional Conditions, as in masks theres often a conflict between what makes sense mechanically (i.e. someone getting tossed painfully against a wall and breaking a couple ribs being at -2 to direct combat, and needing to help out more creatively in the next round) vs what made sense thematically. Saying 'you get thrown against the wall and you break your ribs, so you're scared now' doesnt always make much sense - maybe that actually made them more angry and defiant, but theyre just physically impeded by the broken ribs. So the separation between conditions and in-the-moment status effects is greatly appreciated.
