Primarily I was thinking about bolters, my recollection is that bolter ammo is made from adamantium, they are explosive adamantium shells.

But adamantium is supposed to be very rare, very expensive and super hard. That’s why Ghaz half adamantium skulls is so special.

Is adamantium still the material described as being used to make bolter rounds? Where else is adamantium used, where does it come from, is it really that rare is is it clearly widely available?

I don't remember it been mentioned in relation to bolter rounds...

Lexicanum wrote:Adamantium is perhaps the strongest material used by the Imperium, impenetrable to most commonplace weapons. It is the material composing the Imperial Palace's Eternity Gate, and is often used in conjunction with plasteel and ceramite, such as in the structure of Terminator Armour.

I believe you're thinking of "diamantine" which is actually just super hard ceramic.

I was wrong!

Lexicanum wrote:Kraken Pattern Penetrator Rounds: Powerful armour-piercing rounds. The deuterium core is replaced by a solid adamantine core and uses a heavier main charge. Upon impact, the outer casing peels away and the high velocity adamantium needle accelerates into the victim, where the larger detonator propels shards of super hardened metal further into the wound. These are effective against heavily-armoured infantry.[Needs Citation]

So it's used in special issue ammo.

I have a memory of the story of the discovery of lion el Johnson where Luther shoots at him thinking he is a beast of Caliban. I remember a reference to a shard of white hot adamantium injuring the lion.

But that’s probably 2nd or 3rd edition
