Since there seems to be a surge of interest in the game with the release of the Shiho Clan I though we could keep the News and Rumors thread clear of rules questions and such by doing this thread. Feel free to post questions and anyone feel free to answer them if you know the answer. Also lets see some of your WIP and completed models or even what you just got or ordered. Basically this is a catch all thread for the game.

I'll throw out an old WIP picture of my Minimoto after the first wave of the clan was released.

The bear is on a 40mm the rest are on 30mm bases. I believe the all the models in the game are 30,40 or 50mm except one giant model in the Jung Pirates which is actually on a 60mm base.

Well, then lets start with the important one for us who dont know anything of the game; Can anyone drop a few lines about how the game is played, what is its strenghts compared to other skirmish games, the games model scale and material....... basicly sell us on the game.

Models are 30 mm similar to Warmachine and the like. Cast in pewter almost exclusively. Very nice sculpts. Very few more than two pieces out of the set above. I've bought most of the rest of the Shiho line and that remains true throughout.

As for what makes the game stand out; for one, it's played on a very small 2x2 board with relatively slow movement compared to other games. A lot of movement happens along with other actions, so it does a good job of capturing that knife fight dance feeling.

The big gameplay gimmick though, is that combat is resolved as an exchange of attacks from both players. When models initiate a melee exchange, the models involved gather D6 equal to their melee pool of two different colors, one for attack and one for defense and roll simultaneously. The active player first resolves their attack dice against the opponent's defense, before the opponent resolves their attack against the active player. You have to decide how much you want to balance your attack and defense, as going all out leaves you very vulnerable to taking a lot of damage in retaliation. Actively defending yourself is important because with no guard, combat can be very very deadly.

One of the other interesting things about melee exchanges is they remove one of the two activation counters of the defending model as well as the attacker and models in melee turn to face each other directly. This leads to a lot of defensive play strategy where putting a lot of dice into defense and holding off a powerhouse model while other models complete objectives or just maneuver them so a friend can strike from behind is pretty vital part of play.

It's a neat world and system. A lot of cool variety like Oni, Tengu, Sumo, Samurai, Snakes, Ninjas, etc. It leans more into classic film swordfights than acrobatic fantasy spectacle and does a good job capturing a lot of the broad appeal of Japanese myth and fantasy.

Very tactically oriented too. When you move to engage an enemy they turn to face the model coming into the fight. If you attack them from outside of their front arc then you get bonuses to the attack. You can also throw "junk" troops at a bigger person to use up their activations and then go in with your better fighter.

Multiple types of scenarios with different win conditions for each one. It is very possible to wipe out your enemy and still lose the game by not playing the victory conditions. So you need to have a balanced list to be able to take and control objective, fight, do Ki Feats and to make it across the board alive.

Each faction has multiple styles of play and can play them each decently, so you are not stuck with "An Assault army" if you go with one faction.

basic games are 70 Rice (Points) with largest games at 100 (Rice). Currently only set up for 2 player games, but I think they are working on a 3+ way scenario. Most starter boxes are 70 rice and cost 35 pounds sterling (Roughly $49.00 currently with exchange rates). Starter sets are pretty good and contain a set of faction specific cards. Every model has it's own card with it's stats on them, so no Codex needed. Some of the older starters that may be online in game stores have older cards in them, the newest edition updated all the point costs and streamlined a lot of the wording to reduce confusion. All the personality cards are shown on the website so you can print them out and proxy models to try them out. Full rules are also available online at their website with a page of background for each faction.

Right, just to give you an idea of size, the stuff I have painted above is 146 points and these guys are closer to the cheaper fodder end of things. I think 5-8 is pretty standard army size.

My friends and I are tentatively interested in Bushido (so our Test of Honour scenery can pull double duty!), but we're finding the sheer quantity of stuff a little overwhelming.

I think I understand that there's some older sculpts that aren't as good, and some newer ones that are much nicer / better cast quality, but I can't tell if they're all the same scale or not. Have they remained pretty consistent or are the old ones tiny in comparison? Is there a way to tell which is which before buying?

I guess I have a few questions:

- what's a good set of things to pick up? The faction starters, or are there some must-haves for each?

- do we need to buy all the cards and accessories, or are they just optional extras?

- is there a breakdown of how the different factions play anywhere? The GCT Studios website is incredibly slow to load so really annoying to navigate

Some of the older sculpts could use a refresh, but they are still decent. Mainly the faces are not as nice as the newer models. I just started my 5th??? Faction I think (Ito Clan) and Sakura and Satsuki faces are a bit rough, but my painting skills are not perfect either, so they will do. The Gray Pilgrims face also does not live up to the artwork and a couple of my older monk sculpts don’t have the definition of the newer sculpts, but they are easily on par with the Test of Honour metals for quality.

Most importantly they are all to the same scale .

Where to start.

Right now they said they were out of the books (But the full book/rules are available online to download and print) and also out of the 2 player starter. I’d advise getting two individual starters between you and your friend. I’d also get the clan card packs for those clans for options, but they are not required. Tokens are nice, but you can use anything to help remind you of all the traits and movements.

The accessories are nice visually, but you can easily make 30,40 and 50mm objectives. For the 4” zones of Control, here in the US, Walmart sells cork coasters that are 4” diameter for about $1 each, I’m sure in the UK there is an equivalent source. The 8” circles are probably a scratch build item, but should be easy enough.

As for how they play. http://bushidothegame.wikidot.com/wiki:factions is a great source of info. Up to date with the cards on it even the newest releases. If you click factions to the left side and then click on the ones your interested in they have a section talking about ways to play them. Every faction has multiple models with varying skills, so each faction has different ways to play and each is viable. Some are just better than others, and with different game scenarios it’s hard to know which will be optimal.

Like I said earlier, the starter and the cards are an easy start and should get you enough for a variety of games. I just decided I wanted to start Ito, so I bought: Ito Starter box, Ito Clan cards, the Blessed bundle and Akane and Azami because I wanted to try a serpent person army. It was about $200 aftershipping and arrived yesterday. It’s way more models than I would ever need at any time (I think 200 rice), but I wanted options and cheaper to do 1 big order than multiple international shipping charges. They can fight my: Ninjas, Temple, Minimoto, and Shiho(rebellion, not the newest Shiho).

That is really helpful, thank you!

I don't mind picking up the accessories, but I was looking at the available stuff for the game and there's over 300 SKUs so it's a little intimidating. This makes it a bit easier, so that's great.

I'm personally liking the Tengu, the Shiho and the Temple but there's lots of cool stuff. It's a bit difficult to decide which one but too expensive to get them all (never mind all the storage space required...)!

The Temple is one of the first clans released and has gotten a lot of support over the years. It is very daunting to think about getting them all.

I started with Ninja and the Temple starter (older one not available any more) along with some extra models. I then completed the ninjas and have kept up as they add one here and there and bought more Temple alongside the way. I also bought all the Minimoto as they came out ( I forgot to order the standard bearer guy as he was just released), so I have two complete clans now and a large force of temple. I had gotten all the Shiho up until the last two releases and almost bought those instead of the Ito, but I saw how many were buying them and wanted to do something different. I still haven’t found anyone local to play, but I will have plenty to demo with if I ever free up my schedule.

I admit I’m a hoarder, it’s one reason I never fully jumped into Infinity, I could never hope to get it all. As far as I know the only models that have been retired was the drunken master, but he was supposed to be a limited edition model anyway. Still kicking myself for not grabbing him a while back .

Buy what you like, check out the cards online to try and see the synergies that can be used and maybe come up with some plans. Slowly grow. If nothing else they might make for some interesting models for custom Test of Honour games.

The game has theme bonuses that I find really helpful for narrowing down where to start. That wiki link does a great job listing them on each faction page along with every model that works with them. Picking one really narrows down what you need to get started. They don't seem all that critical to gameplay, but do a nice job of breaking up the huge list of models into something more manageable.

Picking up the individual starters seems a little better plan the 2P starter anyway. They're far from critical though, so if you want to just pick up a selection of models that appeal to you, you won't miss out on much.. Anything like upgrade cards and the like are easily found on the wiki.

I just took the plunge and ordered my first Ito models, really looking forward to diving into the rules as well. Are there any obvious beginner mistakes or traps one should be aware of? What's your general impression of the ruleset?

I've also found the stellar Kenjiro from Tale of War in one of my boxes and stripped him for the occasion. Gotta find a way to make him work as a proxy.

Rules look tight, haven't gotten to play just yet.

One thing I've learned? Don't be afraid to just really look at the Wiki. Apparently Themed Forces are a Big Deal, and they can make you really decide what to build towards or buy. I'd highly suggest taking a peek at the Ito list on the Bushido wiki.

Formations is the wrong word, IMO, if you're going for a 40k comparison.

They don't really have a comparison from 40k/WHFB in my opinion...at least from recent memory. Some of them will only allow certain things while some others will exclude a good chunk of things while allowing others.

For reference though, they'll tend to look like this:
Spoiler:

They can be printed on cards, and you'll get that first one is in the Ito Clan starter set as a handy reference bit if you choose to use it.
The other two are in the Ito Clan Special Cards Set, alongside a bunch of other goodies.

Yep, they do a great job offering many viable builds for each faction. I myself just bought into Ito and I prefer their Snakemen. Both types are viable and have ways to win.

I haven't played either, I had someone sort of interested in it at the local FLGS, but then they just moved . I can look at lists later to see where I was going with it, I know I was going with The Blessed theme and using speed and power to get across the board and take objectives/ get the VIP to safety.

Yeah, it seems to be quite a niche game as well, so finding regular opponents is not gonna be easy here either. I might be able rope a friend into playing a couple of games and see how it goes from there.

I feel very fortunate to have a group that's not really dedicated to a game system as much as playing games. When I want to try something I can just ask who's interested and can usually get 3-4 players to give it a try.

Wish I lived in that mythical place. FLGS is very GW (40K and AOS) and Magic, Pokemon they have Battletech now also and they have RPG groups, but they shy away from games like Gaslands, Frostgrave and anything Mantic . I tried to discuss it with the owner, but really not seeing his concern for making money off of all the Wizkids, pathfinder and reaper models besides as D&D figures for encounters.

It's something I worked to cultivate. Whenever someone expressed interest in a game I'd offer to pick up a starter and give it a try and sold some of my pile of shame at a loss for people interested. A lot of people it seems are interested in side games, but when the social group is dependent on a particular system its really hard to express interest in a way that doesn't sound like "I don't want to be friends with you anymore". I've just found it a healthier mindset for a group to rally around playing games together, rather than playing THIS game together.
