Hi all,

I'm new here so hello...

I've been collecting (mainly to paint) space wolves since the 3rd edition. I try to keep my units legal just incase I want to ever play (maybe one day).

So I recently picked up some primaris units, which I am loving. And the 9th edition codex. What I cant seem to figure out is 'how do I know what units from the marines codex I can use and convert?'. Either I'm being daft or its not that obvious.

Can I take a techmarine in primaris armor? and if so, where does it state that..

Anyway, happy hobbying and thanks in advance for helping me and being kind if I am just daft.

im fairly certain that there is a (pretty short) list of units space wolves are NOT allowed to take, and everything else you can replace the <chapter> keyword with "SPACE WOLVES" and take them just fine.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Things are a bit different now compared to 3rd. SW can take anything in the Codex except those listed on p124. Some gain extra keywords in the SW chapter and some have extra wargear options.

You also have a supplement that details your unique units, stratagems, warlord traits, relics and psychic powers.

Yeah - you need Codex: Space Marines and Codex Supplement: Space Wolves, and there's a list of what you can't take in the Supplement IIRC.

Space Wolf specific rules can be found in Codex Supplement: Space Wolves. This should also include a list of which Primaris units that Space Wolves can not take (if any).

Slipspace is right, and it's in the Codex rather than the Supplement:

• Space Wolves: The following units cannot be from the
Space Wolves Chapter (or any of their successor Chapters):
APOTHECARY; ASSAULT SQUAD; DEVASTATOR SQUAD; STERN GUARD
VETERAN SQUAD; TACTICAL SQUAD; VANGUARD VETERAN SQUAD.

Hi,

thanks for the prompt replies.

Page 124, found it... ok, yeah that's quite a short list (good news)... I guess although of the units don't exist I can kitbash something...which is half the fun.

I still think a supplement codex isn't as good, seems like a way to force the purchase of 2 books to me. I'd rather pay more for one concise book with everything in, like in previous editions. Feels like you are being penalized for not playing bog standard marines.

Any I digress, thanks again...

well, bog standard marines also have supplements to buy. Ultraimarines has a supplement too now.

I guess they can charge what they like, but can't help feeling they are pricing people out of the hobby.

£23 for a primaris tech marine vs. £35 for 10 hell blasters, also feels a little weird...

Still, its the hobby we've chosen...

thanks again all...

Still waiting for GW to let Space Wolves use the Leman Russ Exterminator again since the 3rd Edition Space Wolves supplement. Until then, I use mine as a counts-as Predator.

There are some good sides to it though. Buying a box blade guard you will get a ton of parts to make librarians, lords and other characters. Also people seem, at least here, to kit bash a lot. A Power ax, some parts from the hellblaster kits, some parts from the aggresor kit on a body of an Dark Empire Captin. I don't think I have seen a single actual Librarian or Chaplain model being bought. Everything is either outridder or other parts from other kits or recast parts.

But you are right, the time of GW making wonderful kits like the GK termintor one is gone. The ork new boys are a good example of that.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

TBF you can still play each SM sub-faction using just the Codex. It might not be optimal or competitive but it's not impossible like when running pure Primaris lists for my Deathwatch, I often don't need to look at the Supplement unless I have something very specific I need.
Plus, especially for the more fleshed out factions, having 90 core-datasheets, the basic rules/strats/psychic powers PLUS all of the Chapter specific ones, you'd likely end up paying the same cost anyway and have a very unwieldy book.
As for expensive units, look for things like Hatchet Partworks Imperium or the Starter Sets. They're push-fit models but they can still be easily converted with Chapter trappings in most cases and are often very cheap (relatively speaking).
