How do!

So you’ll probably know I’m a nutter for GW’s background stuff. That so much of isn’t truly definitive, but presented as points of view with varying levels of trustworthiness only adds to the fascination.

Take Xenology and Liber Xenologies. Both are from a solidly Imperial point of view. Xenology (long out of print) is the more reliable in-universe, compiled as if is by a Magos Biologis. Even then, it’s clear when reading it they don’t really have the full shilling. Liber Xenologies is of course written by a blowhard Rogue Trader, who greatly overestimates his actual level of knowledge and insight.

Yet both are of worth as sources to us Nerds, and both contain insights. We read them knowing it’s not the full truth, and can then discuss which of their theories have the most merit, and which might contain a particularly tantalising grain of truth.

And I want more. Far, far more. There’s nearly 35 years worth of 40K background to play around with. And the general level of ignorance in the setting is fertile ground for repackaging and putting a new spin on ancient stuff.

Imagine a Tau treatise on The Imperium. In the earliest days, there was a short story where they genuinely believed they’d killed Slaanesh. What else might they misconstrue? What sort of half truths and great big porky pies might they have been fed by those taken into the fold?

More ambitious? An Eldar volume of their mythic cycle tales. Or at least an Imperial translation of the same. I think a straight up Eldar version would be the most interesting, due to their already allegorical nature. Given they’ve been told for thousands of years, how much nuance might’ve been applied in the wrong place?

Ad Mech wise? A near Heretek study of Xenos vehicles, with literal cutaways.

Stick them up on Warhammer + as a series of articles. I’m subscribed, I don’t care

Just…..give me more!

I will join you in this! I also want more of these and I'd love to see GW do more made-to-order and just long term supplies of their existing and past books. I utterly hate that sometimes I have to pass on them because I just don't have the money in the 2 weeks every few years that some go on publication (or once for some).

I'm thrilled with the ones I do have, and yeah I'd love more!

Xenology was from the golden age of background books tbh. Xenology, the original Visions of Heresy, Liber Chaotica and Liber Necris (plus loads of smaller ones) were all awesome additions to the background that added so much lore in such a flavourful way.

Loved that Liber Xenologies was very much in the same vein, so rare for GW these days.

I too long for them to make more along those lines.

Perhaps also, if they’re not going to reprint the older ones, this would be an ideal thing to add to their lore vault section of W+. Not as nice IMO as the physical books, but definitely more worth the sub than last year’s WDs!

More of this type of thing would be great however I don’t think GW like to set the setting too much. Which is why the books you reference are from the point of view of imperial agents that don’t really know what they are talking about. It’s this whole, there is no canon thing.

I’d love a series of books about eldar history, from the point of view of a far seer

Or the audio guide to Trazyns museum

Trazyn’s audio guide would be absolutely hilarious!

‘The history of the galaxy in 100 objects’ with Trazan’s insane ramblings on all of them can only be brilliant!

Eldar history by a Farseer would also be great - perhaps Farseer Kelemon who did the lore snippets in the 2nd & 3rd Ed codicies?

I hope they do more like the Sabbat Crusade book that got released a while ago where they made a significantly updated version of the original book. Would be great to see that done with Xenology, Visions of Heresy, The Inquisition reference book, the 13th Black Crusade etc.

I don't get why about a year after that new Sabbat Crusade book they released it again but with a different coloured cover, though.

Cause its a good lore book and fans that were around the first time might not have all been able to afford/justify it at the time. Plus with the Gaunts Ghosts being an ongoing series of books there's always new fans who just weren't into them last year. Which is another good reason to keep source and lore books around. Someone who has no interest in Eldar in one year might be a big fan two years later and really regret not getting things like the art concept books and the like.

Trazyn’s Museum could be a cool idea for Warhammer+, with a new article added every month?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, and because Liber Chaotica were predominantly WHFB based?

Book of Lorgar, please. Perhaps with a companion volume of Lectitio Divinatus. Because that would rock massive monkey ‘nads.

It also caused a massive stir at GW about what authors were allowed to do, resulting in far more oversight in fiction works lest people write whatever they feel like.

If memory serves, it was also around the time when Black Library fiction became quite closely linked with the model releases, which they do seem to have broken away from now.

And with Liber Xenologies (though admittedly linked to a release) I’m hopeful we will see more.

Wouldn't mind more source books. Also wouldn't mind more Imperial Armour-style supplements that are light on rules and heavy on background. With 10,000+ years worth of Imperium, there are plenty of conflicts to cover and discuss the history of. Shoot, do an Imperial Armour: the Beast Arises set of 2-3 books.

I agree, wholeheartedly. I think GW was at its most creative when it was role playing while composing their books. The old codices were packed with this type of material. It created an immersive experience and encouraged creativity. I love the idea of reading a collection of imperial sources from various authors trying to make sense of various Xenos.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love
