People do it with Guild Ball minis all the time, thinking resin is plastic. Drives me nuts as this sort of imprecision is precisely what feths with people's expectations.

Although in this instance, I doubt there's many who'd be dropping the cash needed to buy a FW one without knowing exactly what they're getting.

Seriously. With like three or four different forces. Maybe even be able to buy all the supplement books/annuals for the edition, too.

It is one of the few fw titanic models actually reasonable in terms of points/power level

Good point. I wasn’t meaning he could get fancy stuff like the faction dice though.

Having a YT channel with a third of a million subscribers sure doesn't hurt either.

Was it a straight sale or was he donating any of the proceeds to anything? That can have a big influence on the price something can go for.

At the same time a lot of rare stuff on ebay goes for pennies because its never marketed enough before the sale. Several months of building nad marketing certainly means that by the time it went up for sale; people would have noticed it. So that can easily skyrocket the amount of money it will go for.

The article refers to the "plastic" TH that can currently be bought from FW.

The model in question here is a Limited edition, all white metal thunderhawk that comes in it's own wooden box for the parts. It's super heavy. It was made as a promotional material in the 90s and isn't really meant to be a tabletop item.

I think in the videos he said it was about 6400 USD. Needless to say, it required a few weeks to sand and get to fit together correctly, then he painted it on the channel. I would say the 35,000 is probably just a cherry on the top of the multiple you tube videos with 500k views each.

He definitely made back his money on this project.

That is my understanding of it as well. If true it does seem a bit dishonest... having said that I can imagine once he finished painting such a colossal model he found that there was nowhere to store it and found it too precious to game with. With that in mind I guess selling it would be the best thing to do. Could be that just wanted it to paint.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

Ignoring the financial aspects, its fully possible that for him the hobby is building and painting and that display has a lesser appeal to him. Heck for most of us "display" means that we have it on a shelf in the house, which is mostly just so that we can easily pick it up and keep it dust free.

If you are lucky enough to have a local store with a display case you MIGHT get to put something inside it for a while. Though in general after a week or two everyone who hobbies there will have seen it.

So display can be a bit lack-luster as an aspect, esp once you've taken photos to share with your online friends. Then its just a thing in the corner and perhaps you don't get enough joy out of just "owning" it.

Ah... no? I watched the videos about it, and his take was a 'if the money gets raised I'll buy and paint it' or some such. I certainly don't remember him claiming it was a dream mini or anything.

Of course, I could be wrong. Tell me which of his video it was in so I can go back and re-watch it.

I dunno if he does anything for income else at this point, but it seems like painting minis is basically his job, so holding on to stuff probably makes less sense than selling it off.

He also just bought a Manta recently, which is $1700, weighs more than the metal Thunderhawk and is waaaay bigger. Then made a video that mostly just complains about how it's all warped, lol.

Yep, though it only appeared to be some warping of very thin parts which would pretty much straighten themselves if you bunged them in some hot water for a few seconds.

Yeah, I don't remember him saying that. It was more a case of him giving us a glimpse at a collectors model that isn't seen around much anymore, and then detailing what a massive pain in the neck it was to build and paint. I'm not shocked at all that he sold it. It's a massive piece of Games Workshop wargaming history, but as an actual miniature it's hilariously impractical and silly. Sell it, plough the funds back into the channel (or buy a car, I don't care) or whatever. He's a youtuber, he documented the whole thing on youtube, so what difference does it make for the rest of us as viewers as to whether or not he kept it?

Just as with Games Workshop themselves, some people just seem to want to be annoyed about something.

He says it in the first five seconds of the 'why im selling it' video but he also said he's not a collector and isn't bothered about keeping it.
