Lots of fun stuff this time around. I'm going to have to break up my comments into two or three posts as I find time.

Nevelon: Another lovely addition to you 'Nids, assuming you can have Genestealers in a Tyranid army in this addition. Using a similar palette on the Magus is a great way to tie such a different model into the rest of the force.

Me: I think I mentioned this when I submitted the photos, but as much as I like the Broken models when they are finished, they are a PITA to assemble. I probably have ten sets of arms clipped from the sprue and then rejected because they didn't match the guns very well. Customisability is great and all, but getting these guys together was like a game of Tetris. The RAFM guy was like a breath of fresh air after that.

KidCthulhu: Your matching pink for the jacket and shoes really sells the youth of the model. Bonus points for getting the shoes to look like Converse.

the_balloon_dog: A very painterly entry. It looks like a John Blanche painting in 3D.

Captain Brown: Your gang looks like a gang, with everyone dressed in gang colors. The pale skin makes them look like they live in a hiveblock or underground where they never see light of day. Was that intentional?

Supershandy: I enjoyed seeing your WIP photos. I particularly like the soft edges on the different greens and browns of the cloak and hood.

Graphite: I don't have the skills or the patience to work on scale models, so I admire anyone who can finish something to this level. The grimy grey makes the model look like it's seen some action.

Freya: The bright orange OSL and the near-black of the rest of the model are a striking combination. Is that airbrush or hairy brush?

Flinty: Another nice scale model. Seeing your work almost makes me want to invest in an airbrush.

lifeafter: I like the grimy, Blanchitsu look of this model. I feel like the plasma gun could be darker, to contrast with the glow from the plasma coils.

Jamie Shred: A couple of solid units that would make me think twice about advancing across the tabletop. Good on you for not drilling the barrels-- I don't do that either, mostly because I can never get the drill centered properly.

Mr Nobody: One can never have enough goblins to pester D&D characters. The basing could probably benefit from some putty to blend the integral bases with the plastic ones. As it is, the ring of green around the rock kind of draws the eye away from the models.

I'll add some more comments when I can. For now, it's off to the dentist for me!

Now showing Samurai Marines!

Josh, thanks for the comments. I really enjoy the blanchitsu style. I agree that I could have gotten the plasma gun darker. This was my first time ever trying OSL and I think I went a little overboard on the gun. It's a fine line between osl and just straight up painting the gun blue. I'll keep working at it!!

It's a c-c-c-combo!

I used an airbrush for the base acrylics using magenta mixed with a little violet and then I popped some lighter turquoise for the cold lights. Then I used oils to finalize my lights and shadows on the robes and some kimera acrylics for the armor and NMM. After that it was an airbrush of white ink on the blade, making sure I got a little overspray on the model. Then 4 different inks starting with magenta and going brighter. Then back to oils where I finalized the osl using yellows and pinks.

In retrospect I could have saved a step and just gone with oils at the very end but I don't think it hurt too bad in the order I did it. I'll admit, I have been kinda lazy on painting lately so I just (again) pushed for high contrast using color theory and didn't bother to do a lot of cleanup work or textures that I could have done had I taken the time.

On the other hand, you seem to have taken that NMM and knocked it outta the park! Also good job keeping the vibrant red. Surprisingly difficult to do and perhaps underrated. In fact, all your colors retained vibrance through your process it seems. Either you mixed single pigment colors or you didn't mix much at all and either way, it takes a certain knowledge to succeed in that. Well done.

My votes : DV8 - never a dull moment with your art. The finish is on point and though I don't understand the model choice, it is very clean with nice use of warm lights and cold shadows. Even got some triadic crispness in there. Spicy work!

Josh, well done dude. Again, nice NMM and vibrant tones with defined lights and an interesting color scheme. Love you dude!

Flinty, crispy and difficult to do. A large model? Yes. No base? Yes. Nailed it, also yes.

I wish I could vote for more people but I'll get carried away if I do. Thanks for keeping on putting your hearts out there guys, gals and nonbinary pals! You are the one community where I feel like part of the family and I love you all!

I completely agree. Every model I paint is, ultimately, a gaming piece, and will spend most of its time at arm's length.

This was my fourth visit for this particular problem, and should be the last. Thankfully, the national health insurance in Japan keeps out of pocket expenses reasonable.

Wow, that's an even more involved process than I thought. What scale is the model?

I'm still plugging away at NMM. Sometimes it just comes together, other times it takes me multiple attempts to get passable results.

Time for morning coffee and some more comments

Midget Gems: I remember how exciting it was to finally have a plastic grot kit after so many years of waiting. These guys turned out great, although I think the lighting in the photo washes out a lot of your shading and highlighting. If/when you do another set, you might want to have some different colors in their uniforms to add some variety.

Aelyn: I'm not familiar with these models. What line are they from? The shared "uniform" broken up by individual spot colors was an interesting choice. You can tell that they are part of the same team, as it were, while being able to easily tell them apart at a glance.

ms07b3: Is it a model? A diorama? A terrain piece? It's all three! The icicles really add to the sense of age, like Nagash has been sitting there for years. The adventurers sneaking around on the base is a fun little surprise as well.

Paradigm: It's rare to see orcs that aren't green on Dakka. I like the warm colors, especially the skin tones.

Vejut: I always enjoy seeing your take on these Oathsworn models. The bright colors just scream "swashbuckler!", and I like your basing as well.

Gulgog TufToof: This is a great model. The stripe on the pants is a nice little detail. He would probably benefit from having more variation in the browns.

queen_annes_revenge: This is unfinished? I'm curious about your recipe for NMM copper. I've been trying, but my attempts just look brown.

Turaxa: Cool, crazy cultists. The single wide, staring eye on the guy with the rifle is freaky. Your eyes are looking good, but I think they would benefit from having darker eye sockets around the white.

SmallChanges: Those are some bold color choices, as is appropriate for a follower of Slaanesh. I'm not completely sold on the weathering. I feel like the wear should be happening more around the joints or seams in the armor.

Viterbi: I like the dull magenta you used instead of the usual bright red. Also, the guns look great, like they've seen a lot of use.

Ezki: The shared colors make these models feel like a unit, while the bright spot colors make each model an individual. I like the rusty metal bases as well.

Rybrook: Giving these guys the same coats really sell the "gang" feel. NIce work on some very old models. These are classic Necromunda, right?

Well, the family is waking up, so it's time to start my day. I'll add some more individual comments as I find the time. Again, stellar work, one and all!

@Josh - it took a while (and a range of YouTube tutorials) to get the feel for it, but I really like using it on larger surfaces. Also, it turns out I like masking tape and stencils…

Your broken just really pop. So vibrant. Lovely work.

@ Freya - too kind. I knew Revan was subtle and demanding, but that is a heck of a process there. However the results speak for themselves!

Lots of lovely work this month, but I’d like to call out Ezki. Love the Escher. The bright but slightly faded colours work really nicely, and the fletching brings some great spot colours.

It's an odd size and I'm not entirely certain what it would be considered as I 3d printed it myself. It's about 40mm tall so It's not tiny but maybe a little bigger than a terminator?

NMM is always hit or miss... I'm just finally figuring out gold xD

I voted for 7 or 8 entries, but the two that stood out to me were;

Para’s orcs, because your painting style really suits that kind of organic model and they really come across as something “real”. Most people’s orcs/Orks have a somewhat cartoonish streak to them, even if they’re trying to be more grounded (mine included!), but these just look like they walked out of an ancient war party.

Supershandy’s Wunn-Too, because it’s JUST SO FLUFFY! Seriously, great texture and the camouflage is nicely done too

Thank you very much!

The camo came out far better than I expected

JoshinJapan - I really liked the colours you picked for these, the difference in contrast really makes them stand out in all the right ways

Graphite - Still in awe as to how people make scale models look so good

Freya - Awesome OSL effect, adds to the dark theme nicely

Flinty - Great colour scheme, nice to see something different!

Aelyn - A nice, clean job with some great colour choices to offset the grey armour

Paradigm - I always like seeing non green orks and these are no exception, excellent work on the cape as well

Tallandra - Never seen these minis before but your paint job has made me want to go and look into them a bit more

DV8 - Nice, clean and well excuted, really should up my own basing game to be honest!

Tyranid Horde - The Green and White classical look is so much better with some chipping!

Great work from everyone this month, you should all pat yourselves on the back

So for copper I usually base with rhinox hide, then do random mixes of mournfang brown, troll slayer orange and bugmans glow. You can use cadian fleshtone for bright highlights too. I'm quite free with my NMM painting. I just mix stuff on the pallet and push it around the model until it works.

Thanks. Trying to make orcs look halfway 'real' while keeping the Warhammer/DnD style rather than going more of a LotR route has been something I struggled with for years, but with these it just clicked. There's still green as the main colour in most of the skin tones, but yellowy highlights and brown/purple ink all over for shading gives them that leathery, thick-skinned look while still being recognisable as orcs rather than, say, ogres or half-giants. The minis helped too, they're from Tytan Troll Miniatures and my favourite thing about his sculpts is that they have just enough detail to be characterful without being cluttered (another issue I often find with orcs), whixh makes the simpler tchniques just work nicely and lets me focus on colour over technique.

There are a few more in the warband now if anyone wants a group photo next time I have them out.

Oh. and it goes without saying, but a big thanks to Nevelon for stepping in this round as Real Life once again rears its ugly head and leaves me with no time.

Lots of great entries yet again, but I'm gonna limit myself to five votes:

Tyranid Horde: Just overall great work, from the small gems to the lighting to the way the blade looks. Personally I think that the blue lighting effects could be even stronger, but that's just preference.

MobileSuitRandom: Interesting combination of models, with very different colour schemes. But both the darker colours of the Marine and the stronger colours of the Genestealer work very well for the models.

SmallChanges: Very dynamic pose with the weapons, and a good and very clean paintjob. Some more highlights and edge highlighting would really push the model imo.

Paradigm: Nice to see some different (sorta more oldschool?) orcs for a change. Paintjob looks very natural and is a great fit for these models imo.

ms07b3 : Impressive. A massive entry that's just well done all the way. From the really good ice effects to the details on the adventurers. The adventurers seemed like a small extra at first glance, but really show how big this thing is.

@Supershandy: I found those by chance, they're from Dark Sword Miniatures. Some of the anthropomorphic figures they have look sorta goofy imo, but the series these two belong to is great.

Going through and voting in the gallery I took a closer look at Tyranidhorde’s wraithseer, that’s an astounding piece of work. So many little details that don’t jump out, but lend to the whole; the subtle OSL around the “spirits” and the shading in the spiritstones particularly.

One of the things I enjoy most about these painting challenges is getting and giving comments. Not necessarily critiques or advice (although those are helpful and welcome), and not necessarily praise. Something simpleb ut concrete, such as "I like the way color A contrasts with color B," or "Maybe you should have darker shadows on those boots" or comments of that nature really help me reflect on the models I painted, and improve the next batch. With that in mind, one last batch of comments for everyone:

Tallandra: You made a great choice on the Kitsune fur. It's tempting, I think, to paint foxes somewhere on the orange specturm (I blame Disney), but IRL they're just brown. The ones here are, anyway. Did you use the same greens on both models? The bard's pants and the assasin's top look almost the same, but the other colors combine to make the models feel quite distinct.

MobileSuitRandom: A pair of very different models. Cypher's dark, dare I say drab, colors suit the character well. The blue, orange, and purple on the Genestealer shouldn't work together, but somehow they do. I particularly like the GS's knife-- the brown midtone makes it seem like it's seen some action.

Jadenim: The bright spot colors really stand out against the metal and/or gray covering most of the model. I'm more drawn to the fleshy pink on the CSM, probably because it's grosser. The glowiing hex patterns on the bases is a nice touch-- it took me a while to spot the reddish lines, but once I did, the effect became so much better to me.

DV8: There's so much going on with the model that it's hard to take it all in from one angle. I like the red pipe wrench, and the dog looks just so happy. The dwarf is removable-- does this mean the model will see some action on the tabletop?

Maharg: This model only has three colors-- skin, brown, and grey-- plus steel/silver, but the clean brushwork and depth of shading keep it interesting to look at. The pool of slime on the base is a nifty little detail.

Pariah Press: These guys throw off a sweet, oldschool WHFB vibe. The freehand shields are delightful-- did you use a brush or a pen for the lines? I feel like the blade on the polearm could use some shading on the various angles or curves to define it better.

Arakasi: Lots of grots this month. The green and orange are a truly striking combination. What did you use? The only orange I have is really bright, while this one is a lot more subtle.

MangoChutney: Your goblin looks great-- I like the potion bottle (?) at his waist. I wish the photo were larger, though, so I could see more of the model.

Tyranid Horde: A lovely model. Not as "woody" as some of the other stuff you've posted, but the little fire sprites are a nice touch. I like the very very subtle weathering, as well.

As always, stellar work by everyone this month. Let's keep it up!

JoshInJapan,

For the freehand shields, I just blocked in the colors with acrylics, then used a fine felt-tip pen for the lines. Quick and easy!

Thank you! Although this guy's "display" base is decidedly a little more cluttered than the rest of the army, it still sells the desert wasteland vibe I'm aiming for so simple in this case is better!

For sure! I had a hard time figuring out the right angles to submit for the 6 photographs. The Halfling is removable, and is used as my counts-as Gotrek for my Kharadron "Junkforce" Overlords army, for the rare occasions I get out to play Age of Sigmar.

Whoops, hit Submit before I added my own comments! My 3 votes, in no particular order other than post order:

Freya - Revan

Really cool OSL, although the relative value of his hand and gauntlet closest to the blade is almost identical to the brightest part of the base of the blade. General rule of OSL is that the light souce should be brighter in value than the reflected light. Good way to check is to take your image and drop it to grayscale to do a value check.

Ezki - Escher Gangers

Very cool; lots of character to the models and I love that each one has different spot colors to help differentiate them without veering too far away from the general earthy color scheme they all have.

Tyranid Horde - Wraithseer

I'm a sucker for Beil-tan colors, so this just tickles me the right way. I think you could use some more precision in some of the highlighting, but you can get away with it because it adds to the rough, worn finish of the surface. Just a preference thing I suppose. Also, OSL on the hand, same comment as Revan. Your light source (the base of the fire) should be brighter than the reflected light.

QAR - Leman Russ (Unfinished)

Honorable mention. Really good start, although not much to add since it's unfinished. Could've just lied to me, QAR, and you might have gotten my vote

Really cool to see you still continuing commenting on all entries JoshInJapan, appreciate it! It was unintentional at first with the washed out purple on the grots, but I wanted to tie them a bit to my Imperials (they are not only rebels, but apparently traitors too ) and the purple Contrast color made that effect very easy.

It looks like we might have a three-way tie for first place!

JoshInJapan wrote:Turaxa: Cool, crazy cultists. The single wide, staring eye on the guy with the rifle is freaky. Your eyes are looking good, but I think they would benefit from having darker eye sockets around the white.

Thanks for the comment. I'll try the black-lined socket technique on this month's entry, the slightly larger head on a 54mm model should make it easier for my first attempt.

Freya wrote:After that it was an airbrush of white ink on the blade, making sure I got a little overspray on the model. Then 4 different inks starting with magenta and going brighter. Then back to oils where I finalized the osl using yellows and pinks.

The heat effect on the weapon here would look great on one of these mechas. What were the other three ink colours that you used, and were the coats of ink applied one on top of the other or side-by-side along the length of the beam?

Comments for the comment god!
  • Nevelon: I like the way that you managed to use the same colour palette on the magus and the 'stealers, even though they are quite different figures.
  • JoshinJapan: The shading and highlights on Mr Belt-and-braces are particularly crisp, and I like the pale yellow on the yellow jacket guy.
  • the_balloon_dog: A very blanchesque entry, I like it.
  • Supershandy: The texture on the fur is great. Is it all brush strokes?
  • Graphite: I think you explained the inspiration for this in the competition thread. I didn't recognise the thing it's referencing, but it's always nice to see nods to the lore and other "easter eggs" incorporated into models.
  • Freya: Just in time for the remake being announced! This is wonderfully atmospheric, the OSL is very good.
  • Jadenim: I tried a similar basing style last month, but yours is better; I may have to pinch it
  • DV8: Colourful without being overwhelming. I like the way that you have worked the spot colours into lots of little places. My only criticism would be that the black rim of the removable base is very conspicuous among the yellow sand, but otherwise it's great.

  • Well done to everyone who entered, and thanks as always to Paradigm for running the challenge and to Nevelon for stepping in with this month's vote.

  • It is indeed, there's a picture in the WIPs I put up that has the colours used from the shadow layer to the very top layer. Didn't take too long to be honest, it was just knowing when to stop

Thanks Turaxa! It’s an adaptation of Duncan Rhodes method for the Blackstone bases, but using hexes, rather than just random lines (because Hexagons are the Bestagons.)

Thanks, Nev, Para and MG for bringing us these rounds and keeping things going, very much appreciated!

Amazing entries this month again and as it's been a while since I provided any comments, I have them below. For any with linked gallery images I've also dropped a vote on those.

Thanks very much as well to Shadow Walker, Supershandy, Tallandra, Jadenim, JoshInJapan and DV8 for your comments and feedback!

Nevelon - Genestealers and Magus - Great theming this month going for the classic GSC rebels. I enjoy the touches of green and red across the minis, and the old Magus sculpt I'd hazard saying that it's better or at least more characterful than the newer minis.

JoshInJapan - Broken - These guys look great, and your brushwork is very skilful, bringing the minis to life. I especially like the cloth around the gun barrels, very nicely done.

KidCthulhu - Pint-sized Anarchist Girl - Nailed the theme of this month and the comic is very entertaining and tells a fun story. I like the shading on the clothing and the colour palette is well done.

the_balloon_dog - +++Unidentified Subject+++ - This one caught my eye this month, I had a good investigation as to what your base model was, and you've made a very grim dark marine. The streaking and cracks on the right shoulder pad draw my eye a lot and it's detail like that I enjoy.

Captain Brown - Delaques Gang - Great looking gangers! I like how those leather jackets and pouches are painted, nice subtle highlighting so they don't look flat, and they all look fantastic as a unit.

Supershandy - Wunn-Too - A classic rebel! Very characterful entry and the camo is suitably Ewok, as is his fur. My only gripe is that the gloss black rim is a little distracting but overall, a well painted and themed entry!

Graphite - Rouge 1 – Great looking speeder, with nice recess shading and decal use. Only think I’d like to see are a few directional chips or streaking from the airflow moving over the craft.

Freya – Revan – A stand out entry for me this month, a great character choice and the contrast between your reds and blue tones are lovely and add a lot of atmosphere to the mini.

Flinty - A-Wing – Another stand out for me, big fan of A-Wings and this is no exception. Perhaps a little heavy on the preshade for my preferences but nonetheless a super cool model with some fantastic weathering like it has seen both atmosphere and space combat.

lifeafter - Safety First Plasma Gunner – Great take on a classic meme. I like the ultra-bright plasma effect that contrasts with the grim dark nature of the paintjob, very cool!

Jamie Shred - Eradicators and Whirlwind – Great set of eradicators this month, although in contrast to what Josh says, drill yer barrels! I like the heat effect on the barrels and the whirly is looking solid.

Mr Nobody – Goblins – Nice little band of goblins, I like the earthy tones you’ve used and the touch of weathering on the shield works well. The bright green grass is a little bright for the minis but overall great work!

Midget Gems - Rebel Grots – Great looking grots with some cool bits thrown in to spice them up and the basing is top notch. I like how these fellas don’t look cowardly at all and have some resolve to them, fitting of the theme.

Aelyn - heroes rebels of Ulfenkarn – Great job on such a detailed set of minis, I especially like how you’ve linked their accent colours to their base rims. One minor criticism would be to add a little bit of interest to break up the minis from their bases.

ms07b3 - "Let us skip this boss" – Very impressive diorama/vignette. Nagash looks very imposing on his throne and the icy nature gives me WoW Lich King vibes. Not a fan of pin-up style minis but they’re very well painted and fit the scene you’re setting.

Paradigm – Orcs – a sweet trio of Orcs and like the above entry, give me proper WoW vibes by straying away from the usual green skin tones you see in Warhammer. Big standout for me this month too.

Vejut - Otter Pirate – Great entry and your pirate looks like a proper swash buckler. I like your saturated colours and the small reflections on his sword is a nice detail.

Gulgog TufToof -Gold Toof da Flash (Git!) – Liking the darker green skin used for your flash git here and I kind of feel like he needs a gold peg leg! Lots of cool little details that make the mini come to life, great job.

queen_annes_revenge – Leman Russ (unfinished) – A stellar entry even in its unfinished state. Not sure what I can offer as feedback but the difference between the photos here and the finished ones on your Instagram is noticeable and are worth checking out!

Turaxa – Chaos Cultists - Great bunch of cultists that have a cohesive look despite their dishevelled appearance. The purple skin tones are creepy and suitably chaos-y.

SmallChanges – Emperor’s Children Primaris – Always a fan of a well weathered marine and that provides a nice contrast to the expected clean and crisp lines of an Emperor’s Child. The weather looks good and makes sense. Would have liked to see the lenses painted and tubing black! Great metallics too.

Viterbi - Rebellious Grots – Won’t complain about more grots this month! Very nice icy snow which compliments their skin and clothes nicely. I like the blood effects on the blade, it has a nice grim look to it.

Ezki - Escher Gangers – More excellent gangers. The metallics look sweet and the vibrant tones add lots of visual interest to them. The gun wielding ganger is perhaps my favourite of the bunch.

Rybrook - Delaque Gangers – Great looking gang that are full of character. Really like the blue you’ve used for their denim and the ganger on the right is my favourite of the bunch.

Tallandra - Kitsune Scoundrels – Lovely sculpts that you’ve made a fantastic job of. Love the bright colours and the details you’ve added are nice to find, especially on the bard’s instrument.

MobileSuitRandom – Rebels – Always enjoy the cinematic scenes you set up for your entries, a classic combo of DW vs GSC. Both are very well painted with lovely detailing.

Jadenim – Traitors – Bright gold and purple, great combo and one I really like. The marine’s pauldron is very creepy and meshes well with his colour scheme and the traitor guardsman looks really cool with the blood effects and red details.

DV8 - Hjarnan the Tall with his faithful companion, Dog – This one stole the show for me on what seems to be a consistent basis now. I love your painting style and your entries are lots of fun to investigate. My only offering of feedback is adding some pigments or weathering to the bike’s radiator as the landscape may kick up a lot dust from the front wheel.

Maharg – Ratskin – Clean and crisp as usual from you, great work on skin tone and the leather with all of their subtle differences. Great work on his eyes, they add a lot to the intent of the mini.

Pariah Press - Outlaws and Marauders – Lovely looking warband and I really like the freehand emblems you’ve got on their shields, they’re really nice touches in bringing the minis to life. Great scheme!

Arakasi - Rebellious Grot – Lovely work, his skin looks really nice and the orange and red is nicely shaded and highlighted. The teeth are a nice breakup in the model being quite grimy!

MangoChutney – Goblin – Lovely entry and really nicely painted, especially the reddened nose. This month has been great for all the different greenskin recipes! I’d love a larger photo as I fear some detail is lost in the final photo.

Tyranid Horde - Wraithseer Baralon Whisperwind – This one wasn’t my highest effort as I was pushing to get it done for a tournament that I entered last month so I may go back in and improve on some of the things brought up this month like some of the highlighting and OSL. Overall pretty pleased and got to paint on some texture to take away from the overtly airbrushed look you see from some Craftworlds minis.
