Getting into the new Necromunda and trying to figure out which rulebook to get. Is the stand alone Hardcover book the most up to date or would it need the FAQ? I recall reading somewhere the version in Hive War is the most up to date with all the changes from errata/FAQs. Even with the base rulebook do you need the Hive Wars books to add rules for vertical and such?

My understanding is that the standalone Rulebook, the Dark Uprising rulebook and the Hive War rulebook are the same core rules once you take the errata into account. All three books allow for both Zone Mortalis and Sector Mechanicus terrain. There's not really any important distinction, rules-wide; you can include solid walls and doors on a Sector Mechanicus setup if you want. Some scenarios and Tactics cards are only for one or the other, that's all.

In addition to the core rules, the Rulebook has the Dominion Campaign. Dark Uprising has the Uprising campaign rules and gang creation rules for Palanite Enforcers and Corpse-Grinder Cults Hive War has no campaign rules, but does have basic gang creation rules for the siz House gangs, allowing you to use any models from the six basic House gang box sets.

All rulebooks are currently 'valid'. Hive War is the most up to date, Dark Uprising next, hardback the least.

Some stuff in the FAQ are included in the newer rulebooks, but not all. So you will need to reference the FAQ even with Hive War.

Furthermore, the rulebooks contain some changes which are not in the FAQ. If you use the hardback rulebook you'll be missing on some minor changes that are included in the later rulebooks.

This is a fairly common thread; the devs have stated on stream that they use the errata as a last resort, they prefer to just print the rule correctly "next time" instead. This is incredibly frustrating as players because in order to get the most up to date rules you need to keep appraised of every publication, including White Dwarfs which might not be directly relevant but still include these corrections.

That lie has gotten a long way! The Hive War book has ridiculous mistakes and is a completely separate game in terms of gang structure and several universal rules (specifically anything related to credits and/or XP).

All books have:
- errors that have never and will never be FAQ'ed.
- new/unique info not found in any other books.

This question turned out to be a bit of a downer.

I can't really recommend any books (unless you want them for the fluff/artwork).

Luckily there are fan made compilations that solve much of the issues with the official books.
