They only had one unit and got moved to Legends.

Just run them as Space Marines and pick a Chapter that gives you the play style you want. Mine are Salamanders for the flamers all day feel.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"

Yeah, they got canned. Only stuck around as long as they did before going the way of Doomrider, Squats, Snotlings et al is cus space marines.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

They'd make a pretty cool Kill Team.

I brought this up awhile back actually, but one really good and thematic way to proxy them would be using the rules for the Deathwatch marines.

1) State before any game that EVERY unit in your army has a stormshield (obviously in your lists: everyone has to have a stormshield) this is to approximate the old very high invuln save they used to have (Was 3++ at one point if I recall).

2) The DW boltgun with their special ammunition does a good job of replicating their old "ignores cover" rules

3) Deathwatch teleportation approximates their old teleportation rules.

4) LotD used to have an unusually high number of special weapons, which deathwatch can also do.

5) Heck: even the NAME is similar!

...so, in summary, they DO work quite well as proxies in this regard :-)

I the remember back in 2008 or so when they had full on army rules. I think it was an HQ, a dreadnought, and their version of Tac squads.

I'd love them to comeback as their own mini-faction. Release a White Dwarf with basic rules for them.

Make them infantry only firstborn marines but with Acts of Faith, Sacred Rites, and Shield of Faith. Representing the fact they're closer to Imperial angels (like Celestine) than regular marines.
