Does anyone run Vanguard, Spearhead or Outrider detachments?

And does anyone run elite lists without troops?

I'm a big fan of elite units, but does anyone actually forgo command benefits and ObSec to run purely elite lists?

Patrol + Outrider these days .

As an ork player I run more infantry specialists than troops and it's perfectly fine to avoid troops completely. Not all of them are actually elites as Stormboyz are FA, but I'm currently playing Kommandos, Burnaboyz and Meganobz which are all elites. Plus lots of vehicles. I'm still keeping 2x10 boyz but only because of the specialists mobs bonus.

I've always been a fan of vehicles based + elite oriented ork lists with little to no troops, and now I'm glad they're fairly competitive.

Obj sec can definitely be skipped and 2x Outriders or Spearhead/Vanguard + Outrider are solid choices for orks.

The reason I ask is that I want to put together a fluffy GK Purifiers (Vanguard) detachment. As a Chaos Knights player I'm used to playing games without ObSec, and paying s few CP to run the units I want doesn't seem a massive penalty. That said, my Ultramarines are a more traditional Battalion detachment, but I want to try something a bit different this time.

Yes. I do this plenty often with my Necrons. Because many of my favorite units in this force are elites.

This particular Crusade? The only troops even on my roster are a single unit of Spindel Drones (a 3pl unaligned troop choice from the Blackstone Fortress game). And they don't always make the cut as far as what to bring in later games..... Their main use to me is simply being 1pl cheaper than warriors in the initial Crusade weeks when I'm required to field a Combat Patrol & thus need that 1 troop.

I've had zero issues concerning obsec.

I've used the elite detachments plenty with Necrons, lots of lists worth testing that aren't big on troops. Thousand Sons not so much since Rubrics are definitely worth taking in battalion-size quantities.

Same as blackie, patrol and outrider for most of my ork games. If it weren't for the patrol being free and the extra specialist mob, I'd probably also skip troops completely.

For DG I usually do bring troops, but they have many good stratagems you want to use your CP on and using plague marines is kind of the point of playing the army in the first place.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

I think a TS Vanguard with SOT's has legs, but primarily because they have ObSec.

Eh, I've tried a Vanguard detachment using Chosen instead of CSM, but the problem is that the Vanguard is 3CP, and all of my dreadnoughts and all of the tanks I use except the Achilles cost 1CP apiece themselves, so I'm quickly down to 6 starting CP, which just doesn't work very well for Night Lords. Patrol + SHAD has been working well since the change to the SHAD in the latest CA though.

Absolutely.
Mind you, they are Deathwing and ravenwing detachments, so obsec not a problem.

I like both Inquisition and Sisters of Silence, so yeah... Vanguard is the only detachment you can actually build for those forces.

When I bring them, they are never the only detachment in the army.

Outside of Ravenwing Outriders and Deathwing Vanguard (which negates the negative since I often get CP refunded and gain obsec), I have run an Eldar vanguard with wraith units.

I was working on a Spearhead double drop pod list with double Long Fangs in each and a Dreadnaught x4 castle... but ended up just going with a double Patrol (because battalion only gets 0-3 elites and heavies).

I do a lot of 1k point games and let me tell you: elite detachments ROCK at that point level.

True: it is rather hard to play objectives.

Also true: opponents have a much harder time dealing with things like all dreads and the like.

Also also true: only having to lug around a very small amount of models is super convenient!
