Hi all.

Sorry if this a silly question to you all. So I’m a newbie with warhammer 40K only just starting. So I’m thinking of building a space wolves army. So obviously some units are very clearly space wolves, however regarding some of the generic space marine troops ie intercessors etc, where do I find the info that tells me what is allowed in a space wolves army and not? Not bought codexes trying to avoid blowing a load of money in one go. Is it in the codexes?

Thanks.

It's in the Codex:

p.124 wrote:Space Wolves: The following units cannot be from the
Space Wolves Chapter (or any of their successor Chapters):
APOTHECARY; ASSAULT SQUAD; DEVASTATOR SQUAD; STERN GUARD
VETERAN SQUAD; TACTICAL SQUAD; VANGUARD VETERAN SQUAD.

Does that mean you have to call the devastators "long fangs" and not devastator?

A lot of the SW “special” units are just rebranded basic stuff with extra options/restrictions and rules. I’m not up on their latest iteration, but it used to be long fangs were devs, but could not take the extra bolter bodies, and the sarge had other options.

So someone who put together 4 guys with MLs and a sarge with a chainsword could probably be both kind of squads, but what’s legal between them is going to be a venn diagram.

It is an expensive hobby. If you can't afford or do not want to pay for the rules that you need, you might as well get out now.

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase.

IMHO there are few FLGS that don't have 'store copies' of unsealed Codexes and you may want to ask around. Also, in my experience Battlescribe is pretty good at telling you what is possible or not, though you won't be playing at full effectiveness without a codex as battlescribe doesn't list tactical stratagems.
