Subject: AoS New Faction Wishlist Thread!
|
|

Greetings folks,
So I thought I'd try to stir up a bit of discussion in the AoS forum by talking about something that everyone tends to have strong opinions on: New Factions.
What are some factions you would love to see? What are some themes you would love to see?
I'll start things off with a few fast-firing wants:
1) A united dwarf faction that can use all current dawi and a bunch of new ones. Let me unite the clans!
2) A Samurai faction. (I know I know: boo hiss!) What can I say: I like samurai.
3) A goblin technology based faction. Kinda like what they did with the KO, but with goblins! I'm picturing rows of gobo musketeers, ridiculous war machines, you get the idea.
Well, that's three, how about you? I'm sure you have at least a few faction ideas that have occurred to you at some time or another! Let's hear about them!

Mainly I want to see the Chaos Duardin, Gitmob Grotz, and Grotbag Scuttler armies. But in terms of wishlisting outright? Firebelly army! As a sub-group within Mawtribes to go alongside Gutbusters and Beastclaws.
Also dwarf anything, really.

Yes, yes, I've got the Legends lists....
I'd like to see the generic Grand Alliance factions of Order/Chaos/Destruction/Death re-instated as valid ways to build forces.
New? Techno-goblins in balloons etc.
New (that I'm sure we'll get): Fire & Water expansions to the Lumineth.

I was actually interested in the Kings before they killed Fantasy. The lore was pretty nifty. But then they killed fantasy so...

I'd definatly like to see spirtual sucessors to some of the old WFB armies. I mean we don't have a "order army guys, mounted knights on horse back" army, which strikes me as something that would be popular. give us our "knights in shining armor!" GW!

No reason to let that stop you as we do have that Legends PDF.

So much of what made Tomb Kings interesting for me was specifically tied to the Old World, I'm not sure an AoS version could do them justice.

I think it could...provided it's not just a 1:1 "Look, Egyptian Realmlords!" style of thing.
Though I also feel like the Ossiarch are a better version of the concept, so what do I know.

I wouldn't say Ossiarch are the same concept as Tomb Kings.
I don't think Tomb Kings would work in AoS without being a hollow "they're undead, but Egyptian!" semblance of their former selves. They just feel too constrained. An ancient, long dead empire of mummies works when they're a continent away but doesn't quite pull it off when they have to expand across the entire mortal realms.
As for wishlist:
Grotbag Scuttlers
Destruction Humans
Death Humans

Any sort of lore contrivance could be made to have something like Tomb Kings added in. Hell, they already do it!
The realms are a big place, and they were always here, just hiding!
Like Ossiarchs, Lumineth, Kruleboyz.
Some sort of swarm horde hivemind type army. Shake it up, make it Order: Tyranids as a subset of Sylvaneth.

I meant more that the archetype of what the Tomb Kings were doesn't fit in as a multi-realm player, unless it's something like "human worshippers of Nagash got turned into eternal undead mummies and liches during the Necroquake" or "there just so happens to be a bunch of cultures across all of the realms that all figured out the mummification ritual and also all use the same models despite being wholly removed from eachother"

Yeah, I dont see space for them. While Ossiarchs aren't the same, they have a LOT of overlap in terms of general aesthetics and mechanical flavour (how the army play feels).
Tomb Kings while cool are most likely done and dusted as far as Age of Sigmar.
Quite possible we see stuff for them in The Old World of course.

Settra returning leading a mortal Order faction with the same aesthetics and large constructs in opposition to Nagash could be fun.
If nothing else would be a cool Cities project for people.

As someone working on a Skaven army: updating resin to plastic would be a big one, but I'd also love to see Skaven rules for 40k just so I can run Magnus over with a Doomwheel.

I count them as the same thing at this point because once they sell out of metal backstock they switch to resin.

Would love to see some focus on Cities of Sigmar. A revamp of the line with a focus on your average Joe would be stellar. If they stayed in the same design space as recent one off characters then this would be an army I'd instantly drop money into.

Agreed. Maybe do a set of kits per realm to really crack it open what the realms typically look like and bring some variety into the game. Bonus points if the army comp matches the lore with mixed races instead of splitting them up by race.

I'd be a bit worried if they revamped cities of sigmar it could lead to the squatting of a number of old world mini's.

TOW has a game coming so I'd argue they'd get shuffled back where it makes more sense to have them and both games could see more unique stuff that best fit their respective settings.

Hmm. There's already a lot of factions out there. Yeah you could do a lot more with the basic elves and dwarves, but I'd love to see a faction that's based off of new species that haven't been explored.
A while back, a lot of people thought that the Kragnos stuff was heralding the 'Silent People' which were like a type of bug people? I'd love to see a mantis-like race, like the thri-kreen from DnD. It could be a great new Destruction faction to expand that territory beyond orks and giants.

1) New order humans unconnected to Cities of Sigmar.
2) Fimir
3) Destruction humans
4) some new variation of lizardmen for either chaos or destruction (particularly if Fimir will never see the light of day again, lol)

I caught my local GW store owner the other day telling a group that they were discontinued because Tomb Kings were "culturally offensive." I asked him if that was the case, why were Seraphon, who obviously are culturally based of South and Central American native cultures also not discontinued. No answer of course, but I found it interesting. If you don't know, why try to make up an answer? I would really like to see TK come back.

Didn't someone from GW admit that TK got dropped because they forgot to figure out how to include them in the setting?
As for a way to have them come back, making them undead from the Realm of Heavens and beyond Nagash's control since they're animated with a different sort of magic would be fitting.

I'm honestly not sure, I always thought it was because TK were just reskinned skelies and they didn't want two of the same army. But I've heard all kinds of stuff.
The truth, we may never know. But it might have just been that all the TK models were confiscated by the British Museum...since everything Egyptian belongs to them.

My impression was that Fantasy had too many factions that overlapped too much and even before End Times the Tomb Kings were a fairly neglected army with a cult following in the fanbase. Lot like how Necrons were languishing real hard for years before getting a codex near the end of 5th (or the start of sixth?).
I'm not sure one can be culturally offensive to cultures so far back in the distant past their own descendants don't really know them anymore. It's not like modern Egyptians identify with ancient Egyptians in the same way modern Nahua and Maya identify with their ancestors. And the Lizardmen actually put some cool twists on Mesoamerican and Inca aesthetics and are in a vague sense one of the 'good' factions in the setting so I'm not sure anyone was ever really offended by them or why they would be. I'd say the Lizardmen are an example of fantasy counterpart culture done very right cause the parallels are there but also a mound of original ideas that make the references mostly an homage rather than a bid to stereotypes.
