Hey there Dakka, i have a fun discussion topic. What is the worst reason you used to justify starting a new army? For me, it was boredom waiting for an army update. I started picking up 1k Sons despite having a massive back log of Death Guard, CSM, Eldar, a warhound titan, and an AoS army to build/paint. What's yours?

I guess it'd have to be along the lines of "In case I ever want to/get to play this game".
In that category I have:

Warmaster (Epic scale? Warhammer Fantasy) - I have the complete LE Kislev army.
We played a few small demo games at the shop of the time. There was some interest. A few months later GW advertised a on-line exclusive for Kislev. That's cool, if I'm going to build a tiny WHFB army I want it to be something I don't already have full scale.
Interest in this game in my area fizzled long before I ever got the 5lb bag of mixed pieces GW sent me sorted out. Seriously, they sent me an entire army deal poured loose into a plastic bag about size you'd get sugar in. No blisters, no inventory, just a sack of tiny metal pieces & bases..... It took FOREVER to sort out (and in some cases unbend).
It's been sorted, organized into units, & painted for many years now. It's never seen a game. Probably never will either as I'm the only person I know who owns any Warmaster nowadays....

Blood Bowl - I have a Lizardman team built & painted many years ago that's never seen a game.
Because there's always low lv mumblings at various local shops about running a BB league - wich never develop. If one does? I'm ready.

BFG - I have an unopened, still in shrinkwrap, BFG starter set (+ a few extra Chaos/Imp ships) in storage.
Why? Because we had this campaign all set to involve space battles followed by the ground war - that fizzled before I even got my stuff opened.
I had to go out of town for two weeks right when we were looking to start. One of the other guys was to teach the rest of the group BFG in that time & get things started. No problem, I already know the system. I'll make two forces & get added to wichever side needs another player when I get back. My forces will just be a week late in joining the battle. You know, warp storms & all.
Well....
I get home & discover that the entire campaign has been scrapped! :(
Turns out that the majority of the players, after playing several games of it, didn't find BFG to their liking at all.
And apparently there was then some serious last minute argument between a good # of players & the campaign organizer resulting in the plug being pulled on the whole thing. :( :(
Time & shops have passed & there's just never been any real interest in BFG.

Every time I have gotten bogged down in a project, seen something else and thought "oh that'd be easy to pump an army out for, I'll actually get a project done!", e.g. Tyranids/Necrons at various points over the last 20 years, bought in, and then realised I have no interest in those factions at all.

This has happened more times than I'd like to admit.

Starting a new army to keep things fresh is not a bad reason. Its a great reason! You learn new techniques of modelling, painting, list construction and play style. You build new neural pathways. Run with it.

I keep talking myself into starting a Primaris army only to remember that I don't really like playing vanilla Marines (I keep gravitating to Imperial Fists because I like how that yellow pops) all that much and should stick to just painting the occasional model when I get an itch to paint Marines again.

I'll probably make the same dumb choice when the Templar box goes up for pre-order as well, assuming GW puts it on "made to order" so I can actually order it.

I start looking for a new army when I have a new theme I want to explore.

Unfortunately, all the themes I want to explore in 9th are terrible.

Second latest army was Mechanized Eldar with lore that dramatically discouraged wraith units. This was so unfun to play I just blah.

Next latest.army is Mechanized IG, but it is equally terrible, just in different ways. So far I haven't given up, but eh.

I want mech infantry to work, because it sounds conceptually cool to me and is a departure from my usual Big Things (whether Baneblades or Keepers).

Other games I have had a bit more fun with. I have a pipe dream of playing Mech in Chain of Command, but can't decide between Armored Rifles (US), Panzer Grenadiers (Germany), Universal Carriers (UK), etc. etc.

I wanted to paint an army in a different colour - this tends to be the reason I buy any army.

Sometimes it was an easy pick:

Gold = Stormcast
Bronze = Custodes
Necrons = SIlver
Ghosty / Ethereal = Nighthaunt

But then for some is was more because they are the kind of army that would accept any colour scheme:

Tyranids = Blue and light brown
Primaris Marines = White (more of a light gray)
More earthy tones = Beastclaw Raiders
Dark Eldar = Orange
Imperial Guard = a mix between Axis and Allies from WW2 (Dark gray and Khaki)

The only exception to this rule was my Death Guard which is the only army I collected not for painting purposes but because I wanted to run a mostly-daemon engine army. I like painting these ones the least of any

***edit*** I should note that when I inevitably collect Tau, it will be a Jungle Green kind of theme with the bases to match.

I started a small AdMech army at the beginning of the 8th because I was annoyed with the 8th edition gakky terrain LoS and combat rules from the melee perspective.

My opponents were several kinds of shooty marines and chaos marines and didn't think much about terrain besides having something nice on the table. Meanwhile I was usually playing Nids or GSC, a short ranged/melee forces.

So I decided to build a list that would illuminate them with a generous application of phospor weaponry about both the value of a proper terrain, and also certain terrain issues that they didn't mind when they worked in their favor.

Liking the look of the special character models despite detesting most of the factions lore (mainly finding it fairly dull) and play style (third edition Eldar) and mostly disliking the look/aesthetic of the chaff models and the warlocks and farseers (aspect warriors were nice though).

In fact, looking back, it was mainly from flicking through white dwarfs and finally getting caught up in the hype of conversions of warlocks and farseers by a guy at my local GW store to have them have lightsabers and how they had a jedi like play style. Yeah, just a poor choice in general, Star Wars had a huge allure for me back then.

Glad I learnt from it though, every time I have the itch to do gundam Tau, this experience reminds me that I need to like the faction in general, and I hate almost everything about Tau

On the flip side, my primaris force that have heavy self made lore about them being an unforgiven chapter who are tasked by Azrael to maintain close ties with the inquisition to watch for fallen infiltration and perform black earth ops if members within the inquisition get too close to the truth, along with a paint scheme I enjoy painting and has enough variation across units so I do not get bored. As well as being able to indulge in marines with robes and other unforgiven iconography.

My second which is in full swing now is DKoK, but what will be based on an assault korp as opposed to the standard line infantry and bombardment doctrine. This also allows for fun conversions and the like, and again with a scheme I enjoy painting but is also easy and fairly quick for a large scale infantry count army.

I used to paint models for a living and bought a Dark Angels army after the release of one of their codexes to paint and sell. I then got a series of army commissions which meant I had to shelve the project so I put the Dark Angels in a box behind the sofa.

Several years later, after I decided I liked knowing I could pay my bills at the end of the month and got a "proper" job, I was having a clear out and rediscovered the army having completely forgotten I even owned it. I decided I might as well paint it up and keep it since I had it anyway.

So yeah, I literally started an army because I found it down the back of my sofa.

That is a fantastic reason to start an army!

When 8th came out my eldest son and I got back into 40K. He played Orks, but flipping through the Space Marines Index he fell on the Flesh Tearers. I grabbed a bunch of my old beat-up 2nd Edition Dark Angels from a tackle box, he got to work stripping/repainting, I added Seth for his birthday and voila - a "new" army had been started.

I started Blood Angels because that’s the transfer sheet that was included in my first RTB01 box

I started Ultramarines because I needed a break from red, and wanted another force if we had multiple factions on the field for out RT games (which we played more as a RPG)

I started Eldar because the newly released Falcon was (and still is) a sexy tank, and I have a soft spot for grav armor.

I started Deathwatch because they kept giving me shoulderpads in the commander/command/GK squad boxes and I had enough to put together a counts-as sternguard unit of them.

I started Tyranids because I had a government stimulus check in my pocket, contrast paints made it practical, I wanted to support my FLGS during a trying time, and was running out of things to get for my other armies. Plus they were always a pipe dream to do as a thematic foil for my Ultras.

Two armies come to mind.
i bought the Necrons army box when they first came out in plastic. Well, mostly plastic so 3rd or 4th edition? The thing is I didn't really want them I just didn't want another guy to get them, I know that sounds bad but if you knew him you might understand. Later after reading through the codex I realized if I played them no one would want to play against me. they seemed very OP to me at the time. weirdly I decided to trade them to the very guy I was trying to keep them from for another army to use as trade fodder. It was silly and a mistake, I probably lost money in the end but it seemed like a very good idea at the time. again if you knew the guy at that time and place you might not think I was being a jerk, even if I kinda was.
The justification in my head was this guy was a cheat that played obscure armies like the SoB list from the Chapter approved book to take advantage of people. He had a few other cheats as well. Still not a good decision on my part.

The second army would be Cadians.
I've had several IM armies over the lase 20+ years. One night I had a dream of owning 300 Cadian Infantry so I set about collecting that but it became massively overwhelming as I collected and collected. Never could get up to building and painting that army. Traded and sold it all away for I can't remember what now.

I will say though my current I army is almost 100% painted. Over 200 models painted! Just a few more to go.

Sigh, Yet another doomed attempt by man to bridge the gap between the material and spiritual worlds

I played Blood Angels for my first few years in the hobby because they were the canonical force in the starter box.

I later learned they were kind of silly space vampires, whereas the little bits of short fiction had made me think their main focus was being recruited from mutants from a wasteland like the Cursed Earth or Nu-Earth in 2000AD. When I found out they were all crazy vampires and not really normal space marines I lost a lot of my enthusiasm for them. Also, red was really tricky with the paints back then and my paintjobs always came out poorly.
So then I picked Crimson Fists because they looked cool and then when I read more about them I found out they were also weird in that they didn't have many normal marines but more veterans and new recruits. Sigh.

I've decided to just ignore the background now if I like a colour scheme!
Aside from that I don't regret any reason I had for collecting an army. It was always because I thought the concept, background or models were cool, which is a perfectly good reason to play an army in my view!

Stuck in the snow.

I started a small collection of Eldar that are collecting dust on my shelf after spending too much time playing with the Dawn of War 2 army painter and accidentally stumbling upon a reasonably priced Eldar Battleforce at Adepticon.

My plan was to covert some additional boxes of Guardians and Dire Avengers into other aspects for use in 7e Kill Team, but by the time I actually touch the models again we'll probably have all aspects in plastic...

Only bad reason I can think would be if it put you in financial difficulties. I had a chance a couple months ago to get a decent Scions army, 7 squads, 3 Valks and a Vulture for £200, which I reluctantly turned down.

I decided to get into Tau after seeing a pretty good deal online and a nice bit of tax refund.

Eldar army - I had just gotten a job that had me flush with cash, and I bought a "guest army" of Eldar (back when they were metal, just prior to release of Warp Spiders) for my brother so we'd be able to play.

He's never used them, nor have I.

Believe it or not, I started Dark Angels, my first love in 40k, mostly because that was what came in the 40k paint set way back when. Five push-fit Tactical Marines with Bolters, molded with DA icons on the shoulders. I still have them, and they are just as badly painted as when I first picked them up (only thing I've done to them since initially painting them is rebase them on 32mm bases). Kind of a silly reason to choose that as my army, but I looked into the lore and decided I really thought they had a cool backstory, then I picked up the Ravenwing Battleforce and Dark Vengeance and the rest is history!

Chaos Marines I started because I had them from the aforementioned Dark Vengeance set and decided that rather than selling them I'd keep them as a side project. Ended up using them mainly in my Khorne Daemonkin army in 7th edition; those specific models got very little use in 8th, and at the end of 8th I ended up selling all of my Chaos armies (no, "but DA are chaos!" jokes please, they're done to death ).

Basically all my other armies I started for the standard reasons; they looked cool and I decided, "I want to paint that!"

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 7 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

Got into an argument with my father. Went out with a friend and bought an entire Death Guard army.

My worst reason to start an army is probably agreeing to split a battlebox I had little to no interest for. Later I've come to appreciate sadistic little space elves so no regrets here.

Somehow I'm in the loop doing same thing repeatedly, splitting Shadow and Pain (for DoK), Piety and Pain (for aforementioned space elves) and Dominion (for lightning-clad tinmen). All which I had not planned to collect before.

When will I learn my lesson, I wonder?

I started a Vampire Counts and a Lizardmen armies 4 years ago as some players in my area toyed with the idea of revamping WHFB 6th edition, which I always wanted to play and never had the models, and everyone had to buy the models at that point.

The hype lasted a couple of months, then the project was abandoned. So I started buying models for those armies, mostly from ebay as lots of stuff was already OOP but I sold everything months later, at least with just a minor loss.

This year I finally got two entire WHFB 6th edition full armies though, Empire and Dark Elves.

Started Orks and Space marines because of Assault on Black Reach, two armies I didn't really care about but were good for playing small games with friends. I think I played with Orks three or four times and Space Marines saw some use, but never past 1000pts.

Currently considering Necrons because they're cheap, which is what I did with my Nighthaunt, rather than collect them because I like them. Probably the worst reason to pick an army as you'll end up not enjoying it.
