Looked around and couldn't find a White Scars tactics post so...starting to build a WS army and had some questions for those who do

1) I've seen several high end players running vets with SS\LC but no jump packs. Opinions? I thought 12"+advance would be bonkers but apparently it's not required?

2) Would love to hear combos, stratagems, strategies, etc that have worked well for WS

Bullet point 1 is interesting. Are you sure they aren't running them as company vets for access to the bodyguard rule? Company vets don't have access to jump packs outside of legends but otherwise have the same weapon options and stat line which is why I ask. +2 pts/model for the jump pack for 12" move combined with fly to move over screens/terrain plus the obvious synergy with the advance and charge seems too much value to ever be worth giving up on WS Van Vets in my opinion.

Jumping on this, how does everyone use troops in WS lists? the inability to gain Obsec bikers unlike prior editions is super frustrating

I do belive one of the warlord traits gives a bubble of objective secure. So that is one way to do it.

Walk up with regular troops.

You can use phobias armour to deploy out on the map with troops and close the gap with bikes.

Or just wipe out their troops. Then nobody have objective secure.

Units/Tactics that work well in White Scars:

Bladeguard and Reiver LT with Rites of War in an Impulsor. 4-5 BGV with this guy can shoot up the board Turn 1, with Windswift if necessary, then Turn 2 to be able to get out and just cancel an objective is very important for scoring Stranglehold by Turn 3, which could be all you need to tip the scales in a close game. Now your opponent has to go get that objective back. Some people will say forget the Impulsor, BGV are fast enough in White Scars on their own and that’s fine too. I like having it because in Hammer and Anvil deployments you really don’t want to be footslogging them. It’s also just an Ace up your sleeve your opponent has to worry about because there’s nothing they can do. 5 BGV hit hard and then you’re gaining Obsec and taking away theirs with Terror Troops. The usage can get wonky because you can’t use it while the LT is still embarked so often the threat of it is more so forcing your opponent to gun down all the BGV, knowing on Turn 3-4 you can pop it. Very tactical.

Vanguard Vets. Advance and Charge with a 12” move and D2 if they charge in assault doctrine is obviously amazing on Lightning claws. Don’t forget Adaptive Strategy to enter all doctrines at once and get that juicy D2 earlier if necessary.

Multimelta Devastators in a Rhino. I don’t use these but John Lennon, one of the best players in the country who plays a lot of White Scars uses these to great effect with Lightning Debarkation. Basically turns a Rhino into an Impulsor and let’s them get out after it moves. It’s not as good as it used to be, because you used to be able to burn 2CP on Windswift and move it wherever you wanted first but they changed Windswift to an Advance move so now you can’t get out. But you’re still getting 14” move and a 3” disembark which should be enough to get you within 12” of whatever you’re trying to slag.

Outriders. I don’t use them either but they auto advance 6”, have 16A on the charge for 3 and can help score you Engage on All Fronts on Turn 1.

Other things I like that aren’t unique to White Scars but synergize with them: I like a Phobos Librarian with a Ghostweave cloak for doing Warp Ritual. I like pushing 3 Redemptors into the middle with him hugging them and getting to do his thing unmolested. That’s usually 12VP. I like playing to assume Primary is basically a push and Secondaries are my route to a win. I like taking Retrieve Octarius Data with 4-5 Phobos units (usually Incursors and Eliminators) and making use of Guerilla Tactics to max it. You really put pressure on your opponent to try to zone you out and it dove tails nicely into Engage on All Fronts. Oaths of Moment and Strangehold are good options too depending on the mission and opponent. Guarantee yourself at least 36 points on Seocndaries and White Scars are good at objective holding and you’re on your way to a 76 (86 with paint) point scoring floor. (Assuming you can score 10 Primary points a turn, and limit your opponent to 10, that’s usually a win and you’ll be in every game).

Hello WS players, if you could please give me some clarity on this: yesterday I played a WS dude who advanced his relic volkite contemptor and shot his volkites without penalties. No strat nothing, he said it was white scar bonuses. Thing is I can’t find the rule… I see the fallback and do what you want rule, the advance and charge, the advance and fire assault weapons with no penalty, but nothing saying they transform any weapon type into assault weapons (perhaps it was 8th Ed marines). Was he playing the rules right ? Thanks a million guys !
And sorry for the necro, but I really need to know as I might play him again soon and we are in the process of preparing for national league tournaments

Next time remind him it's a 1 CP strat called Hunters Fusillade if he wants to do that. Turns any units heavy or rapid fire weapons to assault if they advanced.
