HI all, so as some will know, i've recently come back to gaming.

I played 40k back in 2nd edition, then moved to WHFB, then quit, then came back to fantasy in 7th and 8th. Then quit again..Now i'm back and it seems WHFB doesn't exist so here I am, meandering my way through the new 40k world.

I've always wanted a cadian army so that's where i'm going at the moment. Hopefully they bring the real fantasy back as this sigmar stuff isn't my thing at all.

One of the things that attracted me to gaming in my youth was white dwaft during fat blokes reign and the tail of four gamers was about my biggest inspiration. So i'm intending to do a similar thing...except there's only one of me... and I don't have anything at all so my initial spend is more than £50! So perhaps more of a blog than anything.

I've made enquiries with a local gaming club and will be swinging by there to hopefully get some demo games and see what people are playing these days (apparently necromunda is really popular - might have to get a gang on the side)

So.... here we are.... week 1 of a gaming journey.

Citadel Base: Castellan Green £2.34
Citadel Base: Zandri Dust £2.34
Citadel Base: Dryad Bark £2.34
Citadel Base: Abaddon Black £2.34
Citadel Base: Celestra Grey £2.34
Citadel Base: Leadbelcher £2.34
Citadel Layer: Cadian Fleshtone £2.34
Citadel Dry: Tyrant Skull £2.34
Agrax Earthshade (24ml) £4.04
Citadel Medium Shade Brush £4.55
Citadel Small Drybrush £3.28
Citadel Medium Drybrush £3.49
Citadel Large Drybrush £4.90
Citadel Small Layer Brush £3.92
Citadel Medium Layer Brush £4.17
Zandri Dust Spray £11.26
Citadel Plastic Glue £3.82
Basing Glue £3.59
Start Collecting! Astra Militarum £46.75
Army Painter Wet Pallette £19.99
Fold up TV tray £19.95
A3 Modelling Workstation £25.00
19pc Gundam modelling set £8.99
Army Painter Brown battleground £6.59

Total Spend £193.01 (sorry fat bloke - no bacon butties this time)

So a hefty first month!!! but hopefully sets me up for a while. I'd watched a youtube video of a guy painting cadians and liked the look so copied his paint list. I think the "start collecting" box will give me plenty to work on for the time being, so future purchases should really be limited to the rule book, then i'll probably wait for the new codex unless I get the painting done and i'll get something else to paint. I'd really like a fully painted army when I start playing....be the first time ever!!

So. That's September... stay tuned

To be fair, I don’t they counted durable hobby supplies like brushes or general things like glue in the old tale of 4 gamers.

Good luck and looking forward to progress.

Well a start has been made.

I decided to start with the 10 man squad, get them assembled. Painted. Based. Then I’ll treat myself with a character or tank or something a bit more fun.

I’m glad I started here as they’re a bit of a pain. Mild lines to a while and arm positioning is a bit hit or miss but hey. This is a new start so clearly I’ve forgotten how to do this stuff

I got 2 guys done. I’m happy enough with them. I need a detail brush certainly. Bit of a challenge doing this with a layer brush!

Whilst the tutorial I used was ok, I think I need to use the second stage, which really brings out the skin - I assumed this would be a step too far but now I’m keen to give it a try. So need some more paint!! Will leave that till next month though I think. I’m keen to get all ten to this level before making changes to the process.

Great start, looking forward to seeing the army as it develops.

Interesting to see all your costs laid out, especially with all the paints, etc... included in the cost. Not something I've ever done, I shudder to think how much the hobby has cost me over the years.

I swear by the new contrast paints for faces. (And a lot of other things, but mostly for my Nids). Magic in little bottles. You can get better results if you do the multi layer/highlight, blend and shade thing. Or just bang on a coat of contrast, and call it a day.

I know if I was painting a zillion guardsmen, I know what I would choose.

and then there were 4.

so, found an hour to do a couple more of the first squad. Felt alot nicer doing a couple as I could change colours and feel like i'm making progress. Doing 1 colour over 10 minis was pretty dull, 2 seems ok, might go for 3 next time though and see what feels best.

Really need a detail brush, and think a different skin wash. In fact I want to relook at washes on the next model, it's making things pretty muddy so I need to learn some new techniques there I think. I'll stick with it for now, I want a consistent looking squad so I don't want to change process hald way through, and don't want to spend more money on paints without needing it.

one model is pretty grainy from the rattle can - probably due to me mixing it badly. I'd forgotten how much I HATE rattle cans. I used to have an airbrush setup purely for basecoating - I'll have to see if I can find the compressor and get a new brush for this job (works out ALOT cheaper too!)

Spent another £11.98 (taking running total to £204.99) for a clip on lamp. I paint whilst the wife is watching TV, so i've got my fold out table (which collapses and lives under the sofa) but lighting is pretty poor as we've just got the lamps on in the evening. So I got a clip on light thing - battery operated so no wires to trip over.

I'm hoping to finish this squad this week, which ties in nicely for the end of the month, which means I can stick to my agreement that I'll only spend once a month (yeah I know the light is an out of budget spend really) and will prepare for either a commissar or the tank....maybe the heavy weapons team. Again, glad I started with the squad. Means that each next model will feel a bit like a treat.

Also aiming to explore magnetising the bases, and sorting some storage out. We're moving soon (hopefully soon....) so I can't just stick some extra storage space together (which is a pain as I also brew beer, and built a pub in the garden which would be a great gaming space!!....more on that later though!)

Morth out.

How many models you paint in one go is a science in itself. The more models in a batch the less time you’ll spend per model as you get a production line going. 2 at a time seems low to me, though it comes down to how many you’re comfortable with. I always do 5 models at a time. I know people who do 20, or more!

I agree that when you have a lot of models in one batch it feels daunting and it feels like you’re spending a lot of time not getting far.

I try to paint a variety of models in one batch, ie not 5 lasgun guardsmen in one go. I try to throw in a special weapon, or a platoon commander, or even a Crusader or Abhuman. With Imperial Guard that’s not always easy as there are so many guardsmen with lasguns in one army.

Good to see your army double in size. You’ll need to buy more models soon

i'm sure when I speed up I'd get to 5 or so, 2 is comfortable for now. doing 20 seems mad!! and I'm too OCD to do a different model in there lol, I'm not even doing the radio guy or the flamer, they'll be a paint session on their own, as will the sergeant.
I think tonight I'll get another 2 squaddies done.
Tomorrow will be flamer
Wednesday Radio
Thursday Sergeant.

Friday is gaming club night, so will swing by and see what people are playing.

Saturday I'll decide what's next: Tank, Commissar or heavy weapons team - probably be the heavy weapons team as I have all the colours ready. And I'll work out what I need for the other two and get an order in (along with a detail brush!)

So i've probably 3 weeks left on this box at my timescales. Then I'll look to expand a bit

I'm really tempted by the Cadian Defence Force, which seems to be decent value for what you get and would give me hopefully all the basic troops i'll need for a while. And can then just add more tanks (and hopefully if they bring out kasrkins again I can add them in)

Really nice work, it's great fun having a little project on the go, nice to have time free to do it as well. I agree with you, I think the heavy weapons team is the way to go. A little different but still nice and easy.

I have to paint upstairs because my wife also refuses to have the top light on at any time!!

Fold out table is a great idea though, where did you get it?

and just bought this to clip on the table or whatever I can grab. Can't comment on it's efficacy at the mo, But i'm hoping it gives a more direct light to where I'm working.

but the table fits under our sofa which is quite low so you can't see it. And wife is the same, she wouldn't want the top light on in the evening, she likes it to feel cozy, but i'm hoping the direct lamp will keep us both happy.

I don’t think many Guard players would agree that 3 infantry squads is enough, though for small games you should be fine.

Just out of interest, did you buy the Start Collecting box directly from GW? Did it come with the upgrade sprue? By that I mean the extra weapons and heads. So a meltagun, a plasma gun, a bolter, etc... If not you are limited with how you can equip your dudes. If you are happy with grenade launchers and flamers in your squads then fine, though those weapons aren’t great. You can also buy the bits you need on EBay as people are selling them.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t buy the Cadian Defence Force, it is about a £40 saving after all. The upgrade sprue is just something to bear in mind.

I got the starter box from element games.

I'd be getting the defence force direct as it's not widely available elsewhere and doesn't seem to give discounts where you do find it so may as well buy direct.

I'm sure it's not enough troops in total but it's a big jump with a decent discount.

Looks like a nice and quick painting scheme. It's easy to overextend when restarting and never finishing the project.

Concerning rattlecans getting grainy, I've found that often the problem is spraying too much or too close to the model. Or in a too cold area. A good rule of thumb is to always move across the model when spraying, never starting of stopping the spraying while pointing at the model.

I've also found putting the cans in some hot water for a few minutes is worth it (and of course you can never shake it too much). Since I've gotten into the habit of warming the cans first, I've not had a single mishap.

Doing it with airbrush is probably the best, (though I have never had the required space for it). Although a small plus with rattlecans is that there's no cleaning required afterwards unlike the airbrush.

A good start, I would recommend maybe doing some different methods (or even different tones) for painting skin to break up the monotony of doing the same thing over and over...
I think I have like seven methods of painting skin at the moment which can help break up the everyone is a clone that infantry can sometimes get

exactly the idea, quick, simple and gets me practicing.

I think room temperature was the issue based on your thoughts, as I did it in the garage - been a while since i've used a rattle can and clearly i'm a bit rubbish. But I'll go back to the airbrush, I just find it easier to get a good coverage and cleaning isn't soo bad.

got three off the painting table last night, so all that's left in this squad is the flamer, the sergeant and the radio guy. So i'm going to aim to get those done tonight, then I can crack on with the heavy weapons team tomorrow.

I'm putting together a bit of a shopping list for the end of the week and aiming to stick to my one purchase per month. This month will likely be paints for the commissar, and any extras needed for the tank. I think i'm likely to be spending more on the hobby aspects than the models themselves!

I'd like to get a couple of plastic boxes, get the bases magnetised and painted models can then be stored safely. I know when I had a LARGE WHFB empire army, storage was an issue so i'm keen to start well here.

Hopefully GW release the new IG book at some point. Don't think i'll get the codex till the new one comes out, will just stick to painting in the meantime.

Ok so I think I need to split this into "hobby" and "Models" otherwise the totals are going to look a bit crazy!!

Vallejo Matt Varnish £2.30
Model Air 006 - Camouflage Light Green £2.30
Model Air 019 - Camouflage Dark Green £2.30
Model Air 023 - Hemp £2.30
Model Air 057 - Black £2.30
Airbrush Cleaning Pot £15.75
Medea Airbrush Cleaner 8oz £9.09
Neo For Iwata CN Gravity Feed Airbrush (0.35mm Nozzle) £76.51
3 Metre Iwata Braided Hose 1/8 To 1/4 BSP £16.19
Subtotal: £129.04

3 x 9 ltr Really usefull boxes
3 x 4 ltr Really usefull boxes
Subtotal: £30

Total £159.04
Grand Total £364.03
Hobby Spend: £317.28
Model Spend: £46.75

As you can see, at the moment my spending is based around hobby supplies. Once I've got a decent paint stock in hand spending should simmer down. It's just a case of me getting the right paints to do the paint job I want to do.

I was intending to get the required paints for the tank but it's another £30 and I don't want to go too crazy. What i've bought will allow me to paint the heavy weapons team and give the tank and commissar a good airbrushed base coat, then I'll wait till next month to get some more paint.

Main goals for this month are finish the squad assemble and paint the heavy team, assemble and base the commissar and tank. Once that's done I'm aiming to move onto magnetizing I think. It's not an expensive job either and I need to work on storage as I go really.

and we have a squad!!!!! wooo.

Well, learned alot doing this squad, certainly things to take through to the next task. I'm hoping for a better base coat from the airbrush (always used to give better results) which should then carry through to the rest of the paint job.

I need to clean the models more. There were alot of flash lines left which i'd missed. So next time - more thorough!

Heavy Weapons Team is next up I think.

I've got the paints on their way for the tank which will be after that. Then my commissar... but need more paint for him so he might wait as i've spent a small fortune already!

whoa whoa whoa it's magnets...

so, not much progress this week - had my first taste of club life in YEARS! and it was great, seems there's alot of people coming out of hibernation to play games which is awesome.

I spent a bit of time with the airbrush base coating my heavy weapons team. And then magnestised everything so I can start to tidy things away a bit better. Really happy with the result

Hi all,

not made a huge amount of progress lately, just plodding along. We're moving so things have stalled somewhat.

But been making headway on the ol' Leman russ and the HW team, they however need some matt varnish and I need to touch up some areas I'm not key on

Commissar has been primed (yeah only had green primer sadly!) And he'll get some love in the coming weeks.

I'm pretty happy with the tank, little patchy hear and there but i'm please with the texture created, just need to sort the turret and side guns and do some magnetising.

So, spending....

Citadel Base: Rakarth Flesh £2.34
Citadel Layer: Fire Dragon Bright £2.34
Citadel Layer: Screaming Skull £2.34
Citadel Layer: Kislev Flesh £2.34
Citadel Dry: Necron Compound £2.34
Wargamer Brush - Insane Detail £2.92
Wargamer Brush - Detail £4.05
200ml Airbrush Thinner £8.99
Tamiya Liquid Cement 40ml x 2 £5.38
60ml Acrylic Polyurethane Primer 607 - UK Bronze Green £5.39
0.35mm Nozzle for Neo CN (including o-ring) £15.43
Dry: Wrack White £2.34
Dry: Nurgling Green £2.34
Nuln Oil (24ml) £4.04
Wargamer Masterclass Brush £7.19
Base: Corax White (12ml) £2.34

So that's another £72.11 into the hobby pot = > £389.39

Bringing the grand total to £436.14

But i'm getting ready for more models!!!! yay the fun bit!

Wifey asked to put some options on a list for crimbo, so think that'll be paints mostly and a sentinel because I love the model. Got Bullgrins on there too for the same reason.

Next model purchase for me will be the cadian defence force boxed set. It offers a decent discount and bulks me out quite nicely.

I'll be buying the rules soon too, but have signed up for Warhammer+ so I can have a read but I do prefer a book. Holding back on the codex till the new one comes out though.

In the meantime I'm quite happy plodding along, building the army as I can.....Forgeworld have some nice tanks though..................... one day lol

Models Models Everywhere.....

So, I didn't stick to my plan.... it's started.... painting backlog has been beaten by impatience and eagerness to play

Warhammer 40,000: Core Book (English) (9th Edition) £34.00
Imperial Guard Leman Russ Demolisher £29.76
Cadian Command Squad £19.11
Imperial Guard Sentinel £19.11

The sentinel is already assembled and painted... I've always wanted a sentinel, just reminiscent of childhood watching star wars.

I'm aiming for 1500 pts, which is what people play at the club, so I'll be spending some time making lists I think, make sure I'm going in the right direction - but let's face it it's guard..... lots of troops....lots of tanks.... can't go far wrong

I'm in for an operation in a couple of weeks and the lovely wife suggested a trip to a model store to choose early xmas gifties to keep me occupied whilst recovering yeah she's a keeper

I'm thinking bullgryns will appear next, maybe scions, maybe more demolishers..... maybe... maybe....

So where's the spending gone...

I'll call the rule book "hobby"

Hobby Spend: £423.39
Model Spend: £114.73

Grand Total: £538.12

It's great watching this grow

I reckon bullgyns are a good choice - people don't expect a AM army to get up close and personal!
Could always get an excuse for a demolisher as fire support to go with them - who doesn't need and excuse for more tanks!?

so this is the force as it stands.

I've got more to do on the tank, i.e. the weapons but other than that i'm pretty pleased with it. It's good for table top and that's about the limit of my ability.

I've got a demolisher to build and a command squad. Need some more paints before I can do much on the commissar.

Think next will be another squad, some Bullgryns, heavy weapons platforms..... more tanks.....more....more MOREEEEEEE!!!!

It's interesting that your model spend is so much less than your hobby spend. I guess as your army grows this will swing the other way. Either way there's no denying that this is an expensive hobby.

Good to see the progress of your army. Looks like you're choosing some of the more competitive units to expand with, including Bullgryns and Demolishers. It remains to be seen if they will still be competitive when the next codex drops though.

Am I right in thinking you've only painted one Infantry Squad so far? It's tempting to paint other things but remember you'll probably want at least 6 units of Infantry Squads in a 2,000 point army so you'll need to go back to the lowly Guardsmen at some point.

Yes I’ve tried to control the spending to “needs” and going from scratch means the modelling spend needed to be fixed a lot quicker - I had nothing. No primers no brushes nothing, it’s amazing how it has added up so quickly and I’m still not where I want to be, still want MANY more colours lol.

Yup only one squad at the mo. That’s purely because it’s all I have though.

I agree, need more troops. Just I’m kinda ticking off the “ooooohh pretty” stuff first and than will certainly double back for more “oh god not more guardsman”

I think I need about 4 more tanks at least, 2 more sentinels and then some other must haves, so I’ll most likely add a box of troops with each - paint a squad; reward myself with painting a tank.

I wish I had a firm idea of when the book comes out. It’s a hard time to be new to guard, I don’t want to waste money on stuff I won’t end up using but that being said I’m a hoarder, and I want a play what you see army i.e if it has a bolter and chain sword on the list then the model won’t have a bolter and powersword. For other armies that’s fine, guard less so as I really don’t want to have to magnetise “EVERYTHING” some options sure but I’d rather just have more tanks to cover the main options.

So yeah it appears I’m adding competitive options but it’s more a case of building an initial army list and adding the models from that in some form of an order….which as you’ve said - is fine for now, but a new book could change things DRAMATICALLY

Nice progress Morthraen. The sentinel looks really cool, the dry brushing has given it a nice battle worn look. It’s interesting watching your costs add up. You seem to be scoring decent prices on the minis, but the hobby supplies is surprising! Still I’d hate to sum up what I’ve spent, it’d be scary I reckon
