Hey folks. I'm searching for a term like Oldhammer or Middlehammer to loosely describe discontinued GW games or editions after the Middlehammer era. (I suppose Kill Team 2018 could fall in that category, but that's an extreme example.)

I'm sure someone brilliant has already coined the term or terms, but I'm drawing a blank. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly.

Late-hammer?
Recent-hammer?

I think it'd help if you provided definitions for Oldhammrr & Middlehammer.

I’m not sure if there’s any consensus regarding the Oldhammer/Middlehammer timeframes. I guess I think of Oldhammer as (very roughly) pre-1995 and Middlehammer as pre-2005. I’m trying to think of a term that describes the decade or so after that.

Hrm. I use "oldhammer" interchangeably to refer to any non-current GW games, generally.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

As do I.

Although I do feel that using it to describe something like 8th edition is wrong. Too recent to be proper Oldhammer, but not the current rules.

Where you draw the line is going to be very subjective. There are things I still think of as “new” which date back to 5th or 6th edition, so am probably not the best person to make the call here.

Also on the distinction;

1) You need to indicate what actual game you're referring to. "Oldhammer" doesn't tell me much. Are you talking about 40k? WHFB? AoS v.1 or 2? Are games like BFG, Mordhiem, etc included/excluded?
The only reason I suspect you're talking about 40k is because you posted on a 40k forum.

2) Just making groupings based on arbitrary blocks of years applied blanketly isn't very helpful either.
40k for example has 4 distinct eras. RT, 2e, 3rd-7th edition, & 8th/9th edition. They each play differently. and in the case of 3rd-7th & 8th/9th? If you draw some year based line through them you cut off parts of an edition as you'll have some codex that spans editions. Where does Codex: Orks fall in your "Middlehammer"?

There’s a running joke in oldhammer circles that oldhammer is never anything more involved than debating what is actually oldhammer.

There are people who argue that only pre slotta minis are properly oldhammer, while others tend to use the term for anything out of print.

The introduction of middlehammer usually makes things murkier instead of smoothing things out, but I think you can safely call anything Rogue Trader or 3rd edition WFB oldhammer, and 6-8 WFB and 3-5 edition 40k middle. That leaves what’s to many the first golden age of 94-2000 or so, 2nd edition 40k and 4th/5th WFB, aka herohammer aka the bright era. It’s a profound shift from true oldhammer, but also a profound shift before true middlehammer. It’s also when most armies were still mostly metal, so it’s a much more accessible area to collect.

your mind

True and righteous hammer
Hammer the way that God intended, so Godhammer
Besthammer

Polonius nailed it. But typically I use oldhammer for anything oop in everyday discourse.

In my mind, oldhammer is anything up to 3rd 40k and anything wfb really, as gw killed it so long ago now. But sure, to be precise, midhammer might come up with fourth 40k and sixth wfb per Polonius above.

Oh, and "newhammer" for 8th 40k and forward, surely.

Heh, the weird sniffyness about what "counts" as old is the main thing that prevents me from participating more fully in those communities. To me if it's more than an edition out of date it's old enough to be oldhammer.

Never even heard the term 'middlehammer' before.

Most useful thing is just refer to the edition (or range of editions, ie 4th-6th), that way people actually know what you're talking about.

'coining terms' just means creating useless jargon that other people aren't going to know.
