How do!

Been playing a bit of Deathloop this evening, and it’s a rather fun game.

Like many Bethesda stuff, this is a fairly open world sneaky shooter, but with a Puzzler element. You play Colt, and your mission is to end an ongoing time loop on an island, by assassinating Visionaries. Trouble is, you need to first find them, and at the right time,

So far it’s pretty impressive. The weapons are fun, and my favourite kill method is to spring, slide, then set about them with my machete. Though you don’t need to go down the rampage route, as you’re free to approach it as you will.

The plot is starting to emerge, as you kick off in a fairly amnesiac state. And each time you die, your start the same day again. You lose your progress of course, but each time is a learning curve, especially as it doesn’t take much to kill you. I was worried it might feel frustrating, but it’s quite enjoyable once you get going.

Still lots more to discover, including messing around with the time periods.

I almost bought this, as the trailer looked alot like Dishonored(shocker), and that reminded me that I never finished Dishonored 2 and the Outsider expac.

Will definitely pick this up next paycheck.

Honestly I'm waiting to hear more about how long it is and how much content it has. It looks short (and is intrinsically set up to reuse a limited amount of content).

Also, I thought there were two playable characters? The guy and the woman, who were sort of in competition. Or I misunderstood a preview trailer or two?

Far too early to say how long the game is, but it is a lot of fun. Up to you how you approach stuff, though as you discover clues you need to change your approach.

There is another game mode, but it wasn’t open to be picked when I started.

I haven't played it myself, but based on comments I've seen on Steam, apparently the female assassin can be played by another player, who basically jumps into your game, takes over the character, and tries to kill you. If no player is doing that (or you've turned the option off), the character is run as an AI controlled NPC.

Oh. Thats... weird. Not that the multiplayer exists, but that means that the playable assets for the female character are all in game and functional, and they could have let people choose between the two for single player (as they did for dishonored 2) and just... didn't.
That's an odd decision for 2021.

In game I got up to Juliana’s first invasion, and it explains she can only do it three times per area.

OK doke. A few more hours in, and getting into the swing of it.

Death is kind of a necessity as you explore. Every Loop, you learn a little more, find another secret, and get closer to an overall solution. You might find a sneakier way into a stronghold, and use that to make your life massively easier the next time around.

It’s a very unusual mechanism (though possibly similar to Returnal?). I went through a brief period of “oh god I’m just getting my arse kicked” where I felt a bit disgruntled. But now I understand that’s just part of the game? I’m considerably more gruntled.

It's not THAT unusual. Dying and trying again is pretty classic gaming and this style is pretty close to the roguelike formula without the procedurally generated level variety which is... basically just how old lives/continue systems worked.

Well, it’s unusual to me

Definitely finding it an enjoyable experience, and I can only hope completion brings a decent sense of achievement.

Another upside for me? Because of how the game is structured, it’s quite well suited to short sessions. A quick excursion to see if you can find something specific you just learned about, for instance, might be 15 minutes of gameplay. So for someone who doesn’t have hours to dedicate regularly this is a decent feature.

You can of course do much longer sessions if you so choose!
