My friend used to run dakkajets in his 8th edition codex Ork list. (In 9th edition.) They where really good IMHO. Beeing a nuisance, denying deep strike, gunning down objective holders etc. The best thing they do is threaten characters. Popping down behind them and unleash a volley of shots. This often leads to awkward positioning of characters.

They where also reasonable cheap enough that it is not so terrible if they get killed. Mind you it performed a bit bad if they do not stay well away from multi melta attack bikes.

Do other armies have good flyers like that? I have not seen the 9th edition Ork Dakkajet. I am very interested in trying one of the stormtallon gunship or stormhawk intersceptor for SM. It has good guns. Enough to threaten characters or infantry on objectives.

Stormtallon is 165 but only T6. Stormhawk is 185, T7, an ekstra gun and has some good rules VS flyers. (Witch I think will rarely come up.) Storm raven, Storm Fang and Storm wolf (I play SW) all seem to expensive for what you get.

I like the T7 Storm hawk. Feedback is preferred. Thank you.

The Dark Angels flyers are decent, if a bit expensive for what you get. The Dark Talon does have a nice gun that deals 3 mortal wounds on a successful wound roll, which is pretty spicy. But it costs 210 points so not cheap enough to spam.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I quite like the Stormhawk, mostly because it has more guns than the Stormtalon. The Stormtalon's best rule is being able to hover, but that's not always relevant. It does make it better a pulling off precision assassination runs, though, if the enemy gets sloppy and leaves you with a landing spot near his characters.

I think my favorite weapon for both flyers is the standard missile launcher, as it can engage a wide range of targets. It's about as good as the lascannon at killing tanks, and if you ever encounter light infantry then the combination of the assault cannon and frag missiles will absolutely shred them.

The las talon is probably the best nose weapon for the Stormhawk, but the autocannon is fine, too.

I generally start with my flyer in reserve, unless my opponent has anemic long-range firepower. I also try to practice the buddy system with my flyers, either by taking two or them or teaming one of them up with another fast unit or deep strikers.

Madness is however an affliction which in war carries with it the advantage of surprise - Winston Churchill
